Debating on whether to swap out Pro for Enterprise LTSB on my laptop because updates take for fucking ever to install and I don't want it asking to install updates every other week when I need to use my laptop for the next half hour.

Guys I need help with overclocking
I have a 4770k with a H100i GTX(installed just now).

I'm at 4.2ghz at 1.2 volts and my Prime95 temps is at 90c, which I think should be closer to 80c.
I set the profile in Corsair Link to "Perfromance"

I have the fans set to pull intake, should I try flipping it to exhaust?
Reapply thermal paste(currently fresh Gelid Extreme)?

So can you get busted by people policing the IP list of a torrent site if you live in another country?

I guess I don't know a non-retarded way to ask, so I'll be blunt; If I live in the US, and ban all US peers from my torrent peer lists, does that mean I'm safe?
>>
>>56864848
Do not that it could also be too little thermal paste, though. But with temps over 90 degrees Celsius, I'd think too much is more likely.
Too much, and it acts like an insulator. Too little and your CPU block won't make proper contact with your CPU's IHS.

What you want to see when you take the block off is a nice thin, even layer of thermal paste without air bubbles.

How bad is it to change a native 1920x1200 to be 1920x1080 in resolution settings or should I keep it 1920x1200 and live with black bars ?
>>
>>56864951
Pretty sure it's only possible in specific cases, hence why a full divide operation is needed in the general case.

If you want modulo by a power of 2, you and the number by that minus 1. So, x modulo 8 is x&7.

Should still work, but if you can, getting them on the same circuit will generally give better speeds. If you have three phase or split phase mains, try to use the same phase.
>>
>>56865623
If you put it in 1920x1080 you will still have black bars. If you set the monitor to stretch, you will have nonsquare pixels, which will make circles look stretched and faces too long. And since it's stretched you lose all the sharpness you expect from an LCD.

Just live with the black bars. If you had a 1920x1080 of the same width, it would be the same size as the picture you're getting, and the black bars would be bezel and empty space. You have that same size, plus a bit of extra you can make use of for programming, browsing and many games.

For VMware: Select "Other Linux 3.x kernel (64 bit)" or whatever as the OS, depending if it's 32 or 64 bit. "Other 64 bit" should work too. Tell it you'll install the OS later instead of showing it an ISO. This opts out of the "easy install" nonsense that is failing to detect your distro.

When you're done setting up the VM, edit its CD drive. Put your ISO in it and check "connect at startup". Boot your VM, and from there it should be similar to installing it on a real computer.

Look for messages at boot, when it shows the OEM logo, like "press F1 for setup" or "press enter to interrupt normal startup". Do what it says and you'll either get into a text based setup utility or a menu of things that includes setup. Get to setup and use arrows (or mouse if your system is fancy) to navigate. Look for an option labeled VT-x or virtualization. Switch it to enabled, then right arrow over to exit, save changes and exit. Then it'll boot up and you should have VT-x on.

Or, download the 32 bit version, tell VMware it's 32 bit, and use it without VT-x enabled. It might perform slower by a small amount, but it'll work.

>>
>>56866243
Probably because 4chan uses Cloudflare. Cloudflare uses the same IPs to proxy through to many sites, so if your ISP blocked the IP you access 4chan through, it would block many other sites. So they block looking up "4chan.org" in their DNS. Therefore you can bypass by using another DNS like 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4.

But many porn sites don't use Cloudflare, and they're at an IP that hosts nothing else. So your ISP can simply block all access to that IP. Then even if you change DNS, it will not help you.

I did some tests on a new hard drive in a previous thread after running into a long chain of problems (Lockups, downloads failing, sudden restarts, etc.) and results indicated that the HDD was failing. (It's possible that I may have just bought a faulty hard drive. It can happen. Pic related.)

But I was wondering if was possible that it could have just been a faulty SATA cable instead that was causing the problems? I spent so much money recently trying to replace everything only to run into the same problems over and over again.

>>
>>56866791
If you have trouble getting into your bios, you might have to disable secure boot from windows 8/10. You might also need to look up your mobo or pc manual for specific instructions.

>>56866796
Skype has been 'botnet' for a long ass time. Expect every call/message sent through skype to be recorded permanently, and possibly watched by some seedy agent out there. But if you're not doing anything illegal, you just have to worry about the ickyness of knowing inmate shit might be watched. They've had problems with that, but it's not skype exclusively. Microsoft will also mine the fuck out of your information, and no, there's really no way to control that.

>>56866811
Did you have the problems before aniversary? You could always do a clean install and/or disable windows update.

>>56867008
>what parts can I recycle

The case, and maybe some of the drives, but I wouldn't really use the drives even if you had an IDE adapter. You've basically got something less capable than a raspberry pie that consumes several times the power. Stick linux or xp on it and play around, but mostly old systems are just used for legacy programs/gaming.

>>56867178
Doubt it's the cable, but it doesn't take much to check. Did you have problems before replacing the drive?
>>

Ok /g/ I got a problem.

I have been playing this game since 2011 and logged quite a few hours in it. However the game doesn't keep exactly how many I played. It does keep a log file every time you play the game which tracks when you booted it up and closed it out. These log files also contain timestamps. I'm wondering if it is possible to math it out and figure how much time I have in the game.

I can't do it manually because there is around 1800+ files.

Any solutions?

>Doubt it's the cable, but it doesn't take much to check. Did you have problems before replacing the drive?

Yes, same problems as described in my previous post. I replaced the drive and it was fine for a while and soon enough the problems came back again. (At least I could actually download files properly with the new drive. But that was the only improvement)

I just always had this impression that SATA cables never fail. But now I'm suspecting that it was a faulty HDD AND a faulty SATA cable that was causing issues. You won't believe all the shit I've had to go through over the past month.

I know there still are a couple million people still out there, but I didn't expect that infection reached into /g/. I'd try a different DNS and see if that helps.

>>56867292
I doubt it's both. Actually, if you haven't been cloning your OS, I'm starting to think you might have a motherboard issue, or possibly a problem with your PSU if you chalk the downloads thing up to something else.
>>
>>56867345
Eventually maybe, but probably not on a timeline that makes it beneficial to keep it.

I've already replaced the motherboard and GPU, followed by HDD in that order. Replacing the HDD has mitigated problems regarding lockups, sudden restarts and download problems (Which another anon has pointed out was an IO issue in a previous thread) until they started up again.

Wow, that's a rough line of things to replace. Well, I'd grab a sata cable from a dvd drive or another computer and try with it just in case. But if that's OK and you did reinstall your OS from scratch when you got the new drive, then it looks like we've settled on PSU by process of elimination.

(I made sure they were compatible, and I told the installer that I would restart the PC later) Turning on the PC has been weird as well: Doesn't boot straight away, fan spins a bit and stops several times, etc.

1Gbps=1000Mbps. If your router and network cards are also gigabit, and your ethernet cables are cat 5e or above, then your whole wired network will be gigabit. Forget the 16Gbps thing.

>>56867686
No, I doubt you had more than one physical problem. But sometimes narrowing it down can be a huge PITA. If you've replaced the drive, cable, mobo and os, then the only thing left that could be affecting your drive test results is the PSU, although that would still be an unusual thing to cause that particular problem. If those were the only symptoms, I would wait and see if you really are still experiencing lockups/shutdowns, but the fan/bootup issue isn't a great sign. I don't suppose you have a PSU you could borrow from another PC?

My CPU fan has been acting weird lately, when I start my computer it runs normally, but during the course of an hour or two it slows down (once it even "reached" 0RPM, although the fan was still running irl). Also, the CPU temperature sometimes reaches 100°C, but when I touch the case (near the region where the CPU socket is located) it doesn't feel very hot (and I have never experimented with overclocking before, so I suppose the CPU would shut down before reaching such a high temperature, right?)

I am starting to wonder whether the problem lies not in my CPU fan, but on the BIOS/software I am using to measure/read the cou fan speed/cpu core temperature
would such a thing even be possible? How could I find out for sure? And how could I fix it?

Oh, and I started to have problems with my CPU fan a while after one of the Windows 10 updates, could that be somehow related?

How do I separate PHP and HTML? Some people online say PHP as a template language is not supposed to be separated, but I want my IDE (Intellij IDEA) to use the correct syntax highlightning and when the file has the .html extension, it does not highlight the php parts correctly. See screenshot.
>>
How do I turn this shit off?
>>
>>56867860
I should add, I have already tried <?php include 'php_part.php'; ?> but apparently for this I need to configure HTML files to be processed as PHP which is supposed to be a bad idea.

>If those were the only symptoms, I would wait and see if you really are still experiencing lockups/shutdowns, but the fan/bootup issue isn't a great sign. I don't suppose you have a PSU you could borrow from another PC?

No... I don't... The drive test results were from before I replaced the HDD + SATA (After I had replaced the mobo and GPU). I'll give it some time and maybe resinstall the OS again just to be sure. But I REALLY don't want to place another order with Overclockers for a PSU. All my PC component deliveries have been sent consecutively one after the other and were delivered by the same delivery guy and I don't want him to think I'm some weird loser or something... >_<

Maybe I should get a surge protector just in case as well... Christ... I really hope I don't have to replace the processor and RAM as well. All these problems started when I had a new driver installed for my old GPU on my old setup, then it's been one thing after the other.
>>
>>56867860
Well first of all change the extension to .php and not .html. I always put the PHP code before the first <html> tag.

After the latest update I got yesterday, my laptop went retarded.
A bunch of programs quit working, and I'm getting windows popups saying they couldn't start or I'm missing DLL files.
I tried SFC and DISM - neither scan can complete.
I tried reinstalling the system files with the Media Creation Tool, but it can't even load.
I tried doing a full reset - can't complete either.
My hard drives are reading that they're still in good health, I ran chkdsk for like 3 fuckin' hours and it ultimately did nothing.

Is wiping and reinstalling from scratch my next option or am I forgetting anything?
>>
>>56867889
FWIW the fedex man probably doesn't think shit about you. Loads of people buy their parts individually as they go on sale. It's trivially easy to memtest your ram, but I highly doubt memory/cpu have anything to do with this. I would have considered a PSU issue long before replacing the GPU. Also I'd shop around for your parts

why do people "lie" on torrent comment sections? or are they just legitimately retarded and don't know how to install stuff / don't allow it in anti virus, etc.

like some comments are so wrong that it's apparent that they have not even downloaded the torrent and are just talking out of their asses ("torrent has only .exe and no crack" when there obviously is one). even when the uploader is a verified VIP or whatever.

It isn't really a bug because the software isn't really being designed for testing overclocked systems. The reason that this problem exists is because usually Intel CPUs will downclock when receiving an AVX instruction set. This doesn't work properly with overclocked CPUs, though, so they overheat.

Posted in other thread and I'll try to shorten but still long.

I'm not sure if I don't play video games because I got bored or because I physically can't on my mac (regret).

I need a new laptop for light assignments etc as well as some light games such as sims etc. and am an engineering student so will probably use cad in a few years time.

I also live at home.

Do I now buy a cheap laptop/£300-400 with ssd and MAYBE build an expensive PC too?

Or

Do I buy a better laptop (£600) and no PC? (Cheaper overall)

My problem is that I'm not sure if I want to spend £1000 on a PC if I'm not sure if I'll even game that intensively but at the same time I'm not sure if I should get a cheap laptop first and wait to decide or just go for a moderate laptop?

Verizon's towers have the best coverage of the 4 networks, so if you care most about that, go with them or one of their MVNOs. At&t is runner up, followed distantly by sprint then t-mobile.

I wouldn't invest a lot of money now in a laptop you want to be powerful in a few years from now. If you spend most of your time at home, pouring the lion's share of your resources into a desktop is probably a good idea. Only you can decide how important portability/upgradablility is to you.

>>56871002
It's subjective, but I think most people wouldn't find 4k worth it on a 15.6 screen, and it will put a lot of pressure on your GPU and battery. But the build quality looks good though.

>>56871065
In general none. Older revisions of HDMI have certain limitations, but I doubt a monitor that old would have high enough requirements to saturate any hdmi spec anyway.

>>56871175
Pretty much all over the registry. You would need to look for settings on an individual basis. Going to the registry is more of a last resort.

>>

Thanks man for the advice about pouring resources into a desktop. I'll do that.

The only problem I'm having really is the budget seems to creep more and more to a point where is probably more powerful than I need it to be. Same with monitors, ever since I've looked at ultra wide 1440p monitors, anything less just seems much worse but the downside of this is the extra cost and also extra cost for the hardware to support it.

Well, if 1440p is your line in the sand, then you'll want the RX 480 for good graphics or the 1070 if you're more inclined to push settings, which it sounds like you aren't. You can get 1440 monitors for under $300. That mostly narrows down the decision making to the processor. I wouldn't go lower than an i5, going up to an i7 depends on what you want, but processors tend to stay crispy for a long time, so you might not want to skimp there.

>>56871748
Well that's the literal cheapest. Dell core 2 duos are just the defacto minimal when you need a cheap laptop for simple browsing. They tend to be sturdy and long lasting. I'd throw a $20 SSD in there if you want it to feel more responsive. You can also find early i5's in the $150-200 range as well.

I lowered it to 4ghz at 1.1v and it ran at a around 70-75c, then 1.2v jolted up to 90 immediately. If I left it on for any amount of time, it probably would have easily gone over 100c

It can be a PITA with laptops. If you're lucky you can bypass it with the right code. Otherwise you have call tech support and hope you can convince them you're the legit owner.

>>56872236
It depends on how determined you are to not reinstall anything. Clean installing windows to the SSD would probably be the easiest if you don't mind reinstalling your programs. You could also copy your files to an external drive, temporarily delete the originals, and clone your OS using Macrium reflect. Then you'd just make a new partition on your old HDD and copy everything back. If you wanted to keep your old install without using an external drive, you'd probably need to use a paid program like acronis.

So I work 9-10 hours a day doing C++ development, I don't dislike it, but I don't think I enjoy it as much as most people at my company do considering some do nothing but work all day. I don't do that much during my spare time, probably to wind down from work, but I feel like it is a waste considering so many people work on side projects or contribute to open source projects during their spare time. How do you all motivate yourselves to do something productive during your spare time, is it just that drive to learn new things or do you force yourselves just to keep yourself from stagnating in your field?

It probably just isn't compatible yet. Firefox made a big jump with E10, and they're on the verge of phasing out certain standards they've been using in their addons for years. When that happens, loads of pluggins are going to have to be rewritten to work with newer versions of firefox at all. Running nightly means you're getting features that pluggin developers haven't had much time to accommodate.

How do I pick a good laptop for Engineering major? I'm a freshman and no class requires a laptop, but literally all of them are much better with a laptop.

>In Intro to Engineering they get to keep all their work on one machine instead of saving to clouds or emailing to themselves or storing it on usbs.
>In English they can edit their papers alongside the professor during class
>In Calc 1 they can work on the homework as the professor lectures on the homework topic

I know I'm gonna end up needing to do some 3d modeling and maybe computations but aside from that I dunno.

In oracle sql, the following INSERT statement:

INSERT INTO copy_d_events
(ID, Name, Event_Date, Description, Cost, Venue_ID, Package_Code, Theme_Code, Client_Number)
VALUES
(110, 'Ayako Anniversary', TO_DATE('JULY 7,2004', 'Month fmdd, yyyy'), 'Party for 50,sixties dress, decorations', '', 245, 79, 240, 6655);

returns the following error: "ORA-01400: cannot insert NULL into ("SQL_SCHEMA"."COPY_D_EVENTS"."COST")"
In the copy_d_events table, the Cost column is not nullable. But the Costs of each event is not provided.
>pic related

Entering zero would be incorrect, because the events costs are not zero. They are simply unknown.
Also, making the costs column nullable is explicitly prohibited.

Honestly, doing 40 hours a week of code, and then coding in your spare time sounds like a great way to get burnt out as fuck. I mean yes, there are people who really dig that sort of thing, but if you don't, why not try stretching your mind in another way or just enjoying your free time until you find something that inspires you? Maybe start trying out skills for a career change down the road. How many people do the same thing for 30 years? Hell, what are the odds your job will even exist at that point?

Sounds like you won't be doing anything hardware intensive, but I'd look into the recommended specs for whatever applications you'll be using in your program. If you're not gaming you pretty much just need to pick a size, budget, and determine if you care about IPS or not.

Backup your data.

Then download the Win10 iso from Microsoft, put it on USB, and reinstall. Activation is bound to the hardware, so no problem there.

usually mobos are configured to detect RAM memories in 2 first then 4 for best performance, using them simultaneously (don't know what exactly it was called) and 1 + 2 and 3 + 4 are connected together meaning that they just stack and don't run faster. 95% sure it says it on your mobo installation guide

So how much RAM you have is somewhat irrelevant.

I'm looking to make a new home server, mainly to act as a NAS.

Currently I'm using an old dell workstation with two xeon CPUs, but it's huge, loud, and uses a shitload of power.

Would like to look into something a bit more power efficient, that I could hopefully toss 10 TB+ of storage into. Bonus points if it's not ridiculously huge/loud.

Any ideas?

I'm currently thinking my main options are to build something custom, buy a NAS and somehow get Linux on it, or buy a single-board computer and hook it up to a bunch of hard drives.

Is the extra resolution worth the extra money? Can you afford the upgrade? Can your GPU support the extra work for your vidya? I'm not you, I can't tell you. Make a decision for yourself.

One issue with higher resolution at the same size is that some systems don't use scalable graphics, so you are forced to read super tiny text. Otherwise the higher resolution is nicer.

Personal preference bro. Loads of people are happy with 1080p screens. But especially at 25"+ it can make a difference. Go down to bestbuy or visit a friend who has it and see if you like it enough to justify the additional cost for screen+GPU power.

Hey /g/urus, I've run in to a bit of a problem with my USBs (I think). In the last 2-3 weeks my mouse has randomly started to disconnect. The thing is that this doesn't seem like a "disconnect" as in that windows would inform that "Usb device has been disconnected" instead the red light is still on, but the mouse just doesn't work. Now last monday my keyboard did kinda the same. It ceases to function and the lights blink, same with the mouse. Now the same happened yesterday, and again today. The first time the problem seemed to solve itself and I continued on with my stuff. Now after 40minutes I powered off my computer and restarted. In the boot menu everything was working fine and now I am typing this here.

I really have no idea what to do here. Tried to google but couldn't find anything with the same exact problem.

Should I keep using ubuntu gnome or should I just get Fedora?

I've been enjoying it, as it is the best linux experience I've had thus far.

The only problem with Ubuntu Gnome is that on my second monitor I can't change the resolution after a certain point. It is a 1280x1024 monitor and it's stuck at 1024x720. It's using a DVI-VGA adapter but on windows I don't have that problem, it just werks.
