because GNOME classic still uses GNOME 3 applications. Just because the desktop looks like GNOME 2 doesn't mean it has the same underlying technologies such as GTK+ 2.0

MATE is porting to GTK 3.

I'm kindof conflicted on this. I prefer gnome 2's desktop layout, but the theming engine improvements in GTK+ 3 do seem a legitimate improvement.

The issue is hardware, not looks.

I hate to break it to you but most people don't have 32gb of RAM and 2 4xCore processors.
