I recently installed Service Pack 1 on a fairly fresh 7 install. What should I do to get fully updated without downloading any telemetry crap or Windows 10 crap, but also so that I can do it quickly? Manually reading the update information takes forever.

I downgraded from 10, they don't even list drivers for this model.

I just got myself a copy of Driver Booster by Iobit, downloaded everything except graphics drivers, then took the drivers from AMDs site, and everything else not found I did through Windows update.

It's now faster than 10 ever was, now that they are forcing ads and Cortana on everyone, and disabled loads of options that were previously available on 10, I got so sick of it. That, and the Wireless Drivers always blue-screened my laptop.

I even installed Windows 7 in GPT mode so I could use UEFI, which means i still get all the extended features and super fast boot times.

I installed windows 7, couldn't install 10 because of a usb issue. Now I decided, instead of buying a new USB drive, I will just keep on 7. There's nothing wrong with it.

But I have a question:
I have windows 7 Pro, not Ultimate. Do I have all the Japanese fonts even though I can't download a language pack? Is there a way to get better japanese fonts without ultimate?

I don't know the answer of your question, but if you don't find any, search how to upgrade Pro to Ultimate. You can do it without formatting.

Not really. It's a newer OS, it demands more resources, it's bloated, uses 8 times more telemetry. How would it possibly be faster?
>has Directx12
Has something less than 0.01% people use or need? Wow that's great.

It doesnt demand more resources, the kernel is actually way faster. And it's nowhere near as bloated as Windows 7.
>8 times more telemetry
Proof? Also you can turn it off.

>Windows 10 has a lot of genuinely useful new features, as well as key improvements to old features, compared to Windows 7. None is enough on its own to make an upgrade necessary, but when combined they do make a compelling case.

>You’ve got better search, window management, file management, gaming tools and more. Windows 10 is faster in general use, too, and the new Start Menu is in some ways better than the one in Windows 7.

I came here from Gentoo.

I had serious issues with my AMD drivers and wine games, and I really need to play WoW and LoL. So it just isn't worth it for me to use GNU/Linux anymore unless I bought a new nvidia GPU. Linux is great but it has it's issues, gaming being one of them. I love it otherwise.

Also, windows is kind of necessary for Japanese stuff. Better IME, and all of the 3D hentai games.
>>
>>56538360
So? Plenty of time left, until then Windows 10 will work even better.
There is no reason to still be using 7 tho.

Both wow and lol can run on anything debian from my experience, including Ubuntu and mint . You should have used an OS which comes with drivers out of the box. And all of those things run on Windows 7.

I should get around to using gentoo. What did you like about it?
>>
>>56538940
Portage is really great. I don't think I could go back to using apt or something like that. Use flags are really useful, you can add features to a program or remove ones you don't need. You don't need to use systemd on gentoo either. genkernel makes compiling a new kernel very easy. eselect makes configuring your system really easy too.
>>
>>56539009
damn, sounds really flexible
so the only issue was trying to run games?
>>
>>56539074
Yeah and it's only my hardware, I'm sure it works fine for other people. I know that league and WoW both have platinum rating in wine.

I don't install updates in the first place, but when 4k native drives and/or m.2 SSDs start becoming commonplace for consumers I'll either move to Linux or Server 2012 R2. Server is usable now but I don't enjoy having to use such a bloated OS as my daily driver.

haven't used it, but from some random youtube video, seems like it's simpler than procexp in terms of info, but has other features (the network stuff) and its good enough for a quick usage

procexp shows a shitload of info about a process. like, if you want to learn about windows internals, even even look for malware, use procexp.

Thanks for the help man, unfortunately this one now stops me before I get to hit install. The Status is now showing "unsupported partition table" in red and install is greyed out. So it seems that it is definitely something to do with the formatting of my SSD and not the version of windows loader.

Unfortunately I have no idea what to do next.

Did you format through the windows 7 iso while installing? It gives you the option to format while installing, you know. Should be the part where you pick which disk to install from.
>>
>>56543923
Here's what I'm trying now.

I'm going to do a fresh install of windows but put it on my HDD (WD blue 1tb) so I can go in and wipe my SSD completely clean. I will then ensure that it is formatted as MBR instead of GBT and go back, fresh install windows again onto the SSD, wipe the WD HDD and hopefully this will clear it up........ if that doesn't work I think I'll just have to bite the bullet and buy windows 10.
>>
>>56543923
>unsupported partition table
Also, this only pops up depending on whether you're on GPT or MBR, I think.
>>
>>56544309

Just get ultimate it's better, or at least professional.
http://m.winsupersite.com/windows-7/windows-7-product-editions-comparison

Steps
1. Download windows
2. Create a bootable USB using rufus or a similar program, it's very simple just click to launch and select the ISO (takes a few minutes to make a bootable USB)
3. Turn off laptop/PC
4. Boot your laptop using USB
5. Install windows, preferably don't connect it to Internet during installation. Here you should make sure you've disabled updates.
6. Download daz loader, or just move it to your PC from a USB or your phone if you've previously downloaded it (don't put it on the bootable USB tho)
7. Then launch daz loader, follow it's instructions
8. Additionally, you should download spybot anti-beacon to make sure windows doesn't do something sneaky
9. Again, make sure you disabled updates because Microsoft is retarded. You can use wsus offline updates if you ever need them.

Windows usually doesn't come with necessary network drivers so download them and put them somewhere safe if you use ethernet cable to access Internet.
>>

Is there a way to still install this? It just looks fucked up now.

Hey I'm installing windows and after the "completing installation" step of the boot dvd, it restarts, I see "starting windows", then it blinks a bunch of horizontal white lines and hangs on a black screen. If I boot in safe mode, it passes "windows is starting" then a dialog says "installation cannot be completed in safe mode, please reboot normally".

I've got an nvidia 9800 gt+. Any ideas? Could it be switching to mobo video out or something?

how old is that guide? latest versions of firefox broke some extensions, so I guess that could be the problem.
btw, why ask this here? how is this particularly related to win7?

Still works, you can still change FF user interface using stylish, you just need to declare the right headers so as to affect FF itself.

The md5 and sha-1 check out. should i have used the other x64 version that's just "dvd" and not "dvd u"? I don't know what the "u" stands for and didn't notice it when it downloaded.

It contains a particular update, that's all.
See if you can get video output through your integrated cpu graphics, if you have that.
Try Ultimate.

Working on it. I need to find a male-to-female D-sub cable somewhere around my house. not sure if it exists.
