Why aren't you using Windows Server 2012 as OS, /g/?

>server tier performance
>supports up to 4 TB of internal memory
>up to 64 10-core processors = 640 cores
>no bloatware
>no botnet
>stability that makes Linux users question their faith
>desktop is default interface
>boots way faster than any other windows

Ge I wonder why I have to do so much maintenance on those servers for my customers then.

Weren't they just giving it away a couple of months ago?

Is WinServer dominant in enterprise environment? I have no idea, in my country MS bribes government so the whole country basically uses WinServer (That's why i'm learning it) but i have no idea what's going on in the real world
>>
>>56593951
Stable as a rock yeah.
Currently at work trying to rdp into the server.
>Unable to connect to rdp server.
Thanks Winblows.

>>

>>
>>56594286
yes, as far as enterprise goes, MS reigns supreme, because it works.

source: a real live, working sysadmin.
>>
>>56594427
is CCNA+MCSA enough for at least shit tier sysadmin?

What skills besides that you use in everyday work?
>>
>>56594288
you need to open port 3389, shithead.

dont bitch because you dont know how to computer.
>>
>>56594436
it depends on what kind of infrastructure you're supporting, but yeah, those certs are a good start, at least as far as your resume goes.

Main skill I use outside of networking and infrastructure planning is knowing how to google shit to get the right results.
>>
>>56594450
Did you find a good way to prevent retard users from fucking up their pcs?
>>
>>56594463
yeah, restrictive GPO that disallow any changes to the system, pretty simple stuff.
>>
>>56594477
What about internet safety, how do you prevent retards from dling ransomware?
>>
>>56594488
AV on every workstation, restrictive firewall, and a DNS based content filter.

I've been here for close to 4 years now and i've never had an infection come through this setup.
>>
>>56594500
What's the biggest problem in your company when it comes to sysadmin stuff?

If you had to give an advice to upcoming sysadmin what would it be?
>>
>>56593951
>>server tier performance
On NT? Ahahahaha...
>>supports up to 4 TB of internal memory
Big deal, Linux supports 128TiB. That is, assuming 'internal memory' means ram.
>>up to 64 10-core processors = 640 cores
Linux supports 2048 cores, yes these machines exist. In 2010 at least they did, I'm just doing some superfast googling
>>no bloatware
>NT
>>no botnet
>Windows
>>stability that makes Linux users question their faith
I know some Linux servers can have years of uptime, with kernel live patching and such.
>>desktop is default interface
>Font rendering in kernel
>On every system
>What is ssh
>>boots way faster than any other windows
>Needs booting
>>
>>56593951

>set up NFS server role
>BSODs upon access every time
ok
>>
>>56594510
Biggest problem will always be users, they're always the weakest link. That and photocopiers. god i hate photocopiers.

best advice i can come up with is to keep your skillset broad. i.e. you should know how to set up and maintain servers, but you should also be able to plan and deploy a full network, or set up a VOIP system. Don't pin yourself down to one narrow field.

also, forget the /g/ fanboy mentality, there's always a best tool for the job, and it's your job to find it without letting personal bias get in the way.

Ahh, I remember the days when winfags laughed at Linux users for running a "server OS" as their operating system.

- those fucking tiles over RDP, and good luck hitting those two pixels on the taskbar to show the desktop in a windowed session

why do i hear this shit all the fucking time, what's the problem with those shitcans?
>>
>>56594576
lots of moving parts means it's the first thing to break.

also, they shit themselves as soon as it gets hot outside.
>>
>>56594582
how do you fucking learn to operate and fix photocopier machines on your own dammit, there's no way i can buy one and tinker with it in my home
>>
>>56594518
NT actually had better I/O perf than Linux because epoll is retarded.
>>
>>56594595
realistically, any real company would be leasing their machines, so you shouldn't ever have to do more than swap out toner and clear paper jams. anything more involved than that and you'd call out a service tech.
>>
>>56594564

Do you even know what GPO is?
Also, tried rightlicking the start menu button yet?
>>
>>56594564
spoken like someone who has never actually worked in an enterprise windows environment before.

These are all non issues if you know what your doing.

RDP is still the fastest remote desktop solution out of the box. only ssh shell connections are faster.
>>
>>56594439
>It doesn't work so you're retarded
Thanks for the argument m8 but we have forwarded a port to port 3389 since using standard ports is a bad idea security wise.
Everything is properly set up and it has worked yesterday and other times I tried.
Just today it just didn't want to connect for some reason that isn't logged because hey Windows just doesn't log good which prevents me from recognizing the issue to prevent or solve it in the feature.
Luckily I did get in about an hour later so that's a relieve at least.
I think issues like this are serious remarks against OP's claimed stability and is absolutely unacceptable issue for an enterprise os.
>>

If you can't get access to your server for an hour just because RDP isn't working you are retarded.
>>
>>56594564
>- no CMD anywhere by default
are you retarded or something?
I haven't done anything special to this install yet besides install AD and mess with some firewall settings

>- those fucking tiles over RDP,
is your network like 1Mbps or something?
scrolling around those tiles even at 10Mbps isn't that bad, and at full gbit it's almost like you're right at the computer.

>and good luck hitting those two pixels on the taskbar to show the desktop in a windowed session
>not hitting win + d
anyways how fucking hard is it to click an 8x38 pixel box? do you have fucking cerebral palsy or something?
>>server manager takes ages to start, eats up half the memory and you can't find anything in there anyway
it takes up a whole 53MB of ram on my system
and it takes about a second to pop up, and then like 10 seconds to load the stats things.
just don't fucking close out of it unless you are really that autistic over 53MB of ram.
>>mouse lags worse than ILO and Vmware console put together before you disable the cursor shadow
shadows are off by default for me, and I've never had any cursor lag.
Have you tried not running it on a potato?
>>fucking windows update hijacks your screen halfway through typing in a command, god forbid you press enter out of momentum

>about to become.

HP officially became HPE a while ago.
Also why do you lie, the majority of servers we run are windows on ESX. I could probably get the numbers out of ESL.
>>
>>56594815
Use the remote console on what ever lights-out management is on the server.
>>
>>56594835
>Also why do you lie
depends on which country you reside, or rather which customers do you support
I never bothered with the global overall numbers so there I may have been little wrong
>>
>>56594814
Do you not understand how managing a customer's machines work?
You don't get to pick the hardware, the connection or the policies applied to the server and you sure as fuck can't install updates or reboot whenever you feel like it.
>>
>>56594835
>. I could probably get the numbers out of ESL.

post it pls

what is esl in the first place?
>>
>>56594835
>HP officially became HPE a while ago
most of us in the team just call it hp, so it stuck with me, but i was pointing out the csc merge
>>
>>56594885
>what is esl in the first place?
a tool (database or whatever you call it) that contains every servers we support or did in the past or own for internal uses - even those pesky test ones that only one person uses once a year
>>
>>56594884
Sounds like you aren't managing much also not really the fault of the OS if you have shit hardware and connections
>>
>>56593951
i looked into it. my friend said its quite a different experience than windows. said doing simple things like installing drivers requires you to change loads of settings and enable shit. is this the case or is it as easy to setup and use as normal windows. my friend is pretty thick so im not sure
>>
>>56595079
Setup is pretty much the same as normal windows
>>
>>56594981
Sounds like you're not managing anything other than maybe a VM on your home PC.

>>56594885
>>56594910
I'm not gonna post details but in my area there are more than twice as many windows servers than linux.
>>
>>56595104
oh ok, ill try it tonight. he said he had to enable desktop experience or some shit? is that needed?
>>
>>56595273
Default option when you're installing WinServer 2012 is "Core", which means only command line. Below it it's GUI or Desktop experience, select that one
>>
>>56595273
Yeah I would enable it only takes 5 minutes just add the feature from server manager.

Desktop Experience includes:

Windows Media Player
Windows Defender
Desktop themes (Windows 2008 only)
Snipping Tool
Windows SideShow
Sync Center
Character Map
Sound Recorder
Disk Cleanup
Video for Windows (AVI support)
Support for desktop apps (Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 only)
Windows Store (Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 only)
PC settings (Windows Server 2012 R2 only)
Integrated search (Windows Server 2012 R2 only)
The ability to play a slide show on the lock screen (Windows Server 2012 R2 only)

Which the company I work for hasn't implemented on that particular server. Only thing I could have done was drive to the server and fix it there.
Luckily we have a lot of servers virtualized on linux servers with kvm so I can vnc into them if something goes wrong.
Though we've never had problems with the hosts. Makes you think what the real Enterprise grade os is doesn't it.
>>
>>56595112

most likely the misunderstanding..
anyway if you are not L1 guy, you barely do something "overall" style anyway

>>56595699
>>supports up to 12 TB of internal memory

I want to see a person, even sysadmin in small or most mid-tier firms that would find real usage for that kind of a machine (and if, most of them are used as hosts for clusters)
>>
Do people in business environment use Core or Desktop Win servers?
