The reason ethereum isn't doing anything is that bitcoin exists and since it can now do everything ethereum can but has far more support there is no reason to use ethereum.

It doesn't really matter that vanilla bitcoin is somewhat limited, because one of the core points of bitcoin is that it can serve as a base for layers to be built on top of it.
One such layer that has been developed is called Counterparty, and it is amongst other things a feature-complete port of the ethereum scripting language but using bitcoin's blockchain instead.
