OIS and the gyroscope are different things. You can't attach one to the other.

Pixlel uses some kind of software stabilization with gyroscope instead of OIS.

Wow. How enlightening.

That's why I asked what the difference is because the pixel is using the gyroscope to stabilize, not OSI.

Electronic image stabilization is a cludge. Crops the field of view to allow for the image to move around a bit in the frame and stabilize bazed on information from the gyros. Not as good as optical image stabilization

Hey guys, candafag here again.

Just to recap: I bought the 5x at about $450 but then decided to sell it for ~$300 because it was just too much phone for me. I wanted to buy something similar to the 5x with my remaining money and was thinking about the OP2 but there were some things the 5x offered that the OP2 did not. So I've been operating without a smartphone for the last 4 months trying to figure out what I should buy instead.

Needs:
Under 5.5"
Great camera
Good battery life
Under $300 (in Canada)

Performance doesn't really matter to me, which is why I sold the 5x and took the $150 loss instead of using a phone that had too much power.

I was thinking maybe buying the 5x again and just having extra power but it looks like prices have gone up today. So are there any other phones that are similar to the 5x but with less power for cheaper?
>>
>>56924208
that's true I guess. and it has capacitive buttons.

I hope for good rom support. Might get one if it gets cm or pa or rr.
>>
Is the RN3P still worth buying or are they releasing something new soon

>>56923655

>>56924048
Good suggestions. Just a bit mad Mi5s wants you to get 128gb storage to get 4gb RAM. I mean what the fuck?

>>56924048
>>56924150
I'm the one that asked. I loved the looks on the Honor 8 and it seems fast but the camera appears worse than on my Nexus 5x. I didn't use it much as I figured I wanted to sell it. First thing I did was putting a glass protector and transparent cover on it. It will most likely scratch like a motherfucker otherwise. My 5x I feel is a bit underpowered and likes to lag a bit when doing just a little more than one thing or switching between apps. Ram usage is 1.8gb or more pretty much always so I want something a bit more..powerful.

The pixel fits my needs nicely but I just don't like how it looks. Maybe I'll just have to get over it.
>>
>>56924295
what do you really need 4gb of ram for? 3 are enough imo (still using my smartphone with 2gb ram desu)
>>
>>56924334
games or media editing software in general will always be constrained by memory, so it's a safe bet
>>
I've been digging through reviews and comparisons of the 6P and OP3 all afternoon (for a while now really) and to me it seems like the OP3 is the way to go but yet all of them seem to indicate that the 6P is possibly equal to or slightly better than the OP3
I don't get it
the OP3 looks to have a better camera (judging by image comparisons) some reviews indicated that the OP3 battery is better and others the 6P, performance wise the OP3 seems better

at this point, the slightly modded Android on the OP3 and possible delay in updates doesn't bother me that much
I want a phone with:
>good battery life (coming from a N5)
>minimal / base Android UI
>good camera
>decent display
>good hardware / feel
>not a huge screen (though I'll deal with the 6P if it's truly the best thing to get)

I'm seeing a 6P "International Version w/ no warranty" on amazon for $399, not sure if I should get that over a "standard" one for $449
or just execute this order for a OP3

HELP

>>
>>56924334
3gb would suffice...right now. As I said, RAM usage is at 1.8gb or more on my 5x as we speak.

I can't say if that's intentional or not as I can imagine it using as much RAM as possible to keep loading things snappy and releasing it as demand increases. I just know demanding tasks like 4k video makes it crash, freeze and fuck up.
>>
>>56924367
okay, I don't game so that doesn't really concern me and I can live with 3gb. But if you do that kind of stuff on your phone wouldn't be 128gb be better anyway? It doesn't have a msd slot, keep that in mind.

Buying a chinkphone in Canada is ridiculous.
Could somebody help me out?

I keep looking at presales for the new budget phones like the Oukitel U15 Pro, or the Cubot MAX, and none of them support the canadian 3G bands i need.
>850MHz & 1900MHz band
At least they all have Quad Band GSM so i won't buy a lemon (Redmi 2 years back), but i need assistance in finding budget phones that work on 3G in Canada.

I'm just going to give up on finding one that supports 4G.
>(Band 12/17 (700Mhz), Band 13 (700Mhz), Band 4 (1700/2100Mhz) & Band 7 (2500/2600Mhz), for those interested)

Maybe i'll have to make a list of new and upcoming phones that work in Canada myself afterwards to help out canadian chinkphone fans.

I bought my 5x 16g in august for 200. I lovit except for the missing sd card slot. I take lots of video of my puppers (especially slo mo) and have to unload it all to my laptop about once a month. Wish I had seen the $250 32g deal. Otherwise it's a really great deal.

>you actually believed that google would actually put a microsd card slot since April
>you actually held off on buying a new phone just to see what Google has to offer
>price point starting $600+, XL @ $700+
>no MicroSD card slot

I mean there really isn't an excuse anymore, for their own damn company. If it's for security do they really not trust their OS that much?

HTC 10 has a MicroSD card slot, similarly priced
Galaxy S7 has MicroSD card slot, similarly priced
LG V20 has MicroSD card slot, similarly priced

Xperia, LG G5, OnePlus 3, etc all cheaper and have this fucking feature

They have zero excuse for this, and whoever here is saying "OH BUT IT DOES HAVE ONE!"
No it doesn't. Stop spreading rumors.

>>56926382
To me, it's all worth it. It hits every checkbox for me.

-Fast, consistent, reliable performance (why S7 wasn't considered
-Just werks (why I was considering a 6s and 6p, I don't like playing with custom ROMs)
-frequent security updates and OS updates straight from os developer, uninterrupted by the carrier
-AMOLED display
-at least 4.5 hours SOT with at least 18 hours standby (say I leave at 7 and get back home late)
-good camera
-solid construction/feel in the hand, got a little annoyed with the plastic, cheap construction of my Nexus five after handling a friends 6p

Now I was going to get a V20 because I like turning up the volume when I listen to music. And I ight still actually. Waiting for reviews of both phones. If the Pixel has at least average sound quality, I'll get it.

I'd rather get a op3, axon 7 or something and then be able to upgrade again sooner rather than blow loads of money on this pixel that's releasing late in this gen phone cycle with a barely better processor than phones that came out in the beginning of the year.

By that, I mean updates. Monthly security patches are becoming more and more important. Even Samsung takes it seriously now.

Really need some purchasing advice...

I'm waiting until Black Friday and Cyber Monday for phone prices to drop but I will definitely be getting a new phone after 3 comfy years with my Nexus 5.

Currently I'm torn between the HTC 10, Nexus 6P, and OnePlus 3.

My budget is negotiable but I'd be more comfortable spending around the $400 price range, but will go around $700 if need be.

I need a phone that is pretty much just a Nexus 5 but beefier (better battery, better chipset, better performance) and with a decent display, preferrably AMOLED. Front facing speakers and a decent camera are all good pluses to me but aren't a dealbreaker. I also need a phone that has decent community support and can be unlocked right out of the box (which means no Samshit crap).

I don't do much with my phone other than text, make calls, listen to music, and browse the internet, but I DO frequently play Ingress which is a very battery-heavy game.
>>
>>56927400
I pre-ordered the Pxel regular as a replacement to my 5X. To be honest, I was not a fan of the phone. It's a very middle of the road phone, and if you're only looking to listen to music, then I guess it'll work for you.

To give you an idea on the camera, this was shot with my 5X in panoramic view and HDR+. Here's hoping Pixel's camera is just as awesome as they say.

The tech geek in me feels so wrong about buying a one year old phone that was outdated when it came out, especially when the camera on the Pixel is supposedly the best shit ever.
>>
>>56927493
Mine has been chugging along pretty slowly, but it also has more mileage so I take it as just an affirmation that buying the Pixel is the right move.

I'm pretty stoked, I loved the size of the 5X and am glad there's a similarly sized Pixel for sale.
>>
>>56927493
i bought my wife the nexus 6
best purchase ever she loves the hueg screen
and i love that a 2 year old phone is getting nougat
>>

Just get a chinkphone, fuck Google
Mi series and most Redmi's have great CM support, there's no reason to chase the now overpriced Nexus 5X

>>
>>56927150
That's probably because you live in the US. In Europe the law is pretty clear about warranties.
If shit busts in the first 2 years minimum, they have to collect it and repair it in 30 days, past that you get a full refund, no matter the company.

>>
>>56923929
Like you need more than 100mb/s r/w speed in any scenario.
>>
>>56924134
Gyroscope could just detect how shaky is the phone, and adjusts shutter speed accordingly to reduce blur, at the same time you lose low light capabilities
Sony did this like a decade ago with "Digital Steadycam", other manufacturers too calling it digital stabilization and/or hybrid stabilization
With OIS you can get longer shutter speeds with less blur from movement
I'm pretty sure every phone has been doing what the Pixel is claiming for years, using the accelerometer
Though the Pixel could be doing extra processing using data from the gyroscope, like the reduce blur filer in Photoshop that uses deconvolution to hopefully remove the blur of the image, ie. it mathematically does the contrary to what movement from blur does, it kind of works
>>56924211
You don't need a gyroscope to do that, and iirc the Nexus 4 already did that
>>
>>56927403
I'm talking about community support, like custom ROMs, Cyanogenmod and stuff.
But thanks for the input anyway.
>>
>>56923852
Black white and gray are pretty much gender neutral. It's when you get a gold or "rose gold" (read: pink) phone that you start to look like a homosexual.
Standard gold generally makes you look like the trashier kind of gay, though. It makes you look like your sugar daddy bought it for you. Rose gold makes you look like you're still gay, but you don't need no man.
>>
>>56927679
Compare a phone with NVMe storage (iPhone 6s) to one which does not (Nexus 6p) and you will see the clear advantage
>>
>>56925958
OIS would be nice but supposedly it was ranked very high by dxo
>>
>>56925023
Redmi 3S was launched in July or June, it has a newer SoC than the other Redmi 3's
>>56926716
It's weird that the Redmi 3 doesn't have Android 6 while the 3S has it, they're almost the same phone
>>56926175
>Should ill just buy the redmi 3s and wait for support?
Yes, or you could get the Redmi 3 Pro that already has official CM support, or a Mi4
There's literally nothing good budget wise in any carrier in Mexico
>>
>>56927720
Yeah I too like to look at fancy lag hiding animations. Compare the HTC 10 with the iPhone 6s in daily tasks. Even fagbook loads faster on the 10.
I don't care about the storage speed benchmarks mate. Loading covers of the gallery doesn't need more than like 20mb/s.
btw Samshit's phones lag behind in these daily tasks test bc of their tons of useless features aka bloat.
>>
>>56927692
Oneplus phones have by far the best custom ROM support out of every manufacturer outside of Nexus phones, and you won't void the warranty if you unlock the bootloader or fuck up your phone when flashing a custom ROM or anything like that.

You're mistaken. It's Android phones that rely on big paper numbers, but falter in real world usage. The iPhone 6s is faster than any Android phone. We'll have to see how the Pixel fares however.
>>
>>56927951

The 820 is already a old SoC, it's absolutely raped by the A10
The 821 is still raped by the A10 but it's slightly faster than the 820
>>
>>56927983
So I should get an iPhone 7?
>>
>>56924095
I switched from a 6s and I love it ( 6s has better camera but not that much), best phone I've ever owned, still some minor annoyances from Android here and there but much better than the shit that is iOS 10.

>>56927995

dude that stabilization is amazing and works even better than OIS. I worked with that shit over the summer because I was interning in the camera team...

ITS HERE AND I JUST RAN OUT OF RETURN WARRANTY FOR MY OP3
>>
>>56924095
>My thoughts on the OP3 and Pixel about 2 weeks or so ago. Was I wrong?

As for the OP3, I only had two weeks I think with it (that was the return policy stretch).
It was the fastest, 'coolest' device temp-wise, and longest lasting phone I've had. Then again, I've only owned the 5/5x previously. I loved Oxygen OS. I only ever had the Nexus' and Oxy OS felt like a ROM-- cool gestures, tweaks, music control, etc. It was almost like PureNexus ROM in a way.
The charging was beautiful, which I've missed. I'm pretty good with carrying my wall adapter/cable with me for any device so now that this device charged 60% in 30 minutes AND the OP3 stayed cool, was amazing. This allows me to save money on buying an external battery too. The SOT was about 5-6, maybe 5 if I played Pokemon a lot.

The price in Canada is $519 and if I'm comparing it to the $499 5x (as of now in Canada from the Google Store), these devices are on par in the market. Go for the OP3 if you need to choose.

As for the Pixel, no idea what that is going to be like but I'm 99% confident it'll either be too expensive or just too good of a phone. As exampled from my 5x review, I don't do much. I just want a reliable phone that'll last me.
>>
Think I'll get the Pixel. Do you guys think it matters to wait for the general public to get their hands on it first or should I preorder it?

I'm kinda thinking along the lines of shit people find out about these phones like a week after they get them. like explodng batteries and that kinda shit, you must know what I mean.
>>
>Best screen
>One of the best cameras
>Waterproof
>Latest processor
>Long lasting battery
>MicroSD card slot
>Nice design
>Neat stylus

The Note 7 is almost perfect except for it exploding (which should be fixed soon), the price and touchjizz. I'd argue that this phone is definitely worth the price when you consider all the advantages it has over other phones. Only thing is I've never been a fan of touchjizz and I feel like it always acts up once I root.

Other providers do not give you unlimited data. They give you "unlimited data", which slows to shit/overcharges you after the cap. Sprint is the only one with actually unlimited data.

Fi is actually pretty sweet. Uses both T-mobile and Sprint, automatically switches to which carrier has the strongest LTE signal.

You automatically get international roaming through T-Mobile, which is not capped to 128kbps like T-Mobile plans.

You get free data sim cards connected to your account. They use T-mobile(for device support) and use data at the $10/GB price. But you can put them into anything and the cards are free.

Fi automatically connects to open WiFi networks and secures the connection with a VPN.

I was worried about the high data price at first, but I'm on WiFi everywhere now. Placed I didn't even know had open WiFi. It's nice not paying for data that you don't use.

You get bands 2(1900mhz)/4(1700&2100mhz)/12(700mhz)/25(1900mhz)/26(800mhz)/41(2500mhz)

Plus it less you roam on ATT and Verizon in areas with roaming agreements.

Mini review of 5x

Pros:
>still the cheapest bang for your buck outright phone in Canada
>camera and bloat free Android is great
>constant Google updates fix """"problems"""" monthly
>good phone size for one handed use
>videos and text look great
>charging is good / 1-2 hours full 100% if you DON'T use the phone while charging
>upon fresh reboot, phone is the fastest device I've ever held
If rooted:
>easy to root / Pure Nexus ROM + Ex Kernel made my device faster and last longer battery wise
>no reboots necessary, always runs great

Cons:
>overpriced in Canada. Find a friend in the US to buy it for you. I made the mistake to buy it full price at $499, 32GB
>battery does 4hrs SOT tops, with no extensive apps like Pokémon GO or Snapchat
>gets hot as fuck. Slows down if it gets passed 45 degrees C.
>heat will destroy your battery, will not let the phone charge if you've pushed the 5x too much
>plastic build makes it feel cheap as hell Again, get this for the ~$250 US price tag to justify
If rooted:
>battery is still 4hrs SOT
>phone stays WAY cooler, not as many heat issues but Pokémon still kills it

tl;dr I liked it, esp coming from the 5 and didn't want to cash out $700. If in Canada, do NOT buy full retail price from the Google Canada Store. Go for a Newegg or some type of reputable retailer that will sell it to you for the US prices.
I ended up selling it for a decent $450.

Tl;dr
For $200usd sure
