the problem with turning the computer on for a stock photo is that autistic people have been shown to take an obsessive interest in the minutiae of what's on the screen, and that distracts from the point, which is getting across that someone's typing something up on the computer.

working without at least a couple monitors is unbearable
>>
>>57006395
i have a couple of monitors for my desktop and i agree that it's nice to have a few, but calling it unbearable makes you sound like one of those special needs kids who throws a tantrum if his chair's ass marks don't have exactly the right impression.
>>
>>57006382
Sure, I understand that, so just open notepad and throw a massive wall of text in there that has a small enough font to be unreadable.

As you can see, the computer being off is making my autism flare up and detracting from the point.
>>
>>57006395

>>
>>57006463
Oh, you have autism. My mistake. Yeah, a desktop is probably better for you.
>>
>>57006409
1) it would be too visually busy.
2) then you would complain that it doesn't look realistic (who has just a straight up wall of text on their screen? even when i'm focusing it's a few columns or a column and a PDF (outputting latex))
3) a wall of text is a stance on what you should imagine on the screen. normal people will view a blank screen and they can imagine youtube or facebook or some text or whatever they normally do on a computer. by taking no stance, you can mentally project whatever you want into the scene.

it's honestly kind of incredible that i have to point these things out. did you spend time thinking about this or am i doing all the thinking for you?

not him, and i don't want to help him because he sounds autistic, but i absolutely love having multiple monitors so i can have a full page of documentation or something similar on one monitor, a full screen of code on another, etc...

having multiple monitors also really opens the door to portrait orientation. you could have your monitor in portrait orientation at the outset, but so much content is sort of designed for landscape that things would break, so you want at least one monitor in landscape orientation.

give it a shot sometime. even reading 4chan and other web pages is a totally new thing, but writing code becomes much more pleasant than it already is when you go portrait mode.
>>
>>57006332
Why would coding require a desktop? Unless you're compiling the kernel or something, you really don't need high performance. And if you're lifestyle requires you to have a laptop, it's silly to buy a separate desktop - not only will it cost you money, you'll need to find a way to synchronize your data between them.

the laptop and monitors are technically two computers, but i was shitposting at the time so i wasn't really focusing on work.

this is what it generally looks like when i'm working (sublime text for LaTeX on one screen, the PDF output on the other, some chat/spotify/other junk on the laptop).

so you want stock photos to be relevant to you, but not relevant to everyone else.

this is precisely the antithesis of the purpose of stock photography.

i want you to know that the market would rather alienated you than cater to you. you're irrelevant.
>>
>>57006615
I assume you get a discount for purchasing in a larger quantity.
>>
>>57006618
true, but a lot of monitors these days are IPS, which should be sufficient.

if you have IPS monitors, try it out. if not, look for IPS or better yet high density displays when you go on the market again. high pixel densities make the text look absolutely gorgeous (again, mostly a benefit for viewing text, but if that's 90% of what you do, like it is for me, then it'll really please you).
>>
>>57006647

would love to, but I can't afford replacing at the moment.
>>
>>57006682
fair enough. you might be lucky, actually. a year or two ago when i was buying 4k monitors the cutting edge at the time was multi-stream transport, which i can assure you is an absolute garbage workaround for a simple problem. in the years since they've finally hammered out standards to support 4k @ 60Hz (maybe even 120Hz now), so in a year or two more it'll be trivial to support higher resolution displays without a lot of crazy hacks, and at a reasonable price.

if i didn't mind holding off for a year or two, i figure i could've saved myself $200-600 dollars just on the monitors and video card.

i'm not regretful, per se, but you'll probably enjoy exactly what i have for $600-800 less than i paid for it, when you eventually do upgrade.

>>
>>57006458
At that angle, if you have a privacy screen you absolutely would not be able to see anything. It would look black.

However, it would probably not look as shiny and flat, so it probably *is* off.

t. someone who has seen a real life privacy screen
>>
>>57006458
>>57006925

That said, at that shallow of an angle in broad daylight, it's more likely that the reflection is just overpowering the light of the screen itself.

Then again its a meme stock photo picture, so yeah it's probably off, seeing as computers that are on are bad for the environment, man.

Fucking hipsters, man.

>>
>>57006623
What do you do that you work with latex?
>>
>>57006970
it is genuinely really comfy. doing the overview image where i basically drew a straight line from each monitor also forced me to check and see if i could make the monitors direct lines intersect closer to where my head is (it's close in the image, but not perfect).
>>
>>57006983

the one on the left is a P2415Q and the one on the right is an UP2414Q. they're both 4k monitors

my laptop *might* be able to drive them, but it would be a bit painful with the laptop fan going full throttle all the time, so i built a hackintosh, got a GTX 970 (since that was one of the first video cards with several DP 1.2 ports, which supports 4k at 60Hz), and threw all my hard drives in there.

the monitors still act as extended desktops thanks to teleport, which lets me use either computer's mouse/keyboard on the other computer (i can also share my clipboard and do some other stuff).
>>
>>57007156
also, that's why the laptop only has a USB-Ethernet port and no mini-DP or HDMI ports occupied; i could use teleport over wifi but i occasionally get what feels like latency, so i just turn off the wifi when i'm plugged in and use the ethernet (which is faster anyway, so it's actually beneficial for more than just latency reasons)
>>
>>57007156
thats a fucking nice setup I gotta admit.

126KB, 1514x1156px
>>57007184
yeah, i'm really happy with it. i thought about turning the hackintosh into a proper linux server, but i haven't seen high pixel density support in linux catch up with OS X yet, so that's not going to happen (but sharing displays would totally work with Synergy, which only has a few shortcomings against teleport).

i've also heard that apple might update their thunderbolt display (or whatever) lineup to include graphics cards in the monitors themselves, which makes me glad i went with this approach now rather than wait for that possible future. that solution (integrated graphics in each monitor) seems like it would have a lot of drawbacks.

if i could go back and do everything all over again, my advice:
- get P2415Q units instead of the UP2414Q (or wait for cheaper versions). the UP2414Q runs hotter, costs more, takes more energy, etc... (this is to be expected as it came out like a full year earlier, but still).
- you could get by with a 950 or even lower end if you see video cards that support DP 1.2 or better. i just wanted a video card with multiple DP 1.2 ports and i wasn't willing to wait.
- motherboards are a little more gnarly. i would just look for the motherboards that seem to have the most support on that tonymacx86 site (or whatever it's called). you'll want to make sure USB support comes without a lot of shitty troubleshooting.

anyway, this isn't a hackintosh general thread, so i'll digress

Gigabyte GA-H87-D3H, but this was back in February 2014. A *very* quick glance at the hackintosh buying guide and i think i would get the GA-Z170X-UD5 now (e.g. if the motherboard dies for some unforeseeable reason). that would suck though, since i'd need to get a new CPU as well.
