Yes?

You want CPUs to go the way of GPUs and be obsolete after a couple of years?

it can

So is my Q6600 if i'm being honest.

Pair it with an SSD and decent GPU and the shit is fine.
>>
>>56645913
A Q6600 will cripple any decent GPU in just about any modern game that isn't indie trash.

I moved from a E6700 to a i6-6700k

I considered getting a Q6600 a friend has it.

Once I got a 6700k thats the moment I realized I've been kidding myself all these years.

The Q6600 was dead once the i5-2500 released. I should have gotten a i5-2500 YEARS ago.

But no ALL I NEED IS Core 2 Duo E6700 IT JUST WERKS.
>>
>>56645947
How so? It's single core performance it's only about 20-30% below the 2500k.

and obviously no one is running a Q6600 at stock clocks. Mine is at 3.7GHz.

Sure it will be CPU bound in some games, but plenty of games still aren't all that CPU heavy and will rely primarily on the GPU.

I get 60FPS in everything I play at 1080p with a GTX 960.

>>56646092
Speaking of Eastern Europe no it's not.

Our optimal price for a PC is one minimum wage.

Around 400€

And 400€ never buys you an i3 and a good GPU.

You always need to go up to 600€ or 700€ to get a decent GPU CPU combo t hat won't be shit in 2 years time.

My friend got a job exactly to get a PC a part time one.

Worked for 2 months got a 400€ PC.

He was dumb got a Dual Core Pentium because every site out there was recommending it great performance. Now he can't play half the new games because they have a quad core minimum or and the patches suck dick.
>>
>>56646124
what the fuck do you think life is like in the US?

If you can afford to spend 400 euros in 2 months on a PC, work for 2 more months and get an 800 Euro PC instead...

I worked for 6-8 months before saving up enough to buy my last PC.

Eastern Europe is pain.
After moving to the west I have 7 times my old EE salary in disposable money for food/tech.
Yes, food is cheaper there but tech is not. In rich countries you keep much more in the gap between what you get and what you spend just for staying alive.
>>
>>56646165
What I think it's like?

Let's see food cost the same as here.
You earn 2~5 times as much.

This was a guy that lived with his parents doing a part time student job.

If it was him having to rent an apartment he'd have 50€ leftover each month. And if he didn't go out at all and didn't do anything social then yes in 1 year he'd have for a PC.

I can write you 4 full post about how poor we are and how shit it is.

But I'll tell you this. You earn more and have the cheapest hardware in the world and the best second hand in he world.

I have a 400€ wage Apartments cost 150€ Food costs 100€ Utilities 50~100€ depending on season.

At best 20~50€ savings each month.

You people can earn in a day more then we earn in a week.

And an i5-2500k USED costs 134.11 Euro

How do I think it is in America? Your poor class is wealthier then our middle class.
>>
I still use a Phenom II X4 955, still reliable. But lately some games been requiring SSE 4.1 and won't work on it.
>>
>>56646165
>life in US
>parts are cheaper, usually by 20%
>it's 5$/hour even in shit states, while even being 10$/hour in the better states
>that becomes 40$ a day minimum wage
>you get at least 800 dollarydoos a month while minimum wage in EE is between 300-400€
Oh sure, your life in US is exactly the same
Fuck, if I could live in my parents basement and leech off them, I could build a really fucking powerful PC in 2 fucking months of burger flipping
>>
>>56646124
>>>/vg/
>>
>>56646256
I make $1,600/month
$900 goes to rent I live in a cheap area for around here, most places are over $1k/month
Food is around $200 a month
Internet is $100 a month
$100 for cell bill
$100 for health insurance

The rest goes into savings. Usually $200-300 a month.

Of that, no more than half goes towards my computer fund.

So maybe $75-150 a month I save towards my computer.

The cost of living in the US is much higher.

>only 75-150 go towards computer
>only

Your only is more than we could possibly save a month and that goes for everything, you can put away like 50 euros for computer every 2 months
If the prices for parts at least wouldn't be so shit when compared to US, I wouldn't even complain, I understand the concept of the cost of living, what I don't understand is why do we get shafted on the prices
>>
>>56646322
So you're saving 3 times as much and your hardware costs about 25% less since my VAT is 25% but it actually costs more.

Cheapest i7-6700k - 416$ in my country via nabava.net
Cheapest i7-6700k - 324$ in the US via PCpartspicker.

So it's 33% more expensive and I have 55$ and you 150$ towards you PC.

Impressive tell me how it's hard in Easern Europe.

Move to the west, bros.
People are helpful and don't look like they could commit suicide at any moment. You can walk through a pedestrian crossing with closed eyes because people are not in a rush all the time and they're more relaxed.
I can spend €2500/month on anything I want.
>>
>>56646383
>what I don't understand is why do we get shafted on the prices
Because shipping costs of a fuck ton and your country is so shitty and small they are only sending a small # of products total to that country, the cost is passed on to you, but since there are so few you end up paying far more.

The US market is a guaranteed thing with long established channels and easy quick methods of import. All your shitty little eastern european countries can't possibly compete, so you get shafted paying the import fees, taxes, etc, that most US buyers ignore because newegg/amazon/whoever can bring in such large numbers of stock cheaply that the cost gets spread out over a lot more people.
>>
>>56646428
What do you mean?

>>56646433

Anyone with brain can learn that in 2 months...

Before she got an SSD in her laptop I felt a huge difference. Since she got it I can't say I feel any difference...

So I very much doubt it.

I could spend $25 a month on food if I felt like it, but I enjoy eating interesting things, and since I know how to fucking cooking and I have a decently supplied kitchen, I am going to spend a bit more money on a variety of things to make whatever the fuck I want.

I don't eat out often, I just buy nicer quality meat/fish and occasionally an imported ingredient for something i'm doing which will cost a bit extra.

I went for the sweet spot. No point saving $10-20 for 1/2 or 1/3 of the speed, similarly, no point paying double for 300/300.

And learn to cook what? I cook almost every night of the week and I make the majority of my breakfasts as well.

The main difference an SSD makes is latency, pure read/write speeds are nice too, but 300MB/s is already going to be decently quick, just the fact it's flash memory however will lower the latency by a factor of 100.

ok... like compiling big projects, like your vid encoding shit, like data analysis, like virtual machines en mass, like compatability with faster memory, like compatibility with nvme, m.2, or any modern storage

im not the one forcing you to have depreciated system anon, don't get lippy with me
>>
My i5 3470 is still kicking ass :) Probably not gonna have to upgrade for a few more years.
>>
>>56652858
>compiling big projects
>your vid encoding shit
>data analysis
Yes those might faster with newer 4c/8t CPUs, particularly if they aren't fully multithreaded. However, the improvement wouldn't be enough to justify the huge cost outlay.

>virtual machines en mass
12 virtual Westmere cores is better than 8 virtual Skylake cores for this use case. Not that any home user needs to run VMs "en mass" on a desktop system.

>compatability with faster memory
>compatibility with nvme, m.2, or any modern storage
Would be nice but not a huge improvement to everyday system responsiveness. Honestly newer SSD formats are probably the biggest persuasive factor for me to upgrade but it still isn't enough.

It's not the last CPU that matters. There's just little reason to upgrade and certainly not with Intel's current prices. Upgrading today from a Core 2 system is justifiable IMO, anything after that is questionable.

If it was that big of an improvement your workflow must've taken advantage of the newer instruction sets. Those are definitely useful in very specific situations. Either that or other things had changed (more RAM for example).

I went from a first gen i5 to a Haswell Xeon and it was great, but I think it mostly helped me in terms of other parts being better rather than the processor being better. Like for example, more RAM. I used to have 8GB and it was horrible for my purposes.

Q6600 can run't modern games.

The instruction set missing from Intel Core 2 CPUs is used in Quantum Break's renderer, and currently there are no plans of rewriting it. As the thread title basically says it all, and the discussion itself seems to be more about insulting each other, I'm locking this thread.

So long, and thanks for all the POPCorn.

Work is different to home though. At work our workstations are really getting on now and we're rolling out a new 3-year-upgrade lease deal to replace them in a month's time. We have some Xeon Phis for experimenting with the latest technology but otherwise x86 isn't fast enough for what we do anyway so anything from the last 5 years in our servers is fine for running our dev VMs

I can't run my X5650 above 4 GHz. My motherboard doesn't let me select 21x as a ratio, it throttles if I set my ratio to 22x making that setting pointless, and it doesn't like BCLK above 200 MHz either.

If you compare the i5 2500k (sandybridge) with the i5 750 (lynnfield) it's like a 40% difference with the 2500k being better. That's only a year difference though.

Comparing the i5 2500k with the i5 6600k is only 20% difference with the 6600k (skylake) being the better.
However, thats only 20% in the past 4 years.

If you OC the 2500k you're going to close that gab quite reasonably.

The people who say the 2500k is outdated are dumb shills and the people who've been holding onto Core 2 Series are just delusional.

Erm no. You must be including clock speed differences bro. IIRC Sandy Bridge had ~15% better IPC than Westmere/Nehalem on average.

Your broader point is correct though.

You're correct I did not includ Clockspeed differences. I'm going based on the overall best of that gen versus the best another one.

In reality based on my research with similar clock speed differences i5 2300 with 2.8ghz vs the i5 750 2.7ghz the difference between those is about 10%.

Although one could argue that the orientation of Sandybridge made it easier to reach higher clock speeds... However that's bullshitty sounding.

i want an 8 socket computer with 8 quad core 60mb l2 cache xeon e7 8893 v4, which cost 8000 a piece.

that would be 32 cores in 8 sockets for 64,000 dollars, plus another 12,000 for 3 terabytes of ram, another 72,000 for 4 quadro M6000 24gb and 4 tesla coprocessors. another 22,000 for raid 6 pci-e SSD's and redundant 4000 watt psu's.

and then i'd have custom made blocks for the teslas and quadros and do liquid cooling with fluorinert-446 on the entire thing, add 8,000 dollars.

put it all in a custom mahogany/glass/lead shrine that pumps sandalwood incense through the fans and laser lights through massive crystals that the computer is grounded into. like 20lb quartz crystals.

yeah baby.
