Considering switching to linux, is the loss of drivers a big deal though?

Motherboard manufacturer only offers chipset and onboard audio drivers in windows. I guess sound will be shit no matter what in linux but is the chipset performance loss large?

Yeah, sure.

If your laptop has specific shortcuts or custom keys that dont work without installing drivers on Windows, they definitely wont on Linux. You can bet your ass there are no drivers for that kind of shit.

Dear god, that looks like such a time to be alive.

Just try a live cd and see. Considering Drivers, linux has become surprisingly solid. What kind of hardware are you on? If it's brand new, you could try the latest 4.7 kernel to get your stuff running, it's actually not that hard.
Your chipset drivers will be fine.

Trips speak the truth.
Good thing I still got hold of a gf that isn't fucked in the head like other women.

That's a really bad stock photo

Just boot a linux distro from a flash drive or live CD without installing. Try several of them to see the compatability. There are laptop models which come with Linux installed (usually Ubuntu), so if you have one of those but it came with Windows then it will definitely be supported.
Memes aside, linux does have a lot of drivers and most things work out of the box. I've personally never had any driver issues.

Also, sound should just work, pulseaudio is out of the rough patches, so you have things like hotplugging and total control over your sound pipeline.
I don't use it on my desktop though, since I don't need the extra flexibility, pure alsa does it must times.
>>
>>56527019
my laptop will not shut down or sleep properly unless it has IMEI installed, as far as I know theres no management engine equivalent for linux, am I fucked?

Why is everybody here so hung up with laptops. These mostly have fuckall in the chipset driver department, but tons of other peripheral drivers.
Looks like a desktop to me.

A desktop that will be awesome with gentoo running.

IIRC the kernel has support for this ugly wart, Intel put into the world.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

What's the fucking point of using a lightweight OS on a desktop of all places.

On laptops it makes sense, but going pure linux is retarded. What are you even going to use a powerful system for if you're not into editing or shit like that.

Might as well use an old ass Pentium PC, wouldn't make a difference for your Gentoo meme

I'm terribly sorry for interjecting another moment, but what I just told you is GNU/Linux is, in fact, just Linux, or as I've just now taken to calling it, Just Linux. Linux apparently does happen to be a whole operating system unto itself and comprises a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Most computer users who run the entire Linux system every day already realize it. Through a peculiar turn of events, I was misled into calling the system "GNU/Linux", and until now, I was unaware that it is basically the Linux system, developed by the Linux project.

There really isn't a GNU/Linux, and I really wasn't using it; it is an extraneous misrepresentation of the system that's being used. Linux is the operating system: the entire system made useful by its included corelibs, shell utilities, and other vital system components. The kernel is already an integral part of the Linux operating system, never confined useless by itself; it functions coherently within the context of the complete Linux operating system. Linux is never used in combination with GNU accessories: the whole system is basically Linux without any GNU added, or Just Linux. All the so-called "GNU/Linux" distributions are really distributions of Linux.
