With gui: Thunar
Just terminal: ranger
Total commander. God bless Ghisler.
Thunar is great and I like midnight commander for terminal.

Total Commander. Seriously it is the best. I wish there was something as good on linux.

THIS is the only acceptable answer if you want something that's fast and responsive. Surprised to see it mentioned only once.
Dolphin if you're looking for features.

Most of the goodness of dolphin with better kpart integration and tiling

I love thunar too, but it crashes a lot.
Now I'm in search for a good, light-weight file manager.

I had issues with spacefm recognising my phone. I found most of the features to be unnecessary, just as with pcmanfm.
I mainly use nautilus + cli. Ranger if I want to quickly locate system files I don't know the name of.

Dolphin
Total Commander
Speakig of Dolphin: does anyone know to make it close an sftp connection and forget the auth details? I type "sftp://user@host" in the address bar, authenticate with a password and do shit on the remote host. When I'm done, I close the tab but that doesn't seem to close the connection, netstat shows an active connection used by sftp.so process running indefinitely even after closing Dolphin completely. Then, even if I kill the sftp process, restart Dolphin and use the sftp:// address again, it seems to remember the auth details (even though I didn't fucking ask it to) and happily re-connects without asking for password. Either I'm an idiot that's missing something here, or it's a huge fucking security flaw.

I used it back when it was called Windows Commander and Microsoft made them change it.
Midnight Commander is nice too.
