Not really. Hiroshima could give the FBI someone posting child porn, for instance, their ip address and they would eventually track you down through your ISP. If you're using TOR, that would make it a bit more difficult.

If you aren't using a VPN / VPS (a paid one) based in another country (one which does not have a mandatory data retention policy) which does not keep all connection laws (or disposes of them very regularly), then you aren't even concealing your identity with the bare minimum required to consider your internet activity "anonymous"

there's no evidence that 4chan doesn't fully cooperate with any law enforcement that proves they're law enforcement and not some impersonator with absolutely no warrant needed. it's their data; if a cop asks for it and 4chan wants to not deal with lawyers at all, they could just cooperate right away.

cooperating with law enforcement agencies in a conservative fashion (that is, only giving them what you're legally required to and no more) is principled, but costly. and treating agencies adversarially would just make running 4chan that much harder. cooperating is the cheaper, easier road, even if it means throwing users under the bus.

but 4chan didn't start about sharing controversial ideas under the safety of anonymity. chris just didn't want to force people to register usernames for the site when they posted images.

The only true way to post anonymously is to use TOR connected to a VPN service. This way if the VPN keeps logs then all they see is a TOR exit node.

If you use this method on a public network with no cameras, Don't have your phone powered and use a second hand laptop its basically impossible or your identity to be found.

I have a feeling that 4chan keeps tabs on us.

They have entries for each of us based on our IP address. They have logs of every post you've ever made and if the government wanted those logs then Hiro-san would hand them over.

I think that is as far as it goes though. They're no way that 4chan has the capabilities to, say, keep track of every thread that you've lurked.

Now, in this day and age, if you truly wanted to stay anonymous, here is what you would do

Use only laptops, full disk encryption, any external usb storage or hdds have encrypted, only public wifi, log in from different positions and times.

If you have a contract cell phone, keep it in a faraday cage (lead box, something that blocks signal) when not in use. I would not recommend that though, as the signal frequently going in and out is also likely to attract attention in of itself, as that is unusual behavior.
Better to go with a burner phone, or not having one at all and using secure messaging on the PC from public wifis.

4chan is casually anonymous at best, as in, there no IRL name visibly attached social media style. However it's not anonymous from technical perspective.

4chan admins have your IP. They may be autistic enough to do something with it if you anger them a lot.
It requires Google captcha which makes it easy for google to deanonymize you at very least using timing attacks.

What is to stop 4chan from filtering posts through algorithms? What would happen if they decided to associate your writing style, your choice of pics, your choice of threads, with your ip. Or they wouldn't even have to. They could just filter us based on how much we fit certain criteria.

My original question was meant to be, how anonymous are our thoughts? It seems fairly easy based on what we post to recognize people off of writing style, themes they use, etc.

Don't you think unfiltered thought from a fairly large pool would be a great catch for any company researching ai?

How does 4chanx know how many unique ips are in a thread?

the anonymity of 4chan is more that no one has a name and how things that are posted disappear after a while leaving little trace. That sort of got fucked up with all the archives now. As for the IPs, 4chan keeps a log of banned IP's but I cant imagine them keeping the list of IP's of who posted in a thread for that long since that shit would add up.
