It's a stepping stone to more robust AR devices. They want something people can actually afford and went the route of making a useless piece of trash instead of a hopelessly expensive device with real functionality. Their long term plan is probably something similar to HoloLens or Magic Leap. Their computer vision capacity makes this a dead giveaway.
