PLEASE HELP ANONS, I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO GO INTO A PC REPAIR SHOP~

Had to replace my dying/ dead PSU, and now whenever I turn on my PC from being off, or resume it from sleeping, it sort of "revs up". This is what it'll do:
>Begins to start up for a few seconds
>Stops abruptly, stays off for a second or 2
>Repeat anywhere from 2-15 times until it finally turns on

Going to run several VM, game, office work, media server. I already have several drives, so that's why I only have 1 hdd. I am kindof unsure about the fans. >>

>>56553112
Dumb question, but what does resetting the BIOS do? Does that restore my PC or any shit like that?
>>
>>56553199
It just resets the settings your BIOS is using. It doesn't affect your data.
>>
>>56553199
Resetting the BIOS will reset your CPU and motherboard settings. Overclocks, time and date, power-saving options, memory timings, it will reset it to factory settings.
BIOS options can be changed from inside the OS, but it is not recommended.

>>56553229

I currently have a R9 380, which does really well for me at 1080p. I'm considering buying a 1440p monitor and I'm wondering if my GPU will do okay. I'm well aware that I won't be playing AAA games at native resolution but I don't care about that. Will I be able to play games like EU IV and Civ V at 1440p with the 380? Or should I consider upgrading?

CPU: main math dude. He does all the hard work processing numbers. If you game, he does the physics too.
GPU: renders textures, does antialiasing, and pretty much everything in the gaming world. Not needed for a work or school computer.
RAM: kind of like short term memory. It keeps everything that's currently running going, and keeps a cache of information when you close out a program. The more, the better.
Motherboard: backbone of the PC. Keeps everything connected to each other.
PSU: Supplies energy to all parts of a PC.
Use the links that op posted and look it up on Google.

check your case specs to see how many fans it supports, how many comes with it and what sizes.
then you can check a fan comparison test to see which ones move the most air (CFM) while being the most silen (dB)

Hello.
I have currently 2 GPUs to my disposal to choose from: Radeon RX 470 4GB

Both are around the same price. I never had a AMD before and im unsure but i only have this two options in my country for cheap.

Aren't Gigabyte mostly good choices?
>>
>>56555674
yes but all brands have cheaper versions. if you're not going to overclock it makes it much easier as you dont have to get something that is more stable when doing that.

i you wont OC just pick something in your price range and google a review from a hardware site to see if they find any blatant issues with that model.
>>
>>56555364
I've picked Thermaltake v21, not corsair 200R, but whatever. Upgradeability is one of the reasons I would rather go for micro atx, cheapest itx mobo is $20 more expensive, max RAM is only 32GB and have only one pci-e, so I can't even put in wifi card in it.

Those highlighted components usually aren't important to the people who aren't going to overclock their CPU. For normies and first-time builders, the stuff on the rear I/O port, the number of SATA ports, and how many useable PCIe slots it has is more important than the number of redundant power phases it has.
Most normies only have one or two drives in their entire build, only use one graphics card (usually a single-slot cheapo sub $150 one), and occassionally might need a single PCIe 1x slot for Wi-Fi/second NIC, additional USB ports, sound card, or some adapter.
That means that a Micro-ATX motherboard is more than enough for them, as well as a H81/H110/A68M chipset motherboard.

I bought an used PSU for real cheap to use on my newest build. The low price was because it's semi-modular and it doesn't include the PCI Express cables, so I thought I could just order the damn cables online and problem solved.

However, reading elsewhere, it seems that PSU manufacturers do not have a standard for pinouts, so buying a cable that does not match the specified PSU could end up shorting out the components.

HOWEVER, it seems that, while SATAs are at the manufacturers' arbitrary pinouts, PCIe is, indeed, standarized across the board (+12V for pins 1-3, grounds for pins 4-6).

So, can I buy the damn cable and plug the GPU without frying it in the process?

(I know I can take the cable and wire the pinouts myself, but that's too much of a hassle. Also, I don't have a multimeter).

>>
>>56555941
>So, can I buy the damn cable and plug the GPU without frying it in the process?
Just because one end of a cable is standardized doesn't mean that the other end will be. I think Raidmax had a semi-modular PSU that had a different pin-out for both ends of their PCIe connectors, leading to some fantastic fireworks when someone jammed the wrong end of the connector to their graphics card..
>>
>>56555941
i would go to a website that sells case mods or other custom pc parts and ask them to make you some for your specific PSU so you know it's correct.

alternatively contact the seller you got it from and ask if he still has them cus they would probably be useless for him if he bought a new PSU.
>>
>>56556058
or even try contacting the manufacturer and ask if they have spare cables.

or buy someone's old cables from ebay
>>
>>56556012
>>56556058
So, what gives, then? Do I buy the cables, take the PSU to a repair shop and ask them to customize them so I don't fry the graphics card?

That sounds like a plan.
>>
>>56556226
You could try Googling the PSU and figuring out which company made it. Most PSU manufacturers (usually not the company whose name is emblazoned on the PSU) have habits like how they do pin-outs on all their connectors. You could then save yourself some coin (and maybe even your PSU) by redoing the wiring yourself.

>>56559305
I suggest something other than the Silverstone SFX PSU's. They have a really annoying sound profile.

If your system is REALLY cool then it's silent because the fan is off.

If your system is gaming then it's pretty fucking quiet because the fans at that speed is okay.

But the vast majority of time, your system will be at a temperature that tries to make your PSU fan spin at the lowest speeds possible, which is completely unstable, causing a whirring or clicking sound constantly.

You CANNOT alter this. Even replacing the fan is unnecessarily difficult because they put some kind of epoxy over the connectors.

It's really fucking dumb that I would prefer my system to run a bit hotter at idle/low loads just so my PSU fans spin up a bit to a stable voltage so the sound doesn't drive me apeshit.

I may give the Corsair SFX PSU's a shot, but it feels pretty shitty to spend that much on a PSU, only to buy another, equally expensive one, in a system that is already fairly pricey.

>>56559542
Depends, what kind of build are you doing? As long as you aren't clumsy as fuck with a screwdriver and start scraping off surface mount components you'll be fine. Just don't use too much force.
>>
>>56559542
Very easy if you don't do your own research beforehand.
For instance, buying a CPU and mobo with different sockets, then forcing the processor in breaking either or both.
>>
>>56552881

Yes, Corsair's new SF line is what I have been looking into. (I'm the guy with the Silverstone SX500-LG.)

I haven't gotten around to replacing it.

Please let us know how it works out. Hopefully I'll be around to read it.

In addition to not wanting to spend another hundred buckeroos, re-wiring an ITX case, even the NCase M1, is not a pleasant experience. You basically have to take apart the whole build to do it right in an M1, including taking off the CPU heatsink in my case (I have a beQuiet Dark Rock TF) AND the mobo.

Basically the PSU goes in first, then the mobo on top (there is a tab to secure the PSU mount which is covered by the mobo), then connect various cables to the mobo (SATA, USB3 header, power), then attach heatsink (there is an access hole in the back to let you secure the heatsink screws). Then finish connecting everything else. Make sure you plan for dressing the cables as you do each step.
>>
>>56559542
If you do your part research, it's pretty easy. Just don't do ITX as many things can go very wrong. A mid-tower ATX will by far be the easiest and most versatile and likely the cheapest.
>>
>>56559688
Huh I didn't even mention I was planning to make my own cables, but yea I am in the future. For now I got a LAN event at the end of the month so I'm just using the provided cables initially.

The gamble is, figure the power, monitor, etc, could also crap out at any time. It's a 4 year old HP craptop.

At 300$, I think I could get a good mobo with a newer socket. Get a lowest end CPU for the new socket, then years later replace it with the high-end CPU for that socket at end-of-life. Pop in new ram, get a bigger PSU.

The most advanced thing I play now is Tabletop Simulator... though it's not very optimized.

Checks out! Free case! Perfect. LGA 1151 was the "future upgrade" socket I was considering for a 6600k later on or something

The REAL problem though is that even with a hacked BIOS, I still can't get my HP Craptop to change the default video adapter to bypass the faulty one.

Otherwise I wouldn't need a new computer. Apparently this is an issue with their multi-GPU laptops.

AMD doesn't change sockets as often. Buying into a budget Zen might be a better option if you're really investing into the motherboard for a future upgrade.

Officially? No - AMD's roadmap always had it planned for 2017. There is/was a rumour about limited availability late this year but given the official annoucement of AM4 my opinion is the rumour was meant to be for motherboards (which have been made available to OEM's).

It works, and is typically appropriately quiet and effective at cooling the CPU, though sometimes intel jews out and includes one that is solid aluminum instead of the copper core version.
Aftermarket is only for looks, super noise conscious people, and overclockers.
>>
>>56561588
I think people here have said the Z170 is for overclocking and would not be worth the extra cost unless you have a cpu you can overclock (intel CPUs ending with 'K'). The H170 or B150 (if you are on a budget) would be better, but you should confirm it with others because I am not an expert.

Also, do you really need 16GB of RAM? A lot of people say 8GB is sufficient. But once again, I'm not an expert.

What will you be using the pc for? Mostly gaming?

Firstly, I would just like to state this is my opinion, because I am no expert. You should confirm this info with other people.

Your graphics card is a bit old and doesn't need such an expensive cpu. The graphics card would be the bottleneck with an i5 6400. But if you use your computer a lot for other non-gaming stuff, that is a different story.

If it's for gaming, the cheaper i3 6100 would easily be enough for a gtx 560Ti (and buy the cheapest B150 motherboard, or even a H110). Heck, even the G4400 might go with it a 560 (but it's not good for future-proofing, and your pc might be a bit sluggish with general computer usage). But you should confirm this with other people first, because I am no expert. But I've seen builds with a G4400 and a gtx 950 together. If that's too cheap, you can go a i3 6100 with a 950, or even with a 960. So i3 is certainly enough for a 560 Ti. When the 1050 comes out, I bet some people will pair it with the i3, and some have even put the i3 with a 1060 (but I think the i5 might be better for the 1060).

Hope someone else can weigh in on my opinion, cos I'm still a bit new to all this myself.
>>
>>56561801
Dont buy 4k, you cant get a playable framerate on those. 1440 is fine but requires a beefier gpu.
>>
>>56561801
IPS:
better colors, better viewing angles, but more expensive, higher response time and can have backlight bleed
TN:
cheap, low response time but colors are meh and viewing angles can be shit

1440p seems to be a sweet spot. 1080 is pleb tier and to run 4K at good FPS you need some beefy hardware. Also: scalling issues.

I don't think high refresh rate is useful outside gaming, except maybe for watching 3D movies.

Free/G-Sync? Go for it if you can afford it

Your PSU and RAM are rubbing me the wrong way, what's the 650w for? And gold certified? The premium you pay for gold over bronze is rarely worth it. 16gb RAM is a little much, try getting a lower clocked 8gb for less. Any money you save goes towards your CPU, which will be a 6600k. Goes really well with your MOBO and CPUs last quite long so it's worth the investment.

You'll obviously replace your 560ti with another card somewhere down the line, because you'll definitely be GPU bottlenecked in nearly all games (?)
I presume you're building your PC for gaming because you didn't opt for a powerful CPU initially.

>>
>>56562211
Yes, 2x4GB of RAM you can do dual channel mode, though it's only a slight improvement. But it is a different story if you plan to later upgrade to 16GB and you only have 2 RAM slots. (but I have no idea when anyone would need that much RAM).

Your CPU would be plenty powerful enough for a 950 or 460, and then some. DOTA 2 wouldn't even need an i5 -i3 would be enough. Heck you could play DOTA 2 on the integrated graphics with the i3. But GTA V is a much more demanding game. You can play it on an i3 with a good enough graphics card, though the i5 would be more suitable. But if you're only getting a 950 or 460, many people are building those cards with i3s. Meh, I have no idea. I've exhausted my knowledge.

>>56562298

r8 please lads, remember it's difficult finding cheap parts Kiwiland.

Specifications are for something relatively portable (hence the MicroATX case) and with a decent CPU, I tend to play vidya such as Arma, Total War and Paradox grand strat games, which I've heard require a relatively strong CPU. I chose that monitor for FreeSync (tearing annoys the fuck outta me) which is why a DisplayPort cable is also in there, the monitor doesn't seem to come with one.

>Depending on your graphics card, even the i3-6100 might prove more than enough for your gaming needs—it's almost certainly capable of maxing out a GTX 960 / R9 380 or lower graphics card in most games. We personally tend to go with around a 2:1 ratio on cost of GPU vs. CPU, though, meaning a GTX 1060 or RX 480 would be a great pairing for a modest gaming solution.

That wont be in the manufacturer. 40 Yuropoors have to come from somewhere, the Gigabyte one will probably be more minimalist, not offer you a factory OC, cheaper fans etc.

but what's the difference? The other is Windforce and other is Gaming, is this just to grab cash from ''muh gaming'' kids?
>>
>>56563350
Partially, you can see the Gaming version has 3 display ports. Largely unnecessary and that's probably not where the difference in price comes from.

Gaming version is a tiny bit more overclocked, but I bet the big difference will be cooling solution. Both passive cooling and active cooling (fans) will probably be of lesser quality, and thus run louder and hotter.

Of course I don't have a clue because I've never compared the two, I'm just speculating.

I do know that the Gaming X version here >>56563297 runs about 5 degrees cooler, looks better (subjectively) and has fans that are way less loud than the ones on the minimalist version. If you want to know what the difference between the two Gigabytes are, try looking up some reviews.

I wish I knew more about monitors, can't really make a judgement call there. It does only support 1080p/144FPS max. Just so you're aware of that since you weren't sure what your preferred resolution/FPS was.

If you are planning to game only at 1080p/60FPS then you don't need an i7 at all. A 6600k with a cheaper CPU cooler (like the ever popular 212 Evo) should do just fine. You could also opt for a cheaper MOBO, something like the Asus Z170P, and shave off another $30 or so.

Oh, yeah, and you don't need gold certified PSU. Bronze is okay.

Is there a big difference between motherboard manufacturers ? Can't choose between ASRock, Gigabyte and MSI for H170 mATX board, they all seem pretty much the same

>mfw I just bought a g4400

no regrets! it's like half the price of an i3, shouldn't need to upgrade for a while

That's it my friend. Buy what your budget suits and fuck the haters. Easily paired with a gtx 950 to bring many hours of fun for a low price. Not every program or game requires a supercomputer, and you can spend what you saved on strippers and booze (or whatever you want).

As long as they are not broken, they will all pretty much do the same thing. It used to be that certain brands were less likely to break down or wear out (like Asus was always known for quality), but I think nowdays there is little difference.

CPU, purely for gaming, won't be overclocked, 1151 socket, 4 cores
Which to chose, would hyperthreading make any difference or is going for i5 over i7 a smarter choice considering it saves like 100$

>you usually won’t gain much by choosing a Core i7 chip over a Core i5, as Hyper-Threading makes little difference in most games. Even complicated titles such as Battlefield 4 only really take advantage of four cores, so the extra four virtual cores Hyper-Threading provides won’t be much use. There are exceptions, though. The latest Total War games appear to benefit from a Core i7’s power due to the sheer number of units interacting with each other on the battlefield.

any reason why you have a mini itx board in a mid tower case?
>>
>>56562126
Thanks for the advice, the 16gb is a mistake and i did change out the cpu with the 6600k. Also, yes i am changing the card out later, im only using thag ine becauze my buddy bundled it with his tower when i bought it from him so i figured id get some use out of it. Does anyone have recommendation in what order to buy the parts? I will be buying the thermal paste, fan, case, and gpu first though.
