Tencent also runs League of Legends in china it's a investment group that invested a lot in gaming it's not really odd they buy stuff like discord. Discord will become an ad supported program with micro transaction at some point and make money. Like just about every service on the internet anybody who thinks it's free cause the devs are cool is dumb. But that don't mean it's necesseraly bad.
