Original goal was to create a lazily evaluated language. Purity ended up being a requirement for that to be possible.

Nowadays it's used for language research on the academic side and mostly server backends and web frontents on the business side.

I believe the popularity of web front-ends is due to GHCJS which allows you to compile nearly any Haskell code into JavaScript.

Haskell is unusable for writing large software that has to be maintained by anything other than pro Haskell cucks and even they will struggle with each other's intrincancies and notations.
