I just reflashed CM13 and my usual zips, but left Google out of the equation. Is there a way to download apps from the play store without using Google? So far it's pretty nice, I have plenty of free RAM now and no lag. But I want updates for my apps (mostly the one I use for work) and I don't want to get APKs from sketchy sites.
You'll have to side load an APK for Fdroid
Or the like to be able to install apps from a store and get updates. If not, it's all manual. You can use a site like apk mirror though.

Some google apps will work without any google services framework installed (I believe maps will work).
Most of them however, requires the framework to be installed. There is a workaround called micro g which you can try using (https://microg.org/) but in my opinion it isn't really worth it.
I tried going gapps free and I found that for the most part f-droid does have acceptable replacements, with the exception of google maps but that works without any framework anyway. The issue is that once you install micro g you will be able to use a lot of other google apps, but maps will break. Hangouts also currently does not work, so going the gapps free route isn't really plausible for me unless I can convince my friends to use a different messaging service.
If you don't use hangouts though, I would recommend going gapps free and NOT installing micro g. The only google app I think anyone really needs (that doesn't have a good replacement) is maps, and that works without setting micro g up.

what's so good about it? I use a free map app (oruxmaps) with offline maps and it works great, for my needs at least. there are LOTS of map apps that use openstreetmaps, too

You can try fakegapps. I have noticed that not every app seems to be available though.
