The iPhone 4 was high ppi when most android devices were about 320x480. I'm enough of an oldfag to have been on /g/ when the iPhone 4 was unveiled and the android fanboys went crazy over how "retina" screens were a meme and how they were completely useless.

Like it or not, Apple's iPhone line has been pretty much trend setter in smartphones since before the first one even came out. Android was originally supposed to be a blackberry copy which didn't even support touch screens before they apple sent google some prototype devices back in 2006 for software development and they pretty much completely re-tooled the UI.

Also, before you call me an iFag or something equally childish I'll have to point out that I've never even owned an iPhone. Since the iPhone came out I've had symbian devices, android devices, a Nokia N9, a WP device and I'm now using a Jolla phone.

The reason why Apple hasn't bothered with super high PPI is that at the normal use distance there's literally no point in any higher PPI if you've got normal human eyesight. The only real use for a PPI considerably higher than around 330 is VR.

The screen on let's say the iPhone 6/S, since there are no reliable 7 reviews yet, is good, but not outstanding. Compared to the S7, HTC10 and similar, the iPhones screen isn't really remarkable.
