I mean if you watch a x720 video on a x1080 display it gets upscaled with the factor x1.5 but on a x750 display that factor is ~x1.04167.

You literally can though. I went from a Note 2 to a Note 3 and I could clearly tell there was a huge difference in text and images. Things looked clearer and less blocky. Then I went from a Note 3 to a Note 4 and I could still tell a small difference even then.

Anyway you're paying a huge fucking premium for these iPhones, they should have at least a 1440p screens especially since the screens use ancient LCD technology from the 90's.

Yes it will. If you half the resolution in the kernel (what I would do on a 1440p 5" display) the cpu will have less work to do and less ram is used. Upscaling wont hurt performance.

Only reason we keep going higher is because of normalfags wanting higher resolutions and companies wanting to Jew you out of money. Diminishing returns kicks in hard after 1080p. Hell, even for TVs it's definitely not worth it. Only advantage that 4K displays have over regular displays is HDR, and correct me if I'm wrong, but that seems like something that can easily be added to any panel.

What I think:

so the iPhones until 3GS had 320x480 (3:2 aspect ratio).
Then the iPhone 4 had 640x960 which perfectly scales at x2.
Then came the iPhone 5 which simply made the screen longer so 640x1136 (16:9 aspect ratio).
The pixel density of the iPhone 5 is 326ppi.
The screen size of the iPhone 5 is 4" and the iPhone 6 increased it to 4.7". I don't know how display manufactoring works but the iPhone 6 has the same pixel density as the iPhone 4 and 5 (326 ppi).

Now what I don't understand is why the iPhone 6/7 Plus have a different pixel density (401ppi). I guess they wanted to be able to say that it has a Full-HD screen?
