Sup g
Taking a course in numerical modelling in Fortran, and i have no programming experience at all, expect for some shit tier python scripts
How fucked am I?

Well, Fortran is the language perfectly suited for your tasks.

>How fucked am I?
Pretty fucked. If you're lucky you're at least getting to use Fortran 90 or later though.

Fortran is a highly specialized tool compared to most modern programming languages. It's not all that difficult to pick up. I had a course that used it ten years ago with nothing under my belt but a bit of modeling software and BASIC at the time and I made it through just fine.
There is only one good book on learning Fortran for general purpose programming if you have no previous experience in general purpose programming, that is "Modern Fortran in Practice" by Arjen Markus

The only thing that made me nigger are formats.
>>56969325
You'll be fine OP
>>56969616
Can second, good book
>>56969325
Must people that learned Fortran didn't program before. That's why the "best first language" is a meme.
>>56969668
Is this actually true? I find it hard to find tutorials that assume I know jack shit
>>56969616
Thanks, I'll take it out of the library
>>56969590
Yeah but I'm also a retard so there's that
>>56969556
I'm using F90, half of the point of the course is for people inheriting old f77 programs

>Is this actually true? I find it hard to find tutorials that assume I know jack shit
dont feed the "XXX is a meme language" trolls, theyre in every programming thread.
Fortran is one of the most optimizable programming languages, there is no "undefined behavior" lurking in every corner like other compiled languages, its used for scientific programming because its the best tool for the job

>Yeah but I'm also a retard so there's that
Fortran isn't hard. It's just old and doesn't have a ten million pajeet following on stack. You'll pick it up without issue and if you don't then you should go find a job doing manual labor.

Of course it's true. 40-30 years ago you had college students learning how to program computers with punch cards for COBOL and Fortran, and 10 year olds were learning BASIC on their Amigas.
