What is /g/'s opinion on FreeDOS?
I game on it
>>
>>57007076
It works when I need to use it on old hardware. It has tcpip and modern hardware fixes so 8/10.

pros: DOS
cons: DOS

I been playing around with FreeDOS lately, gonna use it to play some games natively. Read the interview of the guy who made it and keeps the code he was going to move on to do a 2.0 type new version by moving the OS forward and expanding it but he figured he was wasting his time. I don't understand why can't he remove the 640k problem and simply have access to higher memoery without a load in?
>>
>>57007202
This.
>>
>>57007942
isnt 640k memory thing a hardware limit
>>
>>57008037
n-no....?

if it is it is news to me, i thought it was a limit of dos kernel from the time that it was first developed.

i wonder if it has been kept for compatibility reasons
>>
>>57008107
640KB is the limit from 8086 times. It's called real mode and every x86-compatible CPU starts from it.

>>57007942
>gonna use it to play some games natively
Except light-speed lose.
Many games are literally tied to the hardware.

By the way, can I have the interview?
>>
>>57007076
It has lots of incompatibilities with actual MS-DOS, so it's not really good for a whole lot (see: running Windows 3.1 on freedos)
>>
>>57010613
1. are you sure that's not just because of some bullshit ms added? i know they went out of their way to stop windows from working right on non-MS-DOS
2. why would you even want to run windows 3.1

>>
>>57007076
I got a CD with FreeDOS with my new PC, but I don't have a CD-ROM so I didn't even think about installing it desu
>>
>>57011180
>why would you even want to run windows 3.1

Why would you want to run DOS? Same reason you'd run Windows 3.1, to run aplications in their natve environemnt.
>>
> not using true IBM compatible PC-DOS 5
>>
>>57007076
GNU/Freedos.
>>
>>57007076
Maybe if you really need to use an old computer I guess?

>>57007942
There is DOSBox for exactly the purpose of using old software and retro gaming. You can slow down the speed of the games too as to not having the issues >>57008680 mention

>>57012947
Also this.
>>
>>57012879
Thanks.
>>
Can FreeDOS connect to the modern Internet?
>>
>>57013980
You'll be surprised, but literally every system can connect to the modern Internet provided with modern software and modern drivers, if there's modern hardware.
>>
>>57014054
Well I have Win 98 in a Virtual Machine to dick around with and there's a lot of sites that are broken because web browsers stopped support after a certain point, so you are using depecrated versions

I guess my question really were there any modern web browsers available on DOS
>>
>>57014190
just abandon javascript websites and you are set
>>
>>57014190
>can operate on the Link Layer?
>it is broken on the Application Layer

As expected of a retarded tripfag

I use DosBox.......it's good enough.......
>>
>>57013848
>There is DOSBox for exactly the purpose of using old software and retro gaming

Yeah... But I want to run natively, and sometimes Dosbox shits itself because reasons.

Rude
>>
>>57012920
What were the differences between PC-DOS and MS-DOS?
>>
>>57014607
What programs do you have problems with?
>>
>>57016328
Just a few games, it shat itself trying to load Carmageddon, but then again it won't load under freedos either, I may have a bad copy of it.
