Blender was also hog shit for a long while too, nowadays it's at least usable, but if you value your time then do learn Max/Maya or literally anything else that other people use in real projects, on the off-chance your work might actually be useful to someone.

Openshot's pretty hot. Especially the new beta version. Don't kid yourself, it's no Premier, Vegas, or Aftereffects, but for zero money down you can do far worse.

If you don't mind faffing about with a compatibility layer, smoke, Autodesk's video editor for Mac, runs great through Darling. Haven't used it to any great extent, so I can't vouch for it being the best, but it's definately a valid option.
