I like fluxbox. It is blindingly simple and easy to modify, and if you take just a little bit of time to play around with the preset themes and read a bit of wiki/docs you can get a very functional and lightweight X setup.

I use DE's for the Networkmanager applets or whatever they are called to quickly change AP SSID's. What's a good cli version of this? wicd is a tui and sucks and wpa_supplicant commands are too confusing. It takes 7 steps to add a SSID in wpa_supplicant.
