Why not? Hundreds of thousands of software engineerings have written and contributed to open source software projects over the years; most importantly, GNU/Linux.
What have the hardware engineers been doing?
We need open source hardware. Stop allowing us to get fucked over by the likes of Intel, Nvidia and HP (printers). The community can then crowd fund fab time.
Just do what you get paid for, but for free.
How the fuck would open source hardware work?

Software is free to produce. Hardware needs materials and costs money to produce. A lot of fucking money. Money is gained through selling said products.
Since we're talking about "a lot of fucking money" here, simply selling it to autists like Stallman won't pay your bills, factories, materials, shipping, storage. So your market needs to be bigger than a niche and the people outside the niche cares about features and performance.
The problem you'll be having is that you can't compete with the competition who keeps their cards to their chest, while you are butt naked in the streets and they're reading you like an open book. The consumers outside the niche will go to those with the best performance for the best price. You can't lower the price because the factories are charging you much more compared to the competition since they are ordering millions of units at a time. Thus you're left with little market, little money to produce anything and a even harder time developing new hardware and producing them.
If you open your business model, the competition will eat you alive. You'll be playing poker with your cards shown. If you want to earn money, you need to keep your cards hidden for the competition. A shitty niche segment won't let your business thrive. You'll be dead within months.
