my first taste of linux was an ubuntu vm. it started fucking up randomly, turns out my 10 gig candydoll torrent filled up the virtual disk. installed to physical disk soon after, never looked back.

Yes, you can.
Firefox 10.0.12 ESR works on it, and that supports webm and HTML5 well. You can even watch fucking youtube. getting mpv could be harder, you might have to backport ffmpeg and other shit to it.

For technologies exited back in 2008, you could always use the good ol' mplayer.
