Why don't you have a chromebook yet?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

I'm on chromeos dev channel and I can get apps from the appstore now.
There are a few bugs, but I'm satisfied that I now have an Android laptop.

you may like it because of surfing the web and lightwork but im more of data saved hard drive than on cloud and i need more better perfomance.

If your work is being a social media expert, by all means buy a Chromebook.

For anything that's actually considered work, get something decent instead.

The main reason I like my Chromebook is because it's cheap (mines was $150), it has really long battery life, and it's really lightweight. Also when you install Linux on it with crouton, it doesn't decrease the battery life unlike when you install Linux on a regular windows laptop. A lot of people who have a Chromebook also have a regular windows desktop but the Chromebook is a nice complement to it.

Also you won't have as good battery life running chrome on windows compared to running chrome OS on a Chromebook. And I find the trackpads on Chromebooks to work a lot nicer compared to more expensive windows laptops.

>>56996996
>Can't even save shit to the harddrive.
Yes you can.
>Right-click is replaced with middle-of-the-track-cunt click.
You mean two fingers to right click?

>You cannot even unzip zip files out of the box.

You can but the way to do it is a little annoying.
>>
Thinking about purchasing:

>ACER Chromebook 14 CB3-431-C5K7
>Screen: 1920x1080 IPS, 14"
>Intel Celeron N3160 (4 cores)
>4GB RAM
>32 GB SSD

Is this any good in terms of specs? Seems to be the upper mid-range in terms of Chromebooks, especially in terms of screen quality. And is it easy to install random Linux distributions on these systems?
>>
>>56995994
Because it's linked to Google, because it's a shitty distribution of a shitty kernel that's packed with bugs. Everyone here is better off with an actual UNIX.
>>
>>56999543
Yeah go for it. Just make sure when you're getting a chromebook it has an intel processor in it if you're planning on installing linux.

You should also look at this chromebook if you want a intel processsor more powerful than the atom in the acer chromebook 14 and USB-C

You can use services like CodeAnywhere to just program in a webbased IDE, then deploy to a remote VM. For a growing amount of software and/or services you don't need jack shit locally anymore.

I know SaaS triggers Stallman, but other than him being a retard in general who hasn't achieved anything notably in the last two decades, it actually works great. Cheap local devices such as Chromebooks can be used to access remote services.

If this is the future, I don't actually mind where we're going with this.

Can and should are not the same thing. Moreover, this is less of a valid option for developing applications that aren't web based.

>>
>>57003267
Unless you're developing desktop applications with a graphical user interface (which are deprecated by the way), you can do anything on the remote VM. You can deploy Java/C# garbage all you want.

The crazy thing is, 10 years ago i'd have thought the google ecosystem is perfect. A real realisation of the future... yet with control being wrenched away from users, its becoming the problem.

I guess ideally it'd be something with the elegance of google & its apps, except installed on your own personal server, with your own controls and security. i suppose "personal clouds" are already a thing, but i've not really heard much about them, so i assume they have null market impact.
>>
People really missed out on the older models that used real storage. My C710 came with a 320GB HDD for $200, but that sunuvabitch was so noisy I tossed in a cheapo SSD and now it's fantastic. I can still toss in more RAM, but it does all that it needs to just fine on the stock 2GB.

When Microsoft introduced the Office Online apps, it felt like ChromeOS had been reborn. Pixlr is still my go-to simple photo-editor, and there are a handful of SSH and Windows file explorer tools out there for when you need to move stuff around and work on the more simple things.

Unfortunately, many older models are not going to ever get support for Android apps, so there's the trade-off. As others have said, Chromebooks make great compliments to those that already have desktops or just want seamless shitposting machines. I love mine, but I have many alternatives for it, and I know it's not right for everyone. They're definitely worth the couple bucks if you just need to browse, write, and watch stuff.

Fuck vidya. That belongs on desktops.
