I don't see the problem here. This has been a known Windows work around for years - this little key just automates the process instead of having to do it all yourself.

Are you a newfag by any chance, OP?

why would you encrypt a whole disk then?

GO BACK YOUR BOARD /v/!
>>
>>56954690
To protect your OS and prevent someone from even being able to boot into your OS, much less manipulate it.

You're a fucking retard if you think FDE is a dumb idea. Also, nothing stops you from using FDE and then separately using file level encryption on your files in case you want to back them up anywhere - they'll remain encrypted.
>>
>>56954690
For mummy don't find your mlp folder, faggot.
>>
>>56954602
Pretty sure this was fixed like 6 years ago, so it probably only works on Debian now.
>>
>>56954701
then why does windows have passwords and access control if security is unimportant?
>>
Rule 1 of computer security:
If someone has physical access to your machine then it is not your machine anymore
>>
>>56954710
The rest of my disk doesn't interest anyone and the performance and time waste of having FDE is not worth it for an average user like me.

If anything goes wrong, I lose all my files. Instead, I have a small volume where I keep all the important stuff and I can even upload it online if need be.
>>
>>56954751
Fix your X frist, arch user.

>>56954769
Most domestic user don't care about security, but business users care a little.
No you can back to your board /v/?

There is a very good argument for wanting FDE.

Take for example a small encrypted file, once you unecrypt that it may be cached, copied, etc. Your original copy can of course be encrypted back to conceal it, but these cached copies, data stuck in paging, etc can not and it leads to side channel attacks.

The whole point of FDE is to help prevent side channel attacks and lingering evidence of and leaked data from encrypted files.

Lots and lots of work go into making stuff liek Typecrypt, etc try to prevent this stuff because it's a real issue, even in RAM. This is why crypto software should be audited for quality, because there are lots of ways to leak encrypted data if you're not careful and cleanup.

It's better than Gentoo?
>>

>Most domestic user don't care about security
Sure, that's why all normies install antiviruses and /g/ is arguing about encryption and privacy all the time.

Everybody cares about security. Tell anyone that you want to plug into their computer a usb stick that will steal their personal data. How many will tell you to gtfo and how many will tell you "go ahead, I don't care"?

What most users lack is understanding of security risks and how to secure their systems and reasons to do so (until someone steals their credit card data and empties their account).

It's even easier in Linux, all you need is download a live CD, boot it, mount the FS, run chroot, run passwd and than you have full root access.

Arguably a lot quicker over all since you don't have to wait for delivery.

Fine. I'll bite. Why, O' wise one, do you think FDE is retarded?
>>
>>56954873
Take a laptop through international airport security. You won't have a choice.

My work requires FDE on all devices that access work servers, files, or email. Even then, we aren't allowed to take such devices internationally.
>>
Is OPAL 2.0 safe?

I assume it has shitloads of backdoors for NSA, M9, KGB, etc?
>>
>>56956206
If the content isn't encrypted anyone can get to that anyways.
Just boot from a live CD for example.

But he did get to the content as well.

Windows accounts are to prevent your grandmother/little sister from fucking something up accidentally.
They are never a security measure.

So... basically this

Thank GNU a BIOS password can't easily be bypassed by removing a component of the computer and then putting it back.
>>
>>56956567
Just encrypt your shit if you're worried about someone being around your computer for that long.
>>
>>56954469
This is retarded, if you already have physical and BIOS access the computer is already "hacked", you don't have to do anything.

How would they boot into your OS without physical access to your computer? And if they had physical access then you have to throw away your whole computer anyway because you have bigger things to worry about. Also with full disk encryption you only need one bad bit to lose everything. You're a retard if you don't think that FDE is the stupidest meme ever and don't use an encrypted VM where you emulate a hardware environment with a Commodore 64 to manage your sensible files.

obviously anyone who truly gives a shit is going to be secure but most people don't and they are vulnerable.

This is true. Windows logs a fuck load of information in various ways; cached thumbnails, prefetch/recently used, shellbags, user assist and tons of other shit that gets preserved in the registry
