This attitude always makes me laugh because I was the same way my first couple of years in undergrad. Yeah, we get it, there are a lot of dumb latte sipping sorority girls that use macbooks in your general education classes.

OSX actually isn't a "horrible" system though. It's not perfect (HFS+ being a good example) but overall it's pretty damn good and as someone working with biologists and data scientists with yuge data sets the fact that you can use a lot of unix tools natively in such a polished environment is really nice. I know a lot of computer scientists that use OSX.

macOS Sierra if you need productivity, applications, and stability.

macOS Sierra on a non-Apple computer if you need to develop applications for it or need the best value for your money. However, it's not all that it's cracked up to be. You're better off buying the real deal from Apple down the line.

Windows 10 Professional Anniversary Update Edition (Yes, it matters. It's akin to Windows 8 versus Windows 8.1) for video games (disgusting) and the best Windows operating system if you don't mind the applications and redesign because it wants to become macOS so badly. Sorry, but it's true. We all know it.

Windows 7 Ultimate Service Pack 1 Edition if you want the last true Windows operating system. Before the Windows Store and two different Skype applications took over. The last true Windows design. It's also consistent, for the most part, in design. Probably more stable too and works with older software, but keep in mind that Microsoft is seriously trying to destroy Windows 7. Lots of developers moved on to 10 and in the future you might have severe issues with 7. Be prepared to upgrade in the future.

Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS for a distribution that is akin to macOS with the benefit of Linux and works for beginners, but allows tinkering. However, if you want tinkering and a more serious distribution go with Debian. Ubuntu is a restricted Debian anyways.

Arch Linux if you're experienced and want a serious Linux distribution or if you're extremely insecure and want to use it to tell other people how superior you are and feel special (you're not, you're just embarrassing yourself). It's fantastic for extremely old computers. Kind of pointless to use unless you want a close relationship with your computer and how it works, but you'd have to hate yourself to use it unless there's a valid reason. Which there isn't, it's probably just for fun. Gentoo if you want an even more hardcore experience, but you can't be saved at this point.
>>
>>56944129
What makes Ubuntu restricted relative to Debian?
>>
IPhones have never had a physical keyboard.

Inferior as fuck.
>>
>>56944129
I've used most of these.

Windows 95 to Windows 10.

OS X 10.10 Yosemite to macOS 10.12 Sierra.

Most "popular" Linux distributions. Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, Arch Linux, Gentoo, CentOS, Kali Linux (I know...), and elementary OS.

Google Chrome OS, too, but ehh.

For me personally I found macOS to be superior, by far, to everything else. It's night and day. It's such an amazing operating system that it's almost impossible to describe to someone who never used it. The design is perfect. Even the little things make you appreciate it. I'm the most productive here too. By far.

Windows 10 for video games as it's trying to be macOS anyways and you're better off going to the competition. Windows 7 for the last true experience of Windows.

Ubuntu for a macOS-like experience without the hassle of Windows and the benefit of Linux. Might as well use this if you can't get your hands on macOS because Windows is dead. You can play video games on here through Wine(?) or something like that, but you'll need to tinker a bit. Debian if you want more power and if you're running anything serious like a server.

Linux Mint and maybe openSUSE if you want a Windows experience or at least look. Elementary OS if you want macOS type look.

CentOS if you want Red Hat for free and are Jewish. Red Hat if you're not Jewish and wish to pay for Fedora. Fedora if you're not a dumbass. Just use Debian though, dumbass.

Kali Linux if you're a teenager and have an unhealthy BMI.

Arch Linux if you're serious about technology and computers and want a low-level experience. Gentoo if you're on the spectrum and want an even more serious experience.

Google Chrome OS if you have no discipline and need to be forced to be productive, but good luck getting your hands on it. Chromebooks are amazing though and a great value.

>>
>>56944355
Ubuntu is "restrictive" relative to Debian in the sense that it's more mainstream and friendly to extremely inexperienced people. It's probably the most friendly distribution for new Linux users. Maybe it was an inappropriate word to use. Ubuntu is Debian, but restricted in the sense that it's designed around ease of use. Debian is more intermediate. Ubuntu is a bicycle with the training wheels attached. It's Debian underneath, but restricted in that sense. You can take them off, but then just use Debian from the start.

Then again, it's all Linux regardless. Just catered to what you want to do.

There is nothing that you can say to save your fruitcake OS to be the universal fisher price OS. Saying that it's just fine to have that retarded merge is not helping your case either. So what that you can move files via command line, so can others too. They still cater to normies by not deleting their family photos on folder merge.

No dipshit, they cater to Normies by not having them fuck with the filesystem. Libraries are a thing. If you're smart enough to move around the file system you use the terminal/shell. Go back to your clicky clicky windows box that only works well as a glorified game console.

That's easy. HFS+.

I actually like Apple -- I'm dual-heading a Macbook Air and an iPad Pro as we speak -- but HFS+ is complete dogshit. APFS can't come fast enough.

You're all fucking retards, you just go into the folder you want to move and select and copy all the files into the other folder.
What idiot just drags folders onto other folders?

OSX is the superior OS. It's the HARDWARE that's inferior (for the price).

It just proves that you can never have everything in life. There's always a sacrifice.

Yes but nope
I started using Arch because Windows kills my 7 years old PC. Of course I like doing that stuff, but I also use it in the same way I use Windows without doing anything strange or unconventional. So what the pic says is true, but that's not the reason why people use Linux, at least that's true for me and almost all the people I know that use Linux as their main OS

No. It's trash.
