I started with Arch and it took an entire weekend to get it installed and working. Not much more maintenance after that.

I messed up at almost every step and had to format and restart twice, but I sure did learn a bit from it.

If you had paid attention during installation, you would have noted that sudo gets installed if you do not give root a password.

I tried Ubuntu a few times but fucking around with PPAs always left a bad taste in my mouth. Go for an Arch-based distro with AUR support.

No, it shouldn't. There is very good reason not to have sudo on multiuser machines. It's because that not being specifically given sudo privileges is something that can be gotten around with a little work, without knowing the root password. Su doesn't suffer from that problem. If you don't have the root password, you're not going to use it. In a production environment it's very understandable that the admin wouldn't want just anyone fucking around with root privileges.
