In theory it provides passive cooling to VRM on the back of the card provided you actually have a card that has VRM on the back. Plus it provides rigidity to the card that can prevent sag.
In reality, AESTHETIC
It can help with heat dissipation and protect it from things from above like dust or liquid cooler leakage.
