What's the point of buying a VPN, /g/? Isn't a VPS more convenient? You can run a SOCKS proxy on it via SSH and use it for anonymization (same as a VPN), but you also have a 24h server at your disposal.
Am I missing something?
I'd assume a vpn is cheaper
Recently bought PIA for 1 year. I'm happy with it.

>Am I missing something?
you don't
ssh is superior due to it can use 25519 curve kex with chacha20-salsa cipher, it is also fucking effective and secure, openssh came from based Theo, that guy is awesome, you can trust him.
many vpn's rely on tls cert authorities, which means C U C K E D, you can't trust over 20+ authorities around the globe and feel secure.
Can you get a VPS with unlimited traffic and high bandwidth for 40$ a year?

ovh.ie
go to vps ssd section
then you can see 3,49$ option with unlimited data
socks is tcp
vpn can be udp
might be a difference in latency. otherwise no, it doesn't matter.
vpn lets you connect more than just two devices, though

i get ~3 ms overhead using my ssh tunnel
i use my ssh tunnel from work since the computers are on lockdown but putty can be run in userland and socks through ssh
i use openvpn from my mobile device because it takes care of all traffic on open networks, can be TCP with long keepalive (which means phone doesn't have to keep responding to keepalives and draining battery)

Shit son, I gotta try that shit out.
The only advantage I see is that VPN providers let you pick the endpoint, so you can pretend to be from Japan or some shit for exclusive content.
with VPN you have many IPs from different contries.
Where can you purchase a vps? Can you torrent through em??
