Why do people say gigabytes when they mean gibibytes?
I don't how to interpret that word anymore.
I don't want to explain what the fuck a *bibyte is everytime i mention it
>>56932312
Still no cure to autism I see
>>56932370
>autism
gibibyte == 1024 mibibytes
gigabyte == 1000 megabytes
they're not the fucking same
Autism awareness
>>56932312
Because only a small percentage of autists know when to use each one.
>>56932312
These guys.
>>56932357
>>56932472
Saying out loud to anybody who isn't a turbo nerd any version of *bibyte is going make you sound so lame it's not even funny. Save yourself the embarrass and say the wrong shit. Its better that way. Maintain the cool factor.
>>56932312
Because GiBs aren't even used for anything anymore, the storage space is sold in GBs.
>>56932370
yeah, it even leads to complaining about autism on a tech board
>>56932312
>why
Let's see:
>Kilobyte meant 1024 bytes since the mid 50s
>The *bi prefixes were only introduced by the IEC in 1998
>JEDEC still uses kilobyte to mean 1024 bytes
>Bytes in binary multiples are still relevant today in all forms of memory and processing
>Windows still uses kilobyte to mean 1024 bytes
>Few people outside of technical circles even know what a *bibyte is
Bytes aren't an SI unit, and shouldn't need to adhere to SI rules when appropriating common and convenient prefixes (customary binary prefixes). The only reason this even exists is because magnetic storage manufacturers lobbied the IEC so hard for it so they could sell you a big number at less cost.
>>56932312
as far as I know both MacOS and Linux (at least Gnome*) use prefixes correctly**. Windows is the odd one out, using SI prefixes to denote non-SI values.
* it shows file sizes in MB and memory size in MiB.
** you can argue whether you should use MB or MiB for any particular case, but whichever they chose they adhere either to SI system (M = 10^3) or the IEC (Mi = 2^20).
>>56933097
bugger, M should be 10^6, my bad
>>56932312
Data sizes grow exponentially. Nobody cares about the neglectable difference between the two.
>>56932926
lol, most softwar uses GiB, often labeled as GB
>>56933097
customary binary prefixes
kilobyte = 2^10, not 10^3
megabyte = 2^20, not 10^6
gigabyte = 2^30, not 10^9, etc. etc.
the SI prefixes were borrowed as they were easily understandable, but bytes are not SI units
>>56932719
i write KiB whenever i can to ensure i mean 1024, but you're right, i can never say that shit out loud and just say "kilobyte" even when i mean KiB.
>>56932312
Because when speaking out loud, I round anyways, so the 6% difference doesn't matter.
"Hey, can I send you a file? It's 2.87 GB" is retarded, I just say three.
I write GiB though when I mean it.
