Post your retro tech, wish list, holy grail, eBay finds.

Like this anon?

i got it a few months ago... for free. The left channel is a bit broken but i process some of my music in mono through it.

Will swap for a Prophet5 ha ha ha
>>
>>57005562
this is my baby though. It's no 808/909/303 but it's got character.

Got it for $100 AU near by. The fools thought it was broken but just needed a few electrical contacts cleaned.

I miss my cassette recording days.
>>
I own a similar cassette player with VU meters but the door doesn't open correctly. I need to take pictures...

It was bought along side my Amp and Tuner.
Here's the Amp. Fixed the poping when turning it up by cleaning the pots with contact cleaner. Granted it's a bit old.

>tfw extremely jealous of those CRTs
>>
>>57005737
1792x1344 @ 85Hz
Will happily do 1920x1440
Have a 22" Diamondtron that'll do 2560x2048
Also a Sony W900 that'll do 1600p
>>
>>57005698
>>57005806
I, too hang on to my higher end CRTs. Why get rid of great monitors?
>>
>>57005806
I have poor vision so my ideal would be to have something like that 22" Diamondtron running at 1600x1200 or an FW900 at 1920x1200.

>tfw have literally been looking upwards of 8 years for a decent CRT locally with no luck
>>
>>57005877
If they break I repair them.
More or less all people who buy CRT's ATM do do because they are gaymurs and want the refresh rates.

If they experience any problems they'll get a new screen of overclockers or newegg and throw away the CRT.
Most problems are either blown caps or a blown flyback.
>>
>>57005891
The W900 I got was complete accident.
I was going to get a lacie 22" when a W900 popped up on ebay out of nowhere.
Haven't seen one since.

I also have 2 more 19" Mitsu's, all 5 mitsu's cost a fiver.
Bloke turned up at my house naked with them 0_o
>>
>>57005922
Why was he naked?

Also what's the highest res the W900 can handle at 85Hz refresh? I've never minded the horizontal curvature of older Trinitrons and the W900's is very minimal anyway.

>>57005958
Dunno.
He was putting undies on as he got out.
I dunno about 85 on the Sony.
It's never handled high refresh rates well.
Firmware cuts them off!
I'd imagine 2048x1260'd run quite well at a high refresh rate

>>
>>57005998
Nice meters.

>>57006016
Found a manual for the W900 and it seems like it was only specced for a max of 96KHz horizontal scan which is quite a bit lower than the final generation high end CRTs could handle. It recommends 76Hz refresh at 1920x1200 which is about all it could handle with 96KHz horizontal scan. 1680x1050 would probably work nicely at 85 or 90 Hz though.

Take the cover off and blast any and all pots and switches with contact cleaner and work them about 50 times lock to lock and repeat 2-4 times. Youll be surprised how many issues can stem from minute amounts of currosion on those things. Also try cleaning the tape head(s) as a small amount of currosion could also prevent it from getting a good read on a stereo tape.
Pic related. Although it's not a picture of mine, i found one of these jvc ja s31 amps for $30 because it was barely putting out any noise and it sounded like distorted garbage.
All i did was clean the pots and switches as above and bam, good as new. It's literally perfect. No scratches or dents, everything works great. People are just too scared to try fixing stuff themselves

>>57006391
dude, thanks! I had no idea it _could_ be as trivial as that. I was going to write it off as a future expense as a repair job. Will definitely be trying this!!

I might as well post my collection since i like old stereo stuff.
This is a kenwood ka3500 i paid $30 for because it has some scratches, was missing a cap for one of the pushbottons, and the right channel was cutting in and out. I did the contact cleaner routine and functionally it's perfect. I found a replacement button cap on ebay for $5 shipped.
Both amps are rated at 40wpc, 0.2% thd, and ~85+db separation on line in. Both have dented/stepped potentiometers, but the kenwood has 1/4 stops while the jvc only has 1/2 stops. They came out within 2-3 years of eachother and would have been very close competitors.
They sound more or less the same to me, in fact all of my amps sound pretty much the same. I think the fuss about them is really overstated.
If youre curious the little guy on top is a headphone amp i bought for my brother. I tooke the picture to compare his headphone amp to mine.

You can also find really nice vintage speakers for cheap if youre willing to refoam them. In the picture is an infinity sm 85 i got at a swap meet for 25 bucks for the pair plus a full sized center channel. The foam on the 85's was rotted so i got a replacement kit from ebay for 15 bucks and they work great. I think they sound really good but audio pukes disagree with this series.
The bigger ones are basically their big brothers, the sm 152's. Got them for 40 bucks and 30 bucks for a refoam kit and they work great. Those bastards weigh over 60lbs a speaker! The ones on the right are just cheapo pioneer speakers i found at a thrift shop for $15. Theyre ok but dont compare to the infinity's.

Ive got some others including a pioneer tx1000w with the walnut case in immaculate condition and a bsr 3000eq but no pictures. All stuff i found for cheap and decided to pick up to see if it was any good/fun to tinker with. Unfortunately i dont have any pictures.
The prized possession of all my junk though is by far a kenwood kc 6060a. I dont have a picture, but its every bit as nice as the one i've included and has the somewhat less common wooden sides. I paid a lot for it, but its so amazing to watch i think it was well worth it.

If you want to pic up this kind of stuff, just keep an eye on your local classifieds. I see great deals all the time on the classifieds my local news station runs. Its where i got the vast majority of my stuff, and youll often find people just cleaning out their parents old stuff they forgot they even had. Dont be afraid to try and perform some basic repairs either. These things were built to be serviced and a lot of their parts have modern equivalents.

You could do all sorts of shit with VCRs back then and you still can now. Not even trying are you boyo?
>>
>>57007794
Hey I remember fondly of VCRs but I am blind in my remembrance and definitly not romantic about it because I also remember all the bullshit that came with VCRs.

I used to use VCR a lot to rip audio stream from TV along with a analog sattelite receiver.

As for VHS tapes, they're cool until you have problems.

I just followed this one. Its actually really easy once you've done it once. For the 8" drivers on the sm 85's i didnt bother shimming the voice coils, but on the 15's theres no way i couldve done it without shimming. Luckily they came with accurate dust cap replacements with the logo so they look exactly as they would have originally.
You dont have to get the specific ones for your drivers, by the way. I only bothered because i wanted them to look correct.
I also accidentally made a small puncture in the cone of one of the midrange driver. With your ear next to it you could hear the difference from one driver to the next. I followed this video
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6Tbu22Qh8QY
And i would say it sounds every bit as good as the other 3.

And just think, the few places out there that do this kind of stuff usually charge over $100 per driver!

Have you tried just cleaning the pots and switches?
The only realy in that thing should be a protection relay. If thats clicking over youre pretty much golden.
>>
>>57010213

I cleaned the pots and switches, yes, aswell as the relay itself (cut some paper, sprayed it with contact spray and slipped it between the contacts of the relay). Didn't do the trick.

It clicks tho... hmm
>>
>>57010296
My next best guess would be a cold/broken solder joint. If the channels are cutting in and out its likely somethig with a sketchy connection. Typically if a semiconductor goes itll just kill the channel completely, throw off the q-current reading, and flip the protection relay off. Also a very small possibility is a switch or pot might be worn down enough that the copper pad isnt conducting properly.
You could take some readings with a multimeter to test that.
If you can hear the relay flipping on and off each time the channel(s) cut out, something in the biasing circuit is going screwy. A common thing in these old pieces are the integrated double or tripple diodes that were garbage from day one, resistors that have begun to drift and are most apparent once the amp starts getting warm, and thermisters that no longer do their job.
Give me some more info and ill see if i can reason anything out of it.

These Guize win the tread...No doubt
>>
>>57010362

thank you for your input! Thing is, I am already at the end of my knowledge concerning electronics...

The amp doesn't click when channels are lost. I'm not sure if the signal is lost completely or if there's still a faint/distorted signal coming in. It's mostly the same channel that's lost, but it is the amp not the cables or speakers. Trying different combinations of using Rear/Front-channels (the receiver has 2 front and 2 rear-stereo-channels) doesn't help either.

Can't test it right now, because i'm not at home. I
