Can a faulty sd card kill an sd card reader? Both my laptop's sd slot and an usb card reader stopped working completely after I used a corrupted, unformattable sd card with them. For first few tries it worked, sd showed up in explorer, I could transfer files (though my display driver started crashing, what the fuck), but when I tried it later again, both readers seemed dead, even when using other sd card.

Im installing Kali from USB. I made an ext4 partition for it, with a 4gb swap partition along side. Grub should be installed as well, however, grub does not boot on load, it goes straight to Intel bootloader.

After selecting my HDD to boot into, it reverts back to bootloader, cant even detect windows partition. I can only use Kali Live now.

What went wrong?

If I have two different speeds of ram in the same channel, will that cause problems? Will it work like the GTX 970 VRAM where it won't use the slower DIMMs until the faster ones are full?
My situation would be 2 sticks DDR3-1600 with 2 sticks DDR3-1333 in dual channel mode.

Would I need to under/overclock to match the clocks and/or timings?
Pic unrelated

Why do so many ebay sellers give auto-feedback when payment clears? Seems like I could be a total dick and start a return and never send it (just an example) and yet they will have given me 5 stars just because my payment cleared. I guess if you sell dozens of things daily you don't want to fuck around giving out feedback, but still.
>>
>>56581527
I advise you you ditch your prejudice.
>>
>>56581478
>>56581500
I could try to overclock the 1333 DIMMs as long as I keep timings the same though, right?
I know it's a stupid idea (hence sqt) but I'm about to buy a 6 stick kit for a home server and only use 4 sticks, I figured I'll put the other two in my desktop.
I don't really care that much anyway, I'll give it a try.

This is not good advice. Most laws are still written by people who don't know anything about computers. To them, having it in your cache(from "simply" viewing pages) is the same as downloading it to jack off to.

>>56581537
The China thing? Not prejudice. It's a direct reaction to their actual behavior. If I lived in China I wouldn't want a phone made in NSAmerica, and living in the US I don't want a phone made by our primary cyber-warfare adversary.
>>
>>56581566
If your motherboard's settings flexible enough you can potentially get away with a lot. But ram is finicky. Often people will go out and buy absolutely identical sticks and have them not pair well or at all. Which is why the factory tests pairs before sending them out together. If you drop the idea of dual channel you might have more success, but there's a performance hit. Might work, might not, but you're heading into murky waters. You'd want to ask around forums for people who do this a lot.

When I'm playing one particular game, I get frequent lag spikes that make it unplayable.

Unless, as I discovered by accident, I have my torrents seeding. I've tried toggling them on and off while alt tabbing in and out of the game, torrents on = lag off, torrents off = lag on.

What the fuck is this shit?
>>
>>56581676
Well I'm getting them regardless, best case is I fuck around in my bios and get my ram to play nicely, worst case scenario is I have two sticks of DDR3-1333 left sitting in a drawer. I'm okay with either.

Trying to burn a windows 7 .iso to a flash drive using Ubuntu
The previous set of terminal commands I was given both bricked Ubuntu and, upon re-installing, just didn't work. So I'm here asking for help again.

At this point would it be best to just grab unetbootin or a similar flash drive writing program?
>>
>>56581536
A few years back ebay took away sellers' ability to give negative feedback, which is where the real power was. Withholding positive feedback doesn't really work as leverage so sellers just release the feedback preemptively in the hopes that it will encourage buyers to be more cooperative.

>>56582273
Resistance. You can easily lose 30% of the electricity coming down the cable that way. Nobody really regulates usb cable makers and the standards aren't that strict. Best way to get around it is use as short of cable as possible and/or a good brand like anker.

Haven't tried anything but the windows .iso so far. Was running it in terminal but the commands I was given literally bricked my OS for no reason and even when I retried it, my computer just booted back to Ubuntu even after "rewriting" the flash drive.

I just ran Unetbootin after reformatting my flash drive so it should be working, I hope.

Where do I start with programming? Just programming in general, I know nothing on the subject and would like to learn. What language should I start with? Are there any tutorials or websites I should follow?
>>
>>56584050

Basically you just install Linux (stuff like Ubuntu or Mint only requires you to press "OK" buttons).

Then you can learn some basics about the folder structure of Linux:

Then you can play arround with the terminal.
Some basics commands are here:

Congratulations, you are not a noob anymore.
>>
>>56584828
Start with a goal. Come up with a simple project can be solved with programming then research what you need to accomplish that.

If you came here and asked "I'd like to automate my lights from my phone" then people would give you way better advice on how to start.
>>
>>56584828
I think the best option for learning is Python. Is really easy and you can write cool programs withour having to write so much code.

I don't know anything about tutorials, I learned in uni. But try to find tutorials that teach you programming concepts, instead of how to do something specific in Python, in the end you'll learn more.
>>
>>56584828

1. Are you learning it for fun?
2. Do you want to get a job?
3. What operating system do you want to use?

Not too hard. Follow instructions, make sure you have the right parts. Actually putting it together isn't too far north of working with unusually fragile legos. You wont necessarily save much though, especially if you plan on paying for your OS. The point is usually to have better quality components and to customize it to your needs.

I noticed that the all profile pics that work have an "a" at the end of the address, like this one

I built my Vsry first system.

And now I'm trying to install Windows.
I bought a system builder key of win7 ultimate from kinguin.

I downloaded the iso it said in there, burned it into a usb with Rufus .
But when I tried installing I got pic related.

After googling for a while ,i came to the conclusion that my iso sucks .
So I got the one from that German site with salvaged digital river isos.

Checked name and checksum ,everything good .feeling optimistic cause it wasn't so in previous iso.

But when I try to install I get the very same error .

So a wireless gateway from your isp? I'm guessing cumcast? Put it in bridge mode and stick a router on it. Or better yet call up your isp and ask to exchange your wireless gateway (they may do it for free). Just call them out, sound a little outraged and annoyed and reference your competing regional isp and they'll throw the kitchen sink at you.
>>
>>56586285
Depends on the size.

If it's a small SSD place only some games on the HDD. A lot of games don't really benefit from SSD (read: games which make you wait until all other players have connected).
Place music, movies and pictures on a HDD.

Generally the most important thing to ping is physical location. Unless you have multiple routers/modems chained replacing the router won't decrease your ping all that much.

If you're cramped for space, you can relocate your desktop/my documents folders to the HDD.

>>56586308
No, ping and overall bandwidth are two different things. Ping is affected by things like whether you're using wifi, the obstacles your ISP has pushing the signal to you, and what kind of equipment you're using. Most of the time it's out of your hands, unless there's something in your home setup slowing it down. You could try bridging your gateway to an external router, and I would think about port forwarding if you're worried about game performance.

Completely theoretical question from someone not versed in computing whatsoever: processing power of any computer is limited in speed due to constantly checking for 1 and 0 on the most basic level. Quantum processing would speed things up since its processing could consider 1 and 0 simultaneously.
Now, what I would like to ask is - why isn't it possible to couple 2 regular processors in a way that they do the exact opposite calculations simultaneously, thus working like a poor man's quantum computer?

The Kali docs didn't help me. I got it to work though. Before doing anything, shrink the "partition" down to ~3GB, leaving the rest of the USB unallocated. Install Kali on that. Then boot Kali up live. Using gparted, create new partition on all unallocated space with the label "persistence" (w/o quotes) and EXT4 format. Open a terminal and execute the following commands, assuming "/dev/sdb3" is the partition you just created:

mkdir -p /mnt/my_usb
mount /dev/sdb3 /mnt/my_usb
echo "/ union" > /mnt/my_usb/persistence.conf
umount /dev/sdb3

Reboot and choose Kali persistence. At least, that worked for me.

Now on to my own stupid question. I originally was running Kali off of an SD card on a second-hand potato laptop, and it was slow as balls. I put a little bit of money into a less-shitty machine and a giant low-profile USB3 drive, and I re-downloaded a kali iso and installed it there. I know Kali is a rolling distro, and I'm guessing in the two-month period since I installed it on the SD card an update hit.

I don't know if it was an update or me using a different machine, but a couple of (admittedly minor) things are now broken and bugging the hell out of me. For starters, I can't change the volume; the applets on the panel don't do anything, and neither do the keyboard commands (the applet for screen brightness also does nothing, but at least the keyboard commands for that work). Every solution I've found boils down to "add/change the applet retard," which I'm also having trouble with, as alt+right-click, super+alt+right-click, etc.etc. do nothing.

alsamixer works, but I'd much rather have a standard applet or, better yet, use my keyboard to change the volume.

>tl;dr I can't (any combination of keys)+right-click on the panel to add/remove items, some of the items are borked, and I can't change the volume at all unless I use alsamixer. Is this due to the machine I'm using (2011 Dell) or the Kali update? Any solutions?

If you've got a big house, a lot of up and down, or thick walls, you're going to have a hard time with wifi in general. 5ghz suffers from less active interference, but it doesn't go as far and obstacles stop it easier. Your best bet is ethernet, it's pretty cheap, and you could stick another router as an AP at the end. You could also try a powerline solution, but your results will depend on how good your home's wiring is.

>>56587787
Avira has solid detection rates and low system impact except when scanning. Avast is also light weight, has slightly lower detection rates but also slighly less false positives. Malwarebytes makes a good secondary AV, but it has to be opened and run manually.

Bitdefender free is sort of the opposite of Malwarebytes. It has constant realtime protection, updates automatically and runs scans automatically, but wont scan manually. It's all about "set it and forget it". If you're cool with that it's super light weight with great detection rates. They also offer a seperate browser security addon called TrafficLight, which is useful because some attacks have to be caught at the browser level.

>>
>>56587014
This question doesn't make much sense, you're reducing two really complex things and then giving a really superficial answer

The underlying logic of a processor runs on binary but that is abstracted through billions of transistors in logic gates to put out incredibly complex outputs. Coupling something to do the opposite is literally meaningless as one output is just one of a practically infinite array of outputs in a solution space

Also quantum computers don't consider 1 and 0 the same like that, it's more that an output of quibits necessarily contains the desired solution within some permutation of themselves, and so problems are reduced as the total number of calculations can be reduced and outputs checked

Query 1.
>Background:
So I just forwarded port for my torrent client.

>Problem:
By opening a port, my system may be vulnerable to bots

>Goal:
I need to define a user (torusr) that has access to only one directory (and its subdirectories). How do I do that?

Query 2.
>Background:
My local IP of my home "server" keeps changing (between 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.7)

>Problem:
1. Random changes like this require me to re-configure port-forwarding on my router
2. It also requires me to re-configure my SFTP server (NFS)

>Goal:
I want my local IP to remain the same for good

Query 3.

Browsing files are horribly slow. Even HPN-SSH is not a help

>Goal
Tweak tips? Is it possible to pass "-C" flag (compression) from the file manager?

whats bottle-necking my PC the most?

which do you think is the biggest upgrade:

-a 2nd gtx 760 and PSU
-intel motherboard and i5 (probably go to mini itx)
-RAM

I'm on my computer quite a bit and would like to be able to run dark souls 3 on max settings in 1080p or very high in 1440p. Currently I get quite a bit of frame rate drop and view distance is low and jagged. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Ok, so I want to start making music , but i am extremely broke .. I was thinking about using an analog media to record and master my audio, so it can be properly scaled to other media formats in the future.
I also think it adds a nice quality to the sound.
my questions are:

can I effectively use cassettes to record, and master audio?

Do they have detuning problems?

How long can they be stored / used before they wear?

What are some good modern brands?

What are the negatives of this format, what would you recommend?

And also, why do companies sell shit like that that is so fucking awful even when using it for just the first time?

When you're normalizing data in a database, how are you supposed to handle data that is duplicated but only once or twice?

Like, if you made a Pokemon database and each monster needs two and only two types (and the position is important), and each monster has two egg group, do you just create 4 fields in a "Pokemon" dataset linked to a Types and Egg Groups table, or do you create a junction table for Types that connects to both the Pokemon and Types tables (and just ignore it if there are 3 or more types for a single monster)?

Does different charging amperages affect a battery in the long run?

Ex- I have an old phone that used a 1.0a charger, but my wife's phone charger is a 2.2a charger, and charges in (obviously) half the time. If I switch these every now and then, will it fuck up the battery in the long run, or is this like a 3-4 year deal where by then I've already got a new phone?

Why does google want my phone number and is locking me out of my throwaway gmail until I give them one?
It says it needs verification that I'm not a robutt, so I click the question ones and it asks me the password, month it was created (what?), and another email which it can send a code to. I do this three times and it still says something is unusual about the way you're logging in, so we won't let you lol.
If trying to log in from a different IP is unusual then how would I log in if I had moved?

TL;DR, why is google being dumb?

Generally the faster you charge a battery the more stress it puts on it, what effect it will have on your battery depends on a lot of variables - it may not make a significant difference either way.
>>
>>56590074
It does have some impact, but not very much. They're designed to charge effectively up to their maximum without undue damage. All portable batteries age eventually. I wouldn't spend time worrying about it, especially at 2.4a and below.

>>
>>56590484
why do you think the only two options are 0% privacy or 100%?
It's just unrealistic to expect anyone to survive in today's society without a cell phone, and I see nothing wrong with trying to limit the information it sends out about you.
Of course there are some things you can't control, like the location being broadcasted to cell towers, but there is more information you can prevent from being leaked.
>>
>>56590488
You have to be the judge of that. Everybody's body is different. There are things in there that can potentially give you energy/wake you up. The conventional logic is to err on the side of morning, but it wont kill ya either way.

If you cannot have a 100% privacy option then you have 0% privacy.
Why would i have to "limit" what is being sent out? I should be able to tell it what should be able to send out.
It should not be a BLACKLIST operation, but a WHITELIST operation.
>>
>>56590592
This isn't about what SHOULD happen, but about what is physically possible. Even with a phone broadcasting my location I can prevent third party companies from data mining my information. Obviously the information that would have gone to those companies would also have been accessible by the government, so by preventing third parties from receiving data about myself I am also limiting how much information is available to the government.
Like I've mentioned before, there really isn't anything you can do about the location issue short of getting rid of any kind of telecommunications device, which is unrealistic.
>>
>>56590641
