I'm going to be traveling soon, and I'm realizing that having a tablet would be useful. I've never owned one. I know jack shit about iPads and Android, I need your advice /g/.
Hardware criteria:
- I will have a wifi hotspot so I don't care about LTE.
- long battery life, not too thick/heavy.
- the size of a large notebook is ideal
- USB port (to connect keyboard), SD card port (to copy pictures from my camera).
- Screen with decent color reproduction to view my pictures
Now the important part: I want the option a minimalistic OS on it. Screenshots of Android and iOS all look bloated and unusable as shit. In daily life I use xmonad
I honestly just need a decent web browser for maps/email/basic wikipedia/etc., a PDF viewer, and VLC. Everything else is bloat. I'm a programmer and don't mind writing my own software to fill in the gaps.
Are there custom slimmed down Android ROMs that would do what I want? How easy would it be to remove the Android UI and have something super basic replace it?
thx

The Nexus tablets are still pretty good, and if you slim it down with Cyanogen mod it won't even have GAPPs
Ipad
I'd just reccomend an OTG usb cable to connect a keyboard and SD card reader if your card doesnt have it
No android tablets have full USB, and SD card support is harder to find than it should be
If you want to slim down i'd reccomend installing Cyanogenmod on your tablet, so check the site and see which ones can use it for ease of installation, and then installing the FOSS app store, F-Droid.
FOSS apps usually have jack shit for design and some of them even use the .xml parser of android for a simple UI like this

cool thanks.
Cyanogen looks good, although I see it still has the Google search bar on top and the ugly icon grid. Is it easy to get rid of?
iPad won't have SD port.
But I still would take iPad in your situation.
Nexus are pretty good choice too but they are getting quite slow today. So in long term iPad should be better.
Sony's tablets are pretty damn good and have AOSPA support if not CM.

Search bar is removable. Icon grid I'm not sure you'll get 'rid of', but you can remove all icons and pretend it's not there.
