Is it a waste to keep a k processor in stock settings? How much improvement does overclocking really give you?

its not a waste, overclock it when you really need extra juice out of it.

Z75-Z77 at ebay. Ivy bridge only lasted like a year before haswell came. So a lot of them shouldn't be too terribly beat up. Just keep in mind that you can't boot from a pcie ssd without manually editing the bios, you can only use it as a normal drive otherwise.
