is this thing any good? all the hype about google's new assistant got me wondering if they're better than they look
It's botnet.
Make st. iGNUcius proud and look at FOSS alternatives

(also pls /g/ help me point out more FOSS projects of this kind)

i said in the other thread that mycroft needs developers more than it needs users. you don't seem to understand that frustrating users early on with a half-baked product ultimately burns the bridges you need to be able to cross later when your project is less shit.
Can someone explain what the fuck these thing are? Are these things basically just standalone voice command things which can be connected to a TV or whatever? What the fuck?

got this from searching google for "Amazon Echo".
what part of this result confused you?
>>56934495
actually, if you're honestly still confused, just read https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Echo

b-but /g/ is developers and FOSS enthousiasts, r-right?
>>56934647
/g/ is enthusiast amateurs, which is like going to /p/ and asking them how many of them with pro level DSLRs are actually professionals vs enthusiasts who've spent a lot of money on a hobby (there's nothing wrong with that, except pretending that it's not true).
the OP of this thread pretty clearly framed the question as a consumer, though. don't project on him some expectation that he'll be committing code to some open source project.

i read up on them and i was still a bit confused on exactly what it can be used for ie tv, games, etc. seems like a good normie station for 'tell me the weather'
>>56934678
valid point
I got one for xmas last year and I use it while cooking or when I go to bed. I use it for weather and music. I ask it to play a tune in radio station and ask it to stop playing in 20 minutes. It's unplugged when I don't use it.

but still, now that Google is pushing AI assistant even harder, will it be enough to convince normies to embrace this technology and forget about privacy concerns?
When will FOSS (or tech community in general) go from "enjoy your gimmick speaker, faggot" to "IT'S HABBENING, better integrate it into everything we can and extend it's functionality"?
I don't think i ever want to talk to technology
