Because Kubuntu is shit. MATE is best mix of how everything looks with minimal tweaks, and having enough options to play with.

What annoyed me most on Kubuntu was it wasn't a terminal you were opening. It was a Konsole. So the normal key bindings of CTRL+ALT+T didn't open a terminal window like it does on 99% of other *Buntu distributions.

I admit, KDE could be better here. It defaults to broken f24-theme (see pic) instead of Breeze. And I can't remove that because it's default so I'm stuck with two completely dysfunctional relics. The menu defaults are also bad, had to remove ton of dupes. Bad defaults issue aside solid as fuck.
>>
I don't hate KDE but I've never liked it either. It's always felt like something that was designed by and for 15 year olds because of the sheer amount of half-finished garbage everywhere. KDE 5 isn't really any different, if anything it's worse because apparently blinding white and fist-sized outlines of icons are what people want now.

Gentoo is not a meme, it takes a little more investment upfront when starting out but it pays dividends down the road when you have a system that isn't completely beholden to Xorg

It's much easier and more straightforward to setup your kernel from scratch and install only what you need from the get go. Even if you do a Ubuntu minimal install you usually don't compile anything and you're still forced to take a bunch of additional utilities on to make your system useable.

Yeah, there's (almost) nothing you can do in gentoo you can't in Ubuntu, but Gentoo is designed to be much more customization friendly, and at that point there's no reason to pick Ubuntu specifically either as every other distort can do the same things too.

Gentoo's also pretty much the only distort based around Portage from the start.

>Kubuntu or KDE Neon for a beginner?

Kubuntu is the best out of the box KDE distro, mostly because it's Ubuntu, but also because the devs have literally nothing better to do than make it good.

They don't have an OS to worry about, the main ubuntu team have that covered.

They don't have KDE to work on, the KDE team have that covered.

So the Kubuntu team's only purpose in life is to make the combination seamless and polished. That's what they do, day in and day out.

The caveat is you need a dedicated GPU specifically for the Windows VM.

KDE password manager that for SOME FUCKING REASON is a dependency for the entire KDE system. You can't even install goddamn Krita without having Kwallet.

Not true, I have everything apart from kmail2 installed and there is no kwallet on my system. I remember it being there in the kde4 days but that was made silent by giving it a null password and always allowing it, couldn't even see that thing after that. Looks like your distro is shit.
