So i have both the GIGABYTE GTX 970 GV-N970G1 4GD GAMING OC and the SAPPHIRE TRI-X OC Radeon R9 290X sitting on my desk right now, and i can't decide which i want to put in, which one is better?

giving the spare to my little brother to help his build

You'll probably get better framerates in most games with the 970, but not by a lot. It will also have lower power draw and heat so it would probably be the better choice between the two.

The 290X is actually beating out the 970 in some games these days. Seems that either AMD's drivers are getting better or nvidia is gimp hardware.

Honestly? Performance wise theyre about the same.
The 290x is going to use more power but based on my experience involving 4 way crossfire of that exact card, their max temp is pretty decent and theyre quiet

pick which one is sexier to your build, or choose the opposite of what you want your brothers build to look like

The 290x ruins the 970 in anything recent and is the same in older shillworks games. Also DX12/Vulkan and no 3.5+0.5 meme.

Similar perf, but the 970 allows you to stream with moonlight. That would be my pick.
