IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Ok so I read the guide but I'm still not sure.

I bought a 650€ Asus laptop rive years ago. Decent CPU and GPU.
Is there something in that budget that can run some averge games, and display HD ?

Also I could really use a small, cheap laptop for classes that can run Elementary or even Mint
>>
>>56561880
either you turbo overpayed for your t420, or you bought a damn cheap hybrid thingy
>>56561940
x220 would be ideal for a small laptop
>>
>>56561953
>x220
Don't even need that much power tbqh
>>
>>56559161
>What is prime?
PRIME is a Linux way for GPUs to send display buffers to each other for displaying. In this case using an output from iGPU to display stuff rendered on eGPU. Pretty much like Optimus on Windows except you cannot turn off the eGPU.

My finding was that using PRIME with an eGPU causes massive tearing and lowers the performance so I haven't been using it. Next Xorg release should have fixes for Nvidia PRIME synchronization though which should reduce tearing.

>Are the drivers modded?
The drivers are from ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa to get the up-to-date official drivers instead of the stable drivers from Ubuntu repository. No driver modifications involved.

>eGPU boot is weird
I reckon it's because the BIOS notices unexpected display adapter and has to do some setup. It only happens when a display adapter is added or removed between boots so if I have eGPU attached for multiple boots it happens only on the first one. I never remove the battery and always am plugged to wall when using eGPU.

so put it in power saving mode and get longer than 2 hours of battery life

Today, i brought the x200 to work.

Weird looks, "anon wtf is this lol???" comments, and people telling me that I should get a new laptop. How little they know about comfyness.

I have a doubt. I have it charging now. Does the current keep on passing through the battery when full? or does it redirect through another circuit?

I remember old laptop screwing up the battery if you had them always connected, but I don't know how updated the power design is on this thing.
>>
>>56562575
>I remember old laptop screwing up the battery if you had them always connected, but I don't know how updated the power design is on this thing.
that hasn't been an issue for a long time.
>Does the current keep on passing through the battery when full? or does it redirect through another circuit?
the battery is used as a UPS when it's plugged in. It's also used when you draw more power than the power adapter can handle.
so basically yes it goes through the battery, but the battery is constantly going between 95 and 100% to prevent damage or anything
>>56562587
seems alright, but for that price I'd wait a little bit longer for the kabby lake/gtx 10 series laptops to come out.

I want to know if the cpu is good, i wanna play arma 3 on it and i know itll be a bitch to run. is 2.6hz good enough?
>>
>>56562636
that's inside the battery
what you are talking about is to the computer itself, so really it's more like 90%-100%
>>56562639
arma 3 should run fine I think
you are mostly limited by the server you play on, and not really the computer you play on.
like with my desktop I saw literally no performance difference going from a 4670k + a 7970 to a 4790k and a 970.

btw sqt probably would have been a better place to post the original post, but things tend to get ignored there
>>
>>56562615
>>56562636
>constantly going between 95 and 100%

B-but that's bad isn't it? It wears down the charge capacity.
>>
>>56562687
do you know anything about overclocking, ive never done it but how far could i overclock 2.6hz before it gets too hot(over 65cel is too hot for me)
>>
>>56562689
no, it's best for it
well besides taking it out at about 60% charge and only putting it in when you need it.
but that would make your system run at 800mhz when plugged in, you run the risk of it powering off randomly, and it just being damn inconvenient for the battery only lasting 5% longer after a year or two.
>>56562722
it's an hq so you can't overclock it.
if the bios allows you (which it probably won't) you could overclock it to it's max all core turbo boost (general max turbo -0.2ghz).
But the only advantage would be slightly cooler temps.
also this is a laptop, expect 80c under full load at minimum.
and with turbo boost expect like 95-104c for 20 minutes, then down to 95 or lower
and yes, running that hot for that amount of time is perfectly safe, and your cpu will most likely outlive the first component to die on that computer
>>
>>56562768
>expect 80c under full load at minimum
are you saying that if i play arma in ultra, my computer will melt? So itll basically last a year?
>>
>>56562815
80c won't make your computer melt
105c is technically overheating, but it can still function at that temp.
you'd need to be running at like at least 200c for something to actually melt
and considering that pretty much every laptop runs at atleast 80c under load just fine I think yours will be fine
>>
>>56562768
>running that hot for that amount of time is perfectly safe
Not him but where to find info about this?

>>
>>56562829
wtf? my current notebook (dv6) runs around 70 max load, and i havent dusted it in months. This cant be, gaming laptops usually are this hot?
>>
>>56562834
personal experience
the fact that most laptops survive just fine
google
putting 2 + 3 and getting 5 (assuming that 2 is all laptops run at like 80+c under load, and 3 being that most laptops survive for 3+ years unless you break it somewhere else)
>>56562848
have you run prime 95 for longer than 10 minutes?
and are you stress testing the gpu at all?
also if your laptop doesn't support turbo boost it will run a lot cooler than one that doesn't (since going from say 2.6ghz uses ~18 watts, and 3.4ghz uses ~45 watts on my 3720qm)

One of the cores became faulty after a few years and can't use it anymore.
>>
>>56562914
>if its idle or running just the browser it will be around 60c right?
sounds about right for most laptops
especially if you have a quadcore in a laptop that turns off the fans at low temps
>And are gaming laptops quiet when running big games, like if i ran arma it wouldnt be louder than a highway in the distance?
no laptops are quiet under full load
gaming laptops tend to be louder under full load, but their fans tend to be a lot less annoying since they are bigger and less whiney
>>56562927

huh, you actually managed to kill just one core, and have the rest of the laptop still fully functioning?
Impressive, I've never seen that before.
but yeah HP (heating problems) are known for running a wee bit too hot under load.
pretty much every manufacturer designs proper laptops though
>>
>>56562994
>you actually managed to kill just one core
Apparently I started to have random BSoD, and then some suggested to use linux which also gave kernel panic.
But nobody seems to know what causing it.
Updated BIOS/Formatted/MWB but nothing seemed to help.
I noticed if I set the CPU power from the Power management I get none to very few BSoD.
While many suggested that it a lot HDD was dying, I realized it was the CPU so I ran CPU benchmarks but everything seemed normal.
Until I run S+M benchmark and it detected that my CPU 0 was faulty.
So I manged to use it for a few months by disabling that core.
Until it couldn't boot anymore.
Still like to fix it, but some "shaddy computer repair guy" asks for 300$ to fix it, which I doubt he can since he though lubuntu was infected windows install.

Never heard of that. I've been always told to not putting out until full charge.

Should my X201 with an i5-540M be struggling to emulate gba games? I get that some N64 games are choppy, but I've tried 3 different linux gba emulators and two google chrome emulator extension things and they all lag with choppy sound. I'm tempted to try a windows emulator through Wine, or even use a spare hard drive and install windows 7 or something and try a windows emulator natively

It must be able to emulate gba games properly, surely, so where am I going wrong?

after being on /g/ since 2013, i've learned its not worth it to fall for the OS memes

there is no reason whatsoever to use anything besides Ubuntu, everything else is just difficult for the sake of being difficult. desu, it isn't even that its difficult, but you have to do things yourself. what is the point of installing your gpu drivers and editing the xconf manually when ubuntu just works.

anyways, my experiences with things like Lubuntu and other derivatives of Ubuntu have had ridiculously fucking insane issues that the parent distro did not.

just install ubuntu, and install a lighter unity theme if you need to.
if that doesn't work, get lubuntu/xubuntu

If I were to spend it on keyboard or on SSD for a t430, there's also Dell e6430 for 230$.
It has true quad core i7-3470qm, 8 gigs of ram, 256 SSD, 1600x900 screen and quadro 5200. Would that be a better choice than HP with upgraded keyboard or T430 with SSD?

yes, the 2nd gen i5 performs well, but the integrated intel hd 4000 in the 3rd gen was a huge improvement over the hd 3000 found in the 2nd gen

you won't regret it, i promise. the chiclet keys themselves aren't even that bad in the t430/x230 either, its the layout that sucks.

but if the typing experience is more important to you, get the t420/x220

Isopropyl alcohol, Lots of it.
And a brush(Not toothbrush) with some canned air.

Give the keyboard a good cleaning since you will be using it.
Also the filters since they are probably dusty.
And repaste it if you want.
>>
>>56573293
I usually rub some hand sanitizer on my hands, then rub down the keyboard/trackpad/palmrest area

it's like 30 dollars more to get one nowadays, and you get used to the keyboard layout fast.

What should I use, W7 or W8.1?
I heard W8.1 is supposed to be lightier than W7, and that it can be used like W7 (start menu and such).
Also that W8.1 is supposed to have better performance overall, in games mostly.
Can you please help me?

Third party batteries don't work on Ivy Bridge thinkpads and later,,, so you should be good.

>>56564948
I recommend an 8470p, because the ProBook is essentially an L Series thinkpad with maybe a better GPU.

>>56565543
If I really wanted it, I'd find out what that processor is worth and then just add $50 and offer that to the seller.
Its hard to say because you may be able to get a working W520, W530, 8570p, for under $300.
A bit anecdotal because I'm going off what I got, but eh, could always get a mint 8760w from Arrow Direct for $270.

>>56565885
Thumbs up buddy! Good job.

>>56569514
Eh... I feel you are overspending but I personally would buy the E7470 for better battery life.
The E7450 may have a better GPU but given how light it is, I doubt that thing will have a good heatsink for proper graphical work.

Got an offer on a X220...
i5 2520m
4 gb ram
500 gb hdd

Seller says battery ~2hrs so need to get a new one + upgrade RAM + get an SSD which would bump price after upgrading it to a total of around $330 // €295.

T560 $783

8GB DDR3

seems like they look identical except for the frame. btw i want to get a nice laptop and dont have time to fiddle with it. is it alright to pay this amount or i am getting ripped of?
>>
>>56581725
P50s is a workstation so its probably has significantly worse battery life (CPU that draws more power), its generally suited only for occasional moving, its designed to sit in one place.

T460 is a laptop with normal portability.

i dont know.
you should just go with what you like more. p50s is slightly sturdier and noticeably heavier, probably has better gpu (you havent listed them). t560 is more or less normal universal laptop.

I'd accept the key being removed of its original print and then maybe some laser printing, but it's just a round sticker slapped on top, it's gonna peel off, and the key won't have a flat surface anymore

>>
>>56583178
kinda breaks my immersion. but ill live with it.

anyway thanks for replying to my shitposts countless times, im the fag from PL who sold his E540 to buy an X230. its been a bumpy road with problems from both DHL and seller like laptop arriving in shit condition (screen white spots, top part of screen cover loose), they actually replaced it all (very good condition top cover, much better palmrest upgraded to one with fingerprint reader and brand new IPS screen) now the only thing left is the adapter which doesnt seem to work, i plug it in and nothing happens, cant start it without battery as well, seller sent me a working one ill get it tomorrow. hopefully its not something like fucked motherboard or the power connector.

used it a little today since my new genuine battery had something like 20% (it lasts for fucking two hours, woah, my E540 did two hours on full charge), it feels real nice.

E540 just cant compare quality wise. Woah, my mind is blown, really made me think etc.
So far im happy with it, hopefully it wont give me problems later on.

I only have two questions now:
1. should the fingerprint reader blink when laptop is inactive? its not hibernated, turned cold off but it blinks with green led from time to time
2. how is the Gobi 3k? should i get some SIM card with low transfer limit for when i have no wifi

And thanks again of course, this general is really helpful and non-cancer.

Most essential tweak for a Thinkpad running Windows is to install Linux.

To try and answer your qustion sadly I doubt there is much you can do other than what is listed in Thinkvantage and Windows power manager... Windows somewhat limited that way but luckily it also works kindda well.

Outlet p50 arrived last week, $1300 for 4x more RAM than advertised and the pleasant surprise of a backlit keyboard that I will never use.
I was very apprehensive/pessimistic regarding Windows 10, and within 10 minutes my fears were...solidified. I had hoped that I could downgrade to Windows 7 (OS I've been running since the day it replaced Vista) if I was dissatisfied, and I haven't found any ezmode way to procure a copy through the downgrade rights (from microsoft website)
>If you acquired a device from a manufacturer or installer with a Professional version of Windows preinstalled on it, you may use either a Windows 8.1 Pro or Windows 7 Professional version
Do I need to outright buy a new copy of 7 in order to run it on my new fapmachine? If so I'll just continue fucking with programs like Classic Shell until I get something I can live with.
On another note, I'm having a problem where occasionally the (wireless) network will just drop out. It's not an issue on the router's end, my phone continues to play spotify seamlessly/run games that require constant connectivity. But if I just turn the wifi off and then on on the thinkpad, it resumes like it was just taking a nap like a lazy mexican. I've already went into device manager and disabled the power option that allows the pc to put the network adapter to sleep, but the problem still pops up from time to time. Halp?
