Not being able to assemble it when the parts are new means that you run the risk of exceeding the return period of the retailer when you find out a part is bad, forcing you to deal directly with the manufacturer which can be a pain.

I've decided that lugging a mid tower to and from university is a fucking chore. So I've started looking for compact cases but nothing seems right.
>Clean exterior
>MATX or ITX
>No ventilation at the top whatsoever
>Good cooling
>Decently silent
>No windows
>Easily accessable for removal of heatsinks and drives
>Good cable management (this rules out the Define Nano S because I guarantee that any drives behind the motherboard tray will create spaghetti)
>All filtered intakes
Right now, the Corsair 250D looks like the best option, if it weren't for the window.
>>
>>56541988

can I put a dell optiplex 580 motherboard in a standard micro atx case? My southbridge died and an optiplex 580 motherboard is significantly cheaper than other AM3 motherboards ($25 shipped) and compatible with all my hardware as far as I can tell.

Are SSDs on laptops worth it just for sake of smoother desktop experience? I'm thinking of buying a relatively cheap i3 laptop but adding SSD to requirements bumps the price significantly. >>
>>56542857
Putting an HDD in a laptop in 2016 should be punishable by death, and the fact that manufacturers charge (in some cases) literally 3-4x more than cost just to put something in that should be the only option in the first place is horrendous. 128 is a bit small depending on what you are doing, but a 256GB SSD is better for a laptop than any possible configuration of HDDs. They're just plain better suited to that task.
>>
>>56543036
For the workstation related tasks it will kick the ass of a single 6700k, but single core performance will be about on par with a 8350, which is to say not great but able to keep up for most games.

My cousin keeps sapping all the internet bandwidth. How can I go about manually setting a limit on how much one person can use at a time?
>>
>>56544536
That's like asking architecture vs civil engineering. Two very different professions, aiming to accomplish two very different goals.

A professor at MIT once said that CS would be better described as "process procedure". You learn how to approach and solve problems in a logical fashion, and it just so happens that a computer will do the work for you. Ultimately, the goal of getting a CS degree is to become a developer of some sort.

A MIS degree is entirely different. You learn business concepts, IT concepts, and learn how to use the two to efficiently and effectively run an IT operation for a business. It's much more managerial than anything, but you do get a solid background in IT. A likely career path after graduation would be Junior Sysadmin - Sr. Sysadmin - Manager / Director of some sort.

MIS degree is "easier", but both are respectable careers. Are you more interested in the theory of computers, or the administration of enterprise networks?

Well I am at that point in life where I need to commit to a major. I want to get into CS but I also know that it can be a bitch to get a job. I have always been up in the air of picking math, physics, or CS. I figure regardless of what route I go I can always self study in the other two and I am giving up physics to self study as that's more of a hobby.

So the tldr part is if I want a job out of school should I go CS or applied math with self study in CS? If I go the applied math route and find out I hate everything about CS would that still leave me with options? If I am going the math route would it be better to get a math degree with a computing concentration? Do I have to suffer through a masters or can I get away with a bachelors. Can I just say fuck school, spend a year self studying all of the math/CS I would ever need and try and get a job that way?

See why this is kind of a shitty thing to ask on /g/?

>>
>>56544678
>See why this is kind of a shitty thing to ask on /g/?
Yeah, considering 85% of the content on here is about gaymen peripherals and ricing linux.

My input:
If you're worried about a job straight out of school, start on the CS degree. Have you started college or are you in high school right now? Applied math/physics are not really optimal from an employer's point of view, since it likely means that they will have to spend a significant amount of time training you on the job specifics.

CS degree would show you have a handle on developing and program logic, and you would probably be able to get an entry level position relatively quickly. Mind you, it might be some pajeet-tier codemonkey shit, but if you're at all decent you'll quickly be able to show your worth.

This might be something you want to discuss with a career counselor.

$100?!?

I don't think it's your CPU utilization, since that would means @ 12 cents/kwh you are using an average of 1.15kw extra draw.

1150 watts.

Your CPU isn't going to do that. Sounds like a fridge or something that's running nonstop.

I'm using a 2005 single core laptop, with 2 gigs of memory, running Windows XP. Why the fucking hell does Firefox Nightly struggle so pathetically with dealing with text fields? As I write this there are occasionally hangs where the entire browser becomes unresponsive. I keep can keep typing and eventually some manner of buffer handling my input is flushed and ends up in the post box. And oh man, don't even try to backspace.

All and all, yes, it's older hardware and a branch that's in constant development, but this is completely absurd for a browser to have this much trouble doing literally anything. There is absolutely nothing this thing can handle, and it correlates with the e10-s development.

Obnoxious. There are constant hangs no matter what I'm doing. This thing plays 1080p videos more smoothly than it browses the internet, for fuck's sake. Youtube is unusable, whether flash or html5.

Long story short I am about to graduate at my CC with a Liberal Arts: Physical Science focus (Gen Chem 1&2, Engineering Physics 1&2, and Differential Equations). My state lets me transfer into one of it's state colleges at a discount so I am going that route as I am poor and too much fucking around has ruined any hope of really good universities. It will be harder for me to transfer in as CS for me but not impossible.

> career counselor
My university doesn't have anyone like that for CS majors really.

It basically comes down to the fact that Applied Mathematics or Physics is a more abstract degree that isn't really suited to employers needing hard skill. CS has that.
Now if you do one of the aforementioned degrees, and manage to make a relatively impressive portfolio, you might be able to get hired somewhere. You could also make a good portfolio while in CS, and it would look even better.

Also, a lot of positions specify CS degree. Just look at monster/indeed.

Whatever you choose, I wish you the best of luck. I know what it's like to be looking at college and be poor, and I went a different route that I can't recommend, but it turned out OK. I'm sure in the long run you'll manage, no matter what you choose.

I don't know a lot about electronics, so prepare for a proper stupid question.
Basically, I need to determine how much does it cost to keep my server running (it's just an old desktop PC). So, how do I know the power consumption of this computer? Do I have to sum the wattages of the various components?

Are there any practical reasons to embed a file in an image?

Tried yesterday to upload an image from a reputable site, but it claimed to have an embedded file.

Deleted it and ran a bunch of scans today due to my antivirus losing connection to an online service, but nothing was found.

Most likely a coincidence or that something's happening to the Kaspersky portal today, but is there any reason to do that to a jpeg?

To share files over a service that only allows image files
Just downloading or opening a jpeg with an embedded file wont infect you, you have to take an extra step which common sense 2016 should block.
Back before the captchas there was a virus that propogated itself by posting an image file telling people to rename the file to .js and run it, ending up with the entirety of 4chan being virus spam.

Yes but you could just drop the files where the Linux files are. If you care about order make a folder called stuff and save stuff inside. You might also make the USB a persistent bootable live USB by allocating all the free space as persistent save space, then you could save files to the user folder in the USB, and you could access this files from within the live OS or just browsing the USB folders.

They do consume a pretty reasonable amount of power and putting that much power down a digital cable would be pretty absurd and dangerous, also depending on the distance there could be a lot of power loss for using DC as opposed to AC. In general though it's a lot easier just to use an AC cable to the monitor because it seperates power and communication lines, making designs simpler. PSU's a decade or two ago did come with extra AC outlets so you could power the monitors from the PSU input, but they ditched it probably because of safety concerns. If you want to improve cable management you can always wire the AC inputs in series so you only use one socket for multiple monitors.

Well considering that almost every phone uses a class D amplifer, you've got to wonder why you would want FLAC quality on such a shitty amplifier. Just convert them, it'll use less space and will consume less power during playback. If you insist on wasting your power though, VLC mobile should support FLAC, it will probably slow your phone considerably though.

I remember using CodeBlocks for C++
I want something similar to that,
>>
>>56546685
I guess, but most games rely heavily upon specific API's. I think even OpenGL requires some OO C++ to run properly, so I doubt you could do a "AAA" game in pure C anymore, at least not a full 3D game anyway.

I think Google was working on this a year ago, but they made it some paid service only available in the US..

That's what I thought, according to some YouTube videos I could try to open it and un-stuck the head. Apparently dust is not as big a problem as some people say, I mean sure after opening a hard drive you shouldn't use it anymore, but if it helps recover files for a day or two I'm totally ok with it. That or putting it on the freezer...

What APU is best for "Gaming"?
I'm trying to build a gaming pc into my old xbox original case and I simply cannot find a way to put in a graphics card, so an APU is supposedly my savior..

Is APUs even good enough these days for gaming on medium to high settings?
>>
>>56549590
I doubt you could realign the head to be honest. Those things are aligned to an insane precision these days, even if you did manage, the error is more likely to be mechanical failure in some way. Best just to give up now. If you really need the data you could always send the drive off so the platter can be read in a clean room.

PLEASE HELP ANONS, I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO GO INTO A PC REPAIR SHOP~~

Had to replace my dying/ dead PSU, and now whenever I turn on my PC from being off, or resume it from sleeping, it sort of "revs up". This is what it'll do:
>Begins to start up for a few seconds
>Stops abruptly, stays off for a second or 2
>Repeat anywhere from 2-15 times until it finally turns on

Help friends?

Depends what you want to play. You can write off nearly any game released in the last year or two. Have you tried a low profile graphics card instead? They're pretty small these days.

Hello /g/entlemen, I am a biology major graduate and I want my career to be in CS. I have done a metric fuckton of self study, and love the subject a ton, essentially programming and learning new things every night. Unfortunately since I don't have a degree, I cant find a dev job, not even codemonkey tier :( Any advice on how to get in the door so that I can start my career?
>>
>>56549803
Make a decent portfolio of projects to make up for your lack of credentials. Find a thing you find interesting and develop it as an open source project, upload projects to a git and use that as a portofolio of your previous projects, I've even heard of people using things like stack overflow to boost their portfolio by having a good score / rating on the website.

Generally speaking you shouldn't need to use programs such as CCleaner. A lot of people argue it often does more damage than good and that editing the registry is pointless these days. If you want to reduce junk data that windows accumulates you can just use disk cleanup which is provided with the OS.
>>
>>56549995
thank you. what about ATF Cleaner?
>>
>>56550126
Appears to do less than Disk Cleanup, but includes a browser cleanup. I mean, I argue you should delete all cookies and history at the end of every session, but that's just me.
>>
>>56550162
I'm like you. but I need something for windows too. are you sure disk clean up is safe/useful?

I've been itching to jump on the Nvidia 1070 for the while. I do have the money however, I'm wondering if it is worth waiting Black Friday/Cyber Monday. Would the price drop be that significant? Or should I just get it now?
>>
>>56550207
Yeah it's about as safe as you're going to get. It won't delete old restore points unless you explicitly navigate to that part and tell it to, and it's useful because it covers all the areas that Windows accumulates junk data. You shouldn't need to run it more than once a year though for some spring cleaning.

IPv4 addresses are 32 bits in size and contain 4, 8 bit fields that range from 0 to 255.

I want to trim it to separate songs. I have access to an android tablet and a slow wifi connection.
Is there any good android app for this ?
I don't want to use an online service because it would take ages to upload the file.
Please, recommend me a good app.

>>56545449
I would say thanks anon, because on a technical level it did just what you thought it would do, but it still wont work, it say I need the authorization from a user that is ME. It does not make sense.
>>
>>56551697
I said new games, not ones that are two years old. Hyperthreading optimization is only beginning to make progress, and not happening in every game. But for high end there's a compelling argument that you can do better than i5
>>
>>56551885
you can easily check "new games" benchmarks yourself you retarded fuck.

just because it was released a few years ago doesnt mean it cant be good for benchmarks.
game devs dont make a new fucking engine from scratch every year for every game. for example BF1 uses the same fucking engine BF4 and Star Wars, with modifications of cources, but it's still the same base engine.
Same with every fucking Call of Duty game.
Some of the others are good because they are really fucking resources intensive like Witcher 3.

And you're a fucking retard if you think there has been any major changes in the way games are made and optimized in the last 2 years.
Fucking DX12 and Vulkan isnt even mainstream yet.
>>
>>56549959

>>
>>56552200
why the fuck did you post in this old thread AND the new thread?
>>
>>56552001
Meh. Your wrong but it's not worth putting a lot of effort into arguing about. There's a lot of room for optimizing even given the common engines. It's really a matter of how well you're willing to code for multiple threads. An i7 isn't the first thing I would spend extra money on in a system, but it can make a difference in some modern game, and that number should increase as time goes on. Especially factoring in things like VR.
