M.2 is literally PCIe (and/or SATA)
You can get a PCIe to M.2 PCIe adapter card pretty cheap if you would prefer to get a M.2 SSD and maybe move it to a real M.2 slot in the future

In theory a full PCIe card SSD can be faster since M.2 is limited to 4 lanes

I didn't think flv can be packed with ddl, to execute malicious code.

I doubt a video file can run the actual malware unless you run it yourself.

How many hours per week do you spend on homework/assignments as a CompSci student?

I'm a freshman and I'm spending 4 hours a day on homework. Am I retarded?
>>
>>56837747
>I'm a freshman and I'm spending 4 hours a day on homework. Am I retarded?
Stanford CS students spend about 20 hours per week on problem sets, so no, you're probably not retarded (unless you're taking like 1 class, then maybe, but more likely you just need to visit office hours more).
>>
>>56837758
>Stanford CS students
I'm not going to such a high tier university. Just a simple college.
>>
>>56837792
my experience (mid-tier public university, stanford, and community college) is that aside from community college, the university's rank doesn't affect the rigor of the courses that much.

but even if it did, that way of thinking about things should lead you to expect that you're proportionately less competent than a stanford student that even if your classes are 50% as hard as a stanford course, you're also 50% as competent as a stanford student, and the course load should be roughly the same.

also i just double checked and actually ~20 units seems to translate to 40 hours per week. i was looking at my course load, but since i only take ~8-10 units (grad student), i only clock about half of a typical undergrad workload (the other 20+ hours go to research).

also, for real, go to office hours. i can't tell you how many hours grad students and professors waste just sitting around waiting for someone to ask them for help. and then we get like a dozen emails from different students asking for accommodations because they had some issue that they should have brought to our attention ages ago.

once someone emailed me on the last day of the quarter for entering that he failed a pass/fail seminar because he didn't sign in for any of the talks. you sign in with a google form. we sent 3 emails to every student in the last 2 weeks, and 2 additional emails to everyone who was failing, and he didn't pipe up till grades were entered.

this shit drives me fucking crazy. you're not retarded. just get some assistance. we're literally paid to help you pass.

So it's looking increasingly likely that my cats will outlive me, what's the best way to be sure they are well cared for after I am gone? They are the only family I have left and it would be heartbreaking to think of them getting sent off to some cramped shelter and later euthanized or something.
>>
>>56837792
I think your fellow students would be the ones to ask. And maybe talk to a campus sponsored tutor/your advisor about whether it's possible to pick up the pace. But as long as you're getting the work done, it really doesn't matter how long it takes everyone else. Some people are just slower at academics.
>>
>>56837747
I usually did fuck all until it came around midterm time or when some major project was due and then I'd do a week or so of frenzied catching up to get it done in time. Though of course this will depend on the course and university.

If all of the resources currently owned by people were distributed 100% equally, would there be no poverty or hunger anymore?
>>
>>56837937
you can look at different sources, they cite different amounts. it really depends on the university's norms, and even then professors move around often enough that it's hard to really force them to adhere to anything. certainly, i've never heard of a course being adjusted (or an instructor being admonished) for giving students too much work for a 4 or 5 unit course.

all that being said, i've heard that 1 unit = 3 hours of work per week, but there are differing opinions on that. for example, UMichigan apparently says that 1 unit should equal 2-3 hours outside of class. stanford says 2 hours outside of class, plus 1 in class. this might sound like nitpicking, but the outcomes at 16-20 units or more each additional hour stacks up.

also, it depends heavily on the individual. these estimates are totally wrong for many, many people. if you breeze through problem sets, or if your major involves a lot of reading and you just blow right through readings, then 2 hours per unit makes no sense for you.

Some would lack the ability to use their resources.

It would be moronic.

poverty is relative, so yes.
if just all food waste was distributed to the hungry there would be no hunger
if you were to redistribute all resources, the system by which we produce resources would be destroyed

How do you make conditional hotkeys on GNOOOOO Linux? I want to bind "escape" to send Alt+F4 only if a Pidgin window is active. What program do I use? Xbindkeys doesn't do conditionals afaik.
>>

>>
>>56838152
It doesn't really. There was IronAHK but it's abandoned and trash. Linux has a few programs like Xbindkeys that are functional for most tasks but can't into conditionals.
>>
>>56838008
>would there be no poverty or hunger anymore?

Anything gained would be irrelevant and quickly slide back to the previous ways.

You need to set up infrastructure for resource distribution and informed management. The type of resource distribution and management is currently only set up to accommodate capitalism. To get rid of poverty, you need to get rid of the conditions that create it. Capitalism is probably the largest condition that poverty hinges on.

This is also why charity tends not to work. It's not attacking the problem at its root.

I have a small problem with my arduino project. I have two xbee's which have been set up to communicate, these are working fine. I have a sketch which is sending data from an analogue joystick to the other Xbee mounted on an Arduino wireless SD shield, which is plugged into an Arduino Mega 2560. This arduino is using the hardware TX,RX (0, 1) pins. When both arduino's are plugged in, the Uno begins sending data. the Mega only receives this data whilst I hold down the reset button. The empty space doesn't have much affect on the size of your backup, plus clonezilla compresses the file contents, so your backup could easily 250GB or less, depending on what kinds of files you have. However if your original backup is of a 500GB partition, you will need at least 500GB of free space if you want to restore it.

Anyone got a good tutorial on setting up a local server on debian? It will simply act as a backup and file storing server. I've already installed debian onto the desktop I'll be using but skipped installing the GUI and went straight for terminal (I'm comfortable with terminal.)

Really stupid question for a networking homework. I feel like it's a trap question so I'm not so sure. it's just the beginning of the semester so I'm sure it will be baby shit for most of you

They give us the result of a tracert command to some website. the result is the roud-trip time inbetween each routers on the path leading to the address. They're asking which router you'd upgrade to improve the network. I feel like simply upgrading a router would have basically no consequence since all it could do (I believe) is reduce the processing delay time, which is already in the scale of microseconds, which is insignificant. To reduce the transmission delay and the queuing delay, you'd need : lines with better bandwidth in the first case, and more alternative paths to reduce congestion at the routers that are overrun in the second, but upgrading the router itself wouldn't (I think) have any incidence on those two types of delays. Or am I completely wrong here?
>>
Here's my stupid question, /g/.

I'm a programming student, mostly self taught (but I have taken a few courses at the community college), and I feel fairly competannt in my ability to solve problems, come up with algorithms, etc. My biggest problem is that all of my programs look fucking ugly because they're in the console.

I've learned the basics of HTML and CSS, and I can make a decent website, but I don't know shit about GUIs. Every tutorial I've done has ended before going into it. I'm emphasizing learning C# right now and the only tutorial I've found is the "Designing a User Interface" on msdn.

If you're asking that here, then you're probably at a point where you're particularly unequipped to answer that for yourself. Also the question hinges on the idea that there are right and wrong answers, like life has meaning and truth is absolute. Any meaning beyond physics and cause/effect is just perspective. Every person has their own reasons to enjoy or loath living. Whether it's worth it to you depends on what you've got, what you are and how you see it. Some people are lucky enough to experience the world in such a way that it really doesn't matter what happens to them, they're happy with almost anything. Other people have everything and are never happy. And your life could do a complete 180 tomorrow or in 10 years. Or you could change comparatively little. Being human's a trip.

Go with an s6. s7 isn't any better for the price hop and s6's are pretty cheap now. make sure to swap the sim cards, don't go for a new plan.

I have two drives, one is my old Windows 7 install, one is my new one. Each was installed with the other unplugged, so as not to fuck everything up(because Windows). Will leaving both plugged in while installing Debian on a third drive mess up the bootloader's on the Windows drives? As a fallback, I'd like to be able to just select them as the first boot drive and have it work if I ever manage to fuck up the Debian drive, but for day-to-day usage I'd like to use GRUB to select which to boot into.

Internally within the CPU, sort of, it'll guess which way a branch instruction will go before it completes, then if it's wrong, the partly completed instuctions on the path it guessed will be cancelled.
At the software level, no.

Use EFI then your life will be full of happiness, all the bootloaders are just regular files sitting on a FAT32 partition.

Hi guize

I run an encrypted storage for my laptop and I've just now managed to shrink it a bit.

I want to make another partition so I can dualboot XP on it.
Problem being; how can I dualboot XP and Fedora with encryption on?

I already have Fedora set up so I'd like to avoid having to reinstall.

Thanks

trying to install the nvidia 900 series drivers on a new windows 7 computer
when it gets to installing the geforce experience it fails because microsoft .net framework fails to initialize
at the start of the program it says that it tries to download and install the framework. I've tried installing it separately and the installation always fails
what should I do to get the drivers up and working?

Dead pixels are usually white, right? I just noticed a brown spot on my monitor, I think it's probably a stuck pixel. Currently using some pixel-fixer software, hopefully it works.

I am a dumb fuck. It was just a speck on my screen. All I had to do was scrub it with a microfiber cloth and it came right off.
Separate issue, but there are a few tiny pixels on my monitor that are permanently white. Is there any way to fix those? According to the manual, a few dead pixels within several million are "normal."

Do you get an error message when installing .net?

>>56845718
dead/stuck pixels either look like a black spot or a bright red, green, or blue. Brown isn't a stuck pixel, it'll be something physical.

depends
the best value solution would be buying a 2nd hand computer (as long as the owner lets you try it and its not EXTREMELLY obsolete
even if the comptuer itself is shit, if its just 10€ boom, you already have a case for a computer, and you could buy retail and get a computer for 140€, or less if you use more 2nd hand components
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/FZVXRG

hell if you want to be more of a cheapstake you can even buy a 5€ CRT or pick one up for free

Is there a way to compile in VS without all the extra shit thrown in with a project? I'd like to be able to work on something in both windows and linux (my laptop and desktop run different OS's) without a lot of work or mess. I already know I'm probably a retard for wanting this and not just using gcc on both, but it would be nice to see if this is an option. Also on that note what are the comfiest compiled languages to use across different OS's?
>>
>>56846232
The thing is, I already have one I built for them ~6 years ago but the parts are all pretty obsolete. I could recycle the case, power supply and optical drive but I'd have to buy an OEM copy of Windows and Microsoft office for them which sets me back $200 already.
>>
>>56846454
why buy ms office when you can use openoffice/libreoffice or pirate
why buy windows if you can use an open source operating system or pirate
in fact that 6 year old computer would probably run faster if u did a fresh windows install or installed linux
