im comfortable with both, but some people at my university use xubuntu, kubuntu, other use mint, other debian, really dont know, or dont see, any difference.

Also will run in my laptop, a macbook, should i guess any compatibility concern?

Compatibility will probably be the same between all those distros. Mint cinnamon is the most comfy one, and debian will be the most minimal. You can pick whatever you value more.

Ubuntu is based on debian, and everything ending in "buntu" is pretty much identical to Ubuntu under the hood, the only difference is UI and default software in some cases.
Then again, mint is based on Ubuntu. It probably has better compatibility because it uses non-free (as in free to redistribute and open source) drivers and codecs. But their site was hacked a while ago and download files were infected with malware, so if you want to use it better download it through torrent.
It won't really matter what you choose.
