I was, I had a 3570K. The Z77 board it was on took a shit, and finding a decent new-in-box replacement was going to run me almost as much money as upgrading. I spent the extra $50 to get a Z97 board and a 4790K.

Why bother? By the time the board becomes difficult to replace, there's going to be significant upgrades anyways. Compared to the old 3570K, my 4790K has IPC improvements, runs a 300 MHz higher overclock, and stays cooler at the same time.

mobos are so cheap i would never notice the cost over the expected 5 year lifespan of my builds. i like my towers plugged in and bootable whenever i need them. it's pretty amazing what files you find on your old computers.

also some boards are DOA. you plug everything in, no boot, take all of it off, send it back and you're waiting for however long. never happened to me personally but would rather not deal with the hassles.
