So, here i am, wondering if two 3.0 usb flash drives in raid 0 with installed OS would:
1. work
2. be faster than regular hdd
3. be faster than one flash drive
4. be worth it

Thanks!
>>
>>56978058
yes
very likely
yes
no
>>
>>56978058
USB 3.0 flash drives don't mean they necessarily fully use the USB 3.0 theoretical bandwith, they most likely only use a fraction.
>>
Honestly, i dont care about data loss in drive would break.
SSDs are still pricey in my country
how much slower would it be than normal sata3 ssd?
>>
>>56978098
>>56978072
ok, thanks!

Really fast and good flash drives are expensive and at that point you're better off buying an SSD.
>>
>>56978112
Will do, thanks for the help guys
>>
>>56978100
Order the meme Kingdian S280 in 120GB or more. Ive been using it for 2 months, csg for much longer. Works great.

Yes

SSDs are a marketing meme. Open one up some time and see it's nothing more than a bunch of flash drives connected together and sold for 200% mark-up.
>>
Stick on your screenshot is slow AF
Find some with constantly fast speeds. That shit chokes when writing 1GiB

USB3 flash drives will wear out faster than SSDs.

>256GB usb stick for under 20 bucks.

>Enjoy your fake stick.
>>
>>56978058
most usb flash drives use the cheapest of the cheapest chips
making them die far faster than ssds
they also are reliant on usb 3.0 unlike ssds which you can pack up to sata or any of the other internal connectors for even higher transfer rates

and as anyone who is not retarded will tell you
raid is unreliable at best
>>
>>56978668
>raid is unreliable at best
yeah one time a HDD in my raid array died and my data didn't disappear, fucking black magic I probably sold my soul to the devil because I didn't read the fine print. That's not a very reliable lifestyle.

When my HDDs without raid died I lost all my data like GOD intended.
>>
>>56978947
i´m sorry i expected people to know that raid 0 is implied after all op totally didn´t talk about raid 0 with 2 3.0 drives
>>
>>56978947
>tfw using GMO-free HDD
Feels good man
>>
>>56978058
You should invest in a SSD OP.
Flash drives as OS drive are only good for NAS
>>
>>56978986
Are they free-range though? Gluten-free?
As a GOD-fearing moral Christian American I wouldn't buy a HDD if it they weren't.
>>
>>56978058
No. Look at the read write of flash drives. They are usually worse than mechanical drives. Some of them are just as fast as mechanical drives.
>>
>>56978172
You really need to stop posting misinformation.
The read write speed of any normal reasonably priced usb flash drive is not going to be faster then the "average" ssd. The average ssd is going to read/write atleast 5 times faster than a good usb3 drive. That chinkshit drive in that pic probably has a shit teir speed.
>>
>>56979045
But then how will I feel better about being too poor to afford an SSD, asshole.
>>
>>56979117
how does blatantly lying to people make you feel better? Youre the asshole.
In the amount of time you spend shitposting and spreading misinformation, you could have gotten a job and had the money to have an ssd by now.
>>
>>56979142
But that takes effort. And it makes me feel better because I can almost convince myself that what I'm doing is the better option. Asshole.
>>
Im not poor, i just havent paid single dollar for this pc, and id like to keep it that way.
System only, no data
Computer is being constantly upgraded/rebuilded/reinstalled
If one of usb sticks would die, i would replace em both
I just didnt realise that flash discs are based on slow chips, not even utilising 3.0 potential in read speeds, but...
This is most budget pc you ever seen, all parts were scavenged/found.
What i thought of is saving os on raid 0 flash sticks, cause i got just slow wd green for just OS, (rest hdds for data)
>>
Man, there are even usb ssd now. That shit is amazing for tails of any other portable OS.
>>
>>56979161
Youre a delusional peice of shit.
Flash drives suck ass you only a roach faggot would try to tell others to do the same thing just so you dont feel like such a looser.

If you want to lie to yourself thats fine, but stop trying to rick other people. Also if youre buying chink shit, you should have just bought a chink shit ssd, and dont come crying to us when your chink drive fails and you lost all of your data.
>>
>>56978058
99% of USB flash drives have really dumb controllers without cache, so they have absolutely abysmal random access speeds, worse than a laptop HDD. RAIDing several of them does nothing to improve this.
>>
t. poorfag
>>
>>56979217
I'm just fucking with you, I'm not >>56978172
So don't get your panties in a bunch
>>
>>56979326
I really dont care if youre etiher. Im just waiting till Im tired enough to fall asleep
>>
>>56979266
Using multiple flash drives as a RAID will absolutely improve read and write speeds.

If you have 2 free USB ports there's absolutely no reason not to use 2 flash drives with RAID 0.
>>
>>56979365
Do you even read
>random access speeds

RAIDing two drives with 0.2 MB/s 4K performance won't make them passably fast for system use. And for backup use, RAID 0 is dumb.
>>
>>56978058
Many USB 3.0 flash drives does not saturate USB 2.0 speeds. They are painful to load Windows with the bootable USB stack, even as compared to a regular installation with 5400RPM HDDs.
>>
>>56979365
Yes, read and write maybe.
But it will do nothing for access speed and other things that matter more.
>>
>>56978058
How would you go about RAIDing USB drives anyway ? Don't you need fixed disks for that ? ive seen it done before but only on some magical linux system that has almost no purpose
>>
>>56979387
have you ever run a windows to go installation ? i used my copy of enterprise to make a win2go drive on a kingston v300 SSD and a startech SATA to USB3 adapter. Honestly dude the difference between that SSD being in a sata port and going through the USB3 adapter is almost negligible. once all the drivers and stuff are installed i can cold boot my portable windows 10 enterprise usb disk in like 10-15 seconds, it's awesome
>>
>>56979610
>SSD going through SATA -> USB3
No shit, of course that's as fast as an SSD.
Doesn't make actual USB flash drives not use shit NAND.
>>
>>56979656
yeah thats my point, the definition of a usb flash drive is kinda subjective. as far as im concerned, a sata ssd attached to a usb adapter is by it's very nature, a "portable usb drive" I didnt think anyone was actually entertaining the idea of installing windows on RAIDed flashsticks. That is silly
>>
Pcie card with 4 usb 3.0 ports, i would constantly populate 2 of those ports with 2 flash drives (2x32GB probably)
Reliability seriously isnt an issue here.
>>
>>56979746
did you have them raided ?
>>
>>56978058
They make flash drives with SSD controllers in them now but you can get actual SSDs of the same storage capacity for cheaper. I bought one, it's pretty nice and it's exciting when you see the transfer speed on your USB drive hit over 300MB/s
>>
>>56979767
u talkin about these ?
http://uk.pcmag.com/visiontek-usb-pocket-ssd-512gb/76718/review/visiontek-usb-pocket-ssd-512gb
>>
>>56979764
I have raided flas drives in past, but i never tried installing an OS on them.
I was curious if anybody has done this in a past, if is it viable (at least in os speed)
I was planning on buying new ones.
>>
>>56979783
I have one made by corsair. It's their GTX flash drive, I don't know if the other GT lines have the SSD controller. I'm pretty happy with it. I was sick of having USB Drives with write speeds slowing that my internet. This thing is crazy fast I love it even if it was a bit over priced.
>>
>>56979799
how do you raid flash drives ? ive tried before but always hit the "fixed disks" problem

noiiiice
>>
>>56978058
1. it would work
2. it would be faster than a regular hdd in most operations
3. it would be faster than one flash drive
4. it might be worth it, depending how much the drives cost

But I wouldn't OS onto them, honestly.
>>
>>56980052
I actually would still have hdd with secondary os, in case of flash raid break, which i would use untill raid replacement.
>>
you can get a pretty cheap SSD these days dude, just go for it. it's worth it. There are plenty of options in the 128gb range on Amazon for $40.
>>
>>56980528
Tripple that price in my country.
But usb flashes are pretty cheap here, 2x32 gb for approx 20$, however, ssds are still overpriced af here. And you dont need much more than 64GB for OS and few essential programs
>>
>>56980569
Then get 4x32 for $40 and make a RAID 1+0 or 0+1
>>
>>56981202
I dont actually need redundancy, if it breaks, it breaks.
But i could do 4x32 raid 0, it might be as fast as ssd then? Its still a card in pcie, so bandwidth shouldnt be an issue....
>>
>>56981563
It would be faster for sustained reads and writes, random access would be as slow as a single flash drive. With faster I mean faster than a single flash drive, not faster than SSDs. That'd depend on the specs of the particular flash drives you use.
>>
>>56981626
OK, thanks, ib better find dead notebook and pray that its ssd is alive xD
>>
what manufacturer makes the best ssd for around 64 gb?
I'm looking to put my windows 7 install on it (I'm guessing that's more than enough space lol)
