I have never seen leather earpads this soft and comfy.
>>
>>56551067
The difference is like 1-2 dB. Hardly possible to accurately A/B that with the shitty auditory memory we have. Inserting them in slightly differently also alters the response as it shifts the resonances in high freqs and deeper fit makes for overall louder response. You can also see that the SR was inserted slightly deeper in those measurements as the resonance has moved up slightly. Bass is basically just seal. There are always some differences between different units which could throw the results off that much with the other things in consideration.

If I increase the bass region on the HD600 would they sound similar to the HD650?

>>
>>56551373
You can, but the cable end needs to be real thin and terminate in 2.5
Alternatively you can buy adapters on ebay for like three bucks that change the 2.5 to 3.5

>>56551550
Yes, but you could have done worse.
>>
>>56551386
Yes, a single parametric peaking filter would do it. Try Q 0.6 +3 dB at 150 Hz. Some units are less off from each other so just +2 dB could also make the difference.
>>

Are they good enough to listen to something that goes deep in the sub bass like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyGGMjH8wTI

From foobar2000, it goes all the way down to 25hz
>>
>>56551650
The LF extension is barely different in the HD 650 and the bass boost they have over HD 650 is in the midbass which makes the few Hz lower extension hard/impossible to hear. Both HD 600 and HD 650 can play down to infrasonic frequencies but the response is rolled off. Nothing that EQ can't fix but both headphones require it and you need to use proper filters to lift it up. What headphones did you have? HD 600? With a parametric equalizer, try:

Preamp -7 dB
Q 0.8 +6 dB at 20 Hz
Q 0.5 -2 dB at 150 Hz
>>
>>56551947
>the bass boost they have over HD 650
I meant HD 600.
>>
What is DSD and should I care about it?
Apparently my Fiio X3ii supports it.
For the record I believe flac is a meme format and don't use it.
>>
>>56551386
No because HD650 has more accurate treble and it's overall not as bad as HD600. EQ can make a headphone sound better to your ears, but it won't make it identical or even similar to a different headphone.

>What is DSD and should I care about it?
An audio format which you should care about if music you like is only available on it. Other than that you can forget it. It doesn't bring anything new to the table for listening purposes and actually complicates things because of the poor support.

FLAC is a great format.
>>
>>56552780
Apparently not, but what's so bad about the treble on the 600s?
>>
>>56552799
It has a nasty peak around 3-4 kHz and rolls off after 6 kHz.
>>
Do multi-driver headphones exist?
>>
>>56553019
Yes, usually in surround sound gayming headsets.
They're shit.
>>
Anyone know the release date for those Powerbeats 3?
>>
>>56552739
That's actually incorrect. The HD600 has a flatter treble response.

HD650 and HD600 don't differ much, identical housings, the only difference is the HD650 has a slightly different driver that's tuned to output less upper midrange and treble response.

A recent study reported that 55 percent of Americans typically listen to music through their laptop or PC speakers, which generally produce nothing below 300 Hz. So people are missing the bottom 3.5 octaves of music, including bass guitar, kick drum, and the fundamental pitches of the male voice. Research has found bass quality accounts for 30 percent of the listeners’ preference.

>DSD
One bit audio sampled at many times greater than Redbook rate. This is denoted by name, DSD64, DSD128, and so on.
The increased sampling rate combined with noise shaping shifts digital artifacts above 20 kHz. The resulting ENOB in the audio range is quite high, although there would be significant ultrasonic noise being fed to amplifiers if no filtering is performed on the signal.
>flac is a meme format
If you believe that, then would DSD be some sort of Supermeme? Ultrameme? DSD format has no use over conventionally stored digital audio and is an inferior option in many regards.

I have it. It's high quality as far as build and durability and for active use (running, cycling, etc). I really don't care for it's sound signature. Unnaturally loud and muddy bass is what kills it for me.

I recommend the Monoprice 8320 for a cheap IEM that sounds good. If you're going for a high end model, I like Etymotic Research.

>>
>>56555407

I mean I sort of need noise isolation but it isn't extremely important. I've never tried open back headphones before and figured I'd take the plunge. How easy is it to hear what I'm listening to/how much outside sound leaks in with semi open backs? Or the K240s in particular?
>>

K240 don't leak nor let much noise in. They're great if you can get them for around 60-70$.

Depends on how much you're willing to spend and what you want to drive with it.

The Magni 2U is a solid all around piece of just-above-entry-level equipment. The Asgard 2 is amazing for $250. The Lyr 2 will drive any headphone that isn't an electrostat, and has tubes (which could be a + or - depending on your preferences). I love my Lyr 2, probably going to keep it forever.

Honestly, if you're not serious about wanting to try tubes, the Jotunheim is your best bet. If you can't spend $400, get the Asgard.

I'm going to get a pair of socket savers to raise the tubes by ~3/4" or so. It'll make them more visible and also help keep the chassis cooler.

With the stock tubes, it doesn't sound much different from the Asgard 2. However, I have noticed that when changing between the stock tubes and the LISST the sound changes pretty noticeably. I'm going to order 2-3 pairs of different tubes to play with tube rolling a little. If I like tubes, eventually I'll probably get an OTL tube amp of some kind. If the novelty of tubes wears off, I'll either drop the LISST in the Lyr permanently or I'll sell it and buy a Jotunheim.

The Lyr is a tube hybrid, so the tubes are only in the pre-amp section while the output section is solid state. It's a good balance. You get some of the fun second order harmonic distortions that people like from tubes while maintaining the benefits of a solid state output section.

Xiaomeme hybrid IEM. Opinions?
Got mine a week ago and eh, I think I like the Piston 3 better.

GearBest. Wasn't aware of that opinion at the time but reading up after yeah, seems so. My Piston 3 left ear died (because I pulled on it too hard one time). Might buy another pair, or maybe look for alternatives in the price range.

The best looking headphones ever made are either the Beyer DT440 of the seventies or the early eighties AKG K series

People will probably recomend ODAC+O2 combo, cuz they're amazing. However, I wonder if something cheaper like the E10K is perfectly capable of doing the job as well. As far as I know the HD600 aren't very hard to drive, unlike AKGs

I was joking man. Both HD800 and HD700 are better than HD600/650. Actually the HD800 is the only open Sennheiser that's worth picking up. HD600/650 are veiled and very far from what a headphone should be.
>>
>>56562780
HD800 is technically more proficient with less placement induced deviation, but it is described as unpleasant to listen to. "weaponized face tweeter". HD800S is an admission of fault as it dampens the problem registers of the original.

Besides, a stax system that includes a good amp it still much less than the HD800 while being technically superior.
>>
>>56562745
I have some HD 650 already though and they're too mushy for my taste. I guess the HD 600 aren't much different? I like more precise, neutral sounding ones.
>>
where do the hd650s fall on a chart of all the open backed headphones?
>>
>>56562814
The HD600 are very neutral, with lower mid bass and slightly higher treble
>>
>>56562814
Refer to >>56562811
Both HD650 and HD600 are mushy, veiled and overall dark headphones. No wonder that people loving the HD600 sound are disgusted by HD800, when HD800 is actually much much better to trained listeners.
HD600/HD650 is loved by a lot of people simply because a lot of people love wall of sounds. For anyone who wants to listen to music the way it's created and meant to be listened to (you know, being able to hear different instruments and nuances), HD600/650 are a failure. But yeah, people here will soon come up and tell you that HD600/650 "measure better" and "are more neutral" basing their witty thoughts on unaccurate measurements and considerations.

Going to need a source on this.
>For anyone who wants to listen to music the way it's created and meant to be listened to (you know, being able to hear different instruments and nuances), HD600/650 are a failure.
And what would you say makes HD 800 better here? Because to me the sound signature of the HD 800: a broad midbass boost, upper mids recess and a peaky treble past 5 KHz is quite veiled in its own right unless you equalize it. Hearing different nuances and instruments is listener's skill which is aided by smooth, flat and extended frequency response.

give them a low Q bass reduction and a boost at 4 kHz.

Scratch that, no 4K change is necessary.

The k612 is not accurate at all
It has serious resonance issues at 2khz which makes it sound like a kitchen radio.

Im sorry that someone would prefer a pleasant sounding headphone instead of ear rape

I just ordered two sets for the family and also because I want to compare a tonally accurate device with limited time accuracy to my stat set.
>>
>>56565646
I'm reading that they are supposed to work only with old Xperias, weird shit.
Do you have a backup recommendation?

Which brand makes the most durable headphones? i'm looking for something that's under 120 euros and wont break in 2 years. over-ear. leakage isn't important. for music and games.

took a close look at those, but doesnt the earpad material wear off really fast? looks like on of those faux leather ones where the material just crumbles off in months. and very prone to sweating.
>>
>>56566247
Yeah, the pleather pads start flaking. For the long term, you're better off replacing them with velour pads.
>>
>>56566325
yeah, before asking the general i was looking at the m40x and the akg k240. the mark2 k240 comes with replacement pads as well. But from what i read, the current ones are produced in china and dont have the durability that the old ones had, and the m40x looks like it has a lot of plasticky connection points that could break.

Been using these literal pieces of shit since christmas of 2008, when I received them as a gift.
>>
A friend in the military can get me Bose Quietcomfort 35 for about 300 USD.

Seems like a good deal.
>>
>>56566475
prefer something with no mic tho, since that's just another part that can break.
also
>fatal1ty
>>
>>56566508
I wasn't recommending them. I'm just poiting out that I don't understand how people brake headphones. You literally just put them on your head
>>
>>56566534
no fucking clue, i dont slam them and i dont have a large head. the plastic joints keep shattering or sound disappears in one or the other side, even though my cables never get tangled and i dont pull on them.
>>
>>56566599
Get a pair with really thicc, removable cables
>>
>>56566614
thats my idea so far, all the ones i'm leaning towards have detachable cables and come with multiple in case i need to switch. As for the plastic, i guess i just have to handle them as if it was a newborn baby.
>>
>>56566651
I think the DT770 (250ohm) has thicc, coiled cables that won't get damaged unless you try to. They're not removable though
>>
>>56566676
myeah, i'll write it down even though it's slightly out of my budget. i hope the hinges are metal, since they look really fucking thin.
>>
>>56566717
The DT770(closed) / 880(semi-open) / 990(open) are built like tanks, if i'm not mistaken
>>
>>56566754
just out of interest though, what is the general consensus here about the m40x or k240 (or the mk2)?

I have own the following headphones, MDR-V6, CD900ST (Japanese version of the MDR-V6), a few vintage pairs of K240s and a pair m50s, which are very similar to the m40x. I gave away a pair of modern, made in China K240s because I didn't like the sound.

All of the k240s have a weak point where the bugel (the tensioned wires over the headband) connect to the drivers. It's a very common fault on a lot of AKG models and it's easy enough to repair. The difference between rthe modern and vintage versions, outside of a much better sound on older models, is that the China made versions are more fragile, they feel lighter and are more plastic.

The CD900ST is nearly identical to the MDR-6. It's been my main headphone since I bought them a few years ago. I wear them for six hours a day. Apart from the "for digital" sticker being slightly faded, they look no different to when I bought them. The MDR-V6 has also seen some heavy use. Like the CD900ST, they look new apart from the cracked pads. The pads can be replaced by cheap Chinese ones, or buy the sheep skin pads from bhphoto.

The M50 may be mostly plastic but not a cheap thin plastic. They feel robust and do take a beating. After years of being used by my niece and being shoved in and out of my work bag, they still look nearly new.

Also look at the DT770 Pro, This would be reaching the top end of your price range though.
>>
Aight, thanks guys. I'll keep on looking but the DT770's do seem like a good choice.

Why is Beats the only headphones that offers decent casual looks while still playing OK sound?

I think they're too big and DJ-like. What I'm looking for is some on-ears like Beats Solo. The only pairs I have been able to find that sorta looks okay is Sennheiser Urbanite on-ear.
