If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

My dilemma:

T60: 4:3, Old CPU, hard to find in mint condition. botnet (AMT) can be removed by software
T400: 16:10, Oldish but very usable CPU, botnet can be removed through hardware
T410: 16:10, newer hardware, BEST keyboard ever. Can't have botnet removed
T420: 16:9, even newer powerful CPUs available, botnet not going anywhere, best keyboard
T430: 16:9 chiclet shit but can be replaced manually with some modification giving you a god-tier keyboard. New CPU, but botnet can't be removed.
T440+: dog shit

Just got a T430 for school (i5-3320M, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD), and it has a lot of room for upgrades (8-16GB RAM, SSD, maybe eGPU). My currently Desktop PC (Q9400, GT610 2GB, 4GB DDR2) sucks a lot, and for my birthday I was going to make a build with an i7-6700K (or Zen if performance are really good for a fair price), a 8GB RX 470 and 16GB DDR4, but then I realized that the ThinkPad is better than I expected, so I don't really know if I should build a new Desktop or just buy a dock and upgrade the Laptop. What do you suggest? I'm not an hardcore gamer but sometimes I enjoy games (or at least I would, if this machine didn't suck this much), I do some basic graphics work, a lot of photo editing (I use a lot Photoshop and Lightroom), C++ and hopefully C# programming
>>
My 4 year old L530 is getting somewhat hot on the bottom, CPUs are around 62°C now in summer, hdd is okay at 46°C.
Should I do something against that or only if it gets hotter than that?

>368 charging cycles

Is this normal for lenovo?
>>
>>56515281
Mine merely lost 50% of its charging capacity.
>>
>>56515354
That's still quite bad. I also have a HP compaq 6730b from 2009 and that one still has 86% of it's original capacity
>>
>>56515281
Depends on the battery manufacturer and number of cells. Obviously, a 6cell will see more cycles than a 9cell and subsequently get worn out faster. I have a T60 9cell from 2007 with 400 cycles on it and it's still at ~75% capacity.
>>
>>56515378
Actually, it's at 55% of its original charging capacity with unknown cycle count. It's a 6 cell x220 tablet I bought off ebay.

By the way, I meant "merely" sarcastically. Losing 50% is bretty bad.

T60 has a better keyboard than any of those other models, and the 15" models have IPS screens. You can also swap in a T61 board and flash Middleton's BIOS on it to use Penryn CPUs and gain SATA II speeds.

Only some of the high resolution ones, and they seem to have problems with dust getting into them and rows of pixels breaking at the bottom because the lid flexes every time you move the display

It's REALLY painful, you have to mod the embedded controller firmware and UEFI.
A failed firmware flash and your board is basically toast (unless you know JTAG)
http://www.zmatt.net/unlocking-my-lenovo-laptop-part-1/
>>
>>56515669
I wouldn't say very difficult. They're uncommon for sure, but nothing on the level of an R50p or W701ds. You just have to be patient and watchful. I got a UXGA T60p in near-mint condition with an almost unused genuine Panasonic 9cell battery for $95. The T60p is the safer way to go, since all 15" models had IPS screens, while you'd have to sift through a lot of crappy 1024x768 TN panels looking at regular T60s.
>>
>>56515845
It's worth doing if you want to keep it running for a long time... but may as well just get a T420 if you value your time.
>>

If you do the T61 board swap I mentioned, I think the absolute best you can get in there without physical modification is an X9000 or so. That's stupid, though, because those CPUs cost like $150 for nothing but a 300MHz increase over the much more practical T9300, which only costs ~$20. The T61 board supports a maximum of 8GB of DDR2. Again, it's not really practical to max it out, that'll run you $100+. If you can live with 4GB, do so, and only go over 6GB if you absolutely have to. If you leave the stock board in, your options are much more restricted. Merom is the best CPU generation you have access to, and RAM is restricted to 3GB due to the shitty chipset. You also won't get SATA II, even with BIOS mods.
>>

Hi guys!
Back from yesterday with the x230t.
I installed Antergos as one of you recommended.
It was easy to install as you told me, and works quite nicely.
I already found some courses on learning linux but I'm wondering if you have/know any sites or source for learning it efficiently. (For those who didn't see my post yesterday, I want to learn linux server admin stuff [from scratch])
Thanks again and have a nice day! c:
>>
>>56517303
The screen, yes. There are no 15" 4:3 T61s, and the 15.6" 16:10 T61 does not have an IPS screen.

It's more cost effective to just buy a whole T61 than to fuck around buying separate motherboards. Get an Intel model, because the Nvidia ones like to kill themselves and you can buy an Advanced Dock to add external graphics if you need it. You need to get a 4:3 14" T61, no other shape will fit. There's also a couple of modifications you have to make to the T60 chassis, but it's fairly easy. This video should cover anything I forgot to mention: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-m74otZqd2Y
>>
>>56517439
The laptop starts windows 7. Does that mean it doesnt have admin password? I was one click away from buying and you guys scared me, lol. It seems like pretty good value for Ivy Bridge with docking and eGPU capabilities.
>>
>>56517549
>Does that mean it doesnt have admin password?
no, that just means no startup password. Keep in mind that it might not even allow booting from anything else than the HDD. If it has a fingerprint reader, it probably won''t work since you can't reset it. Some other things might be also disabled in the BIOS and you won't be able to enable them.

the x260 keyboard is same/better for writing, but the layout otherwise is shitty.

That SD card looks appealing, I'd probably get a USB/SD Card adapter just in case.

I made the switch to thinkpad and SSD at the same time, three months ago

its fucking amazing. totally silent except when the fan starts, and that only happens during 1080p HD playback on youtube, not from external storage.

sometimes it doesn't even kick in at all and stays quiet and cool.
i wouldn't recommend a large SSD either though to be honest, $100 for a 256gb SSD still is nowhere near the price per GB of a HDD. I'd get a 128gb ssd, load the OS on it, and then get a flash drive or small external hard drive.

T460

Hi, Freetard here.

Just got a t420 and installed Parabola. Considering it's a FSF-approved, free-as-in-freedom zealot distrobution, the wifi card doesn't work.

Can the T420's Wifi card be easily changed to something that runs free software?

Curious if I can change this to something easily or if I'll have to use a Wifi dongle.

I happen to have the source code for all Intel software on my computer and yes. Active Management Engine installs an SSH server on your machine that will give full access to your computer to anyone who logs in as user "iamthensa".

To prevent this from happening, just post a Facebook status advising Intel that you forbid them from spying on you.

I had a usb 3 card, but it used a fuck load of power, caused a lot of system interrupts, and made all my drives hot as hell
>>56527412
nowadays all high powered laptops struggle to keep cool under load
turning off turbo boost can help a bit, but expect temps in the 90s with fans maxed out under full load
>>56527333
what's your temps under full load?
I have a 3320m, and the 1 gig fermi 5400m and the cpu runs at ~100c, and the gpu is at like 85c.
also can you update your drivers normally?
whenever I try to update my drivers it always fails, and the only drivers that seem to work are some from 2015
>>
>>56528189
under full load of everything (i7-3630qm with turbo enabled + overclocked gpu) in a hot environment the CPU is ~99C (at 105C it shuts down) and the GPU is 85C MAX. CPU never caused shut down so far.
The problem with such config is that it requires 135W PSU. On 90W it drains additional power from battery when you load it during gayming.
>1gig fermi 5400m
Open it up and identify the chip. It can be either 28nm or 40nm, depending on how recent this machine is.
>driver issue
Had the same issue. Clean install seems to work fine (purge everything related to nvidia using 3rd party app)

what app is that?
I tried the clean install option when installing the nvidia drivers and it didn't work
also gpuz says it's the 40nm part sadly, but on the magnesium above the dvd drive it said some date at the end of 2012.
also have you tried running tests with turbo boost turned off (set max cpu speed to 99% in windows power settings)
on my 2012 macbook pro my temps would go from 104c on the cpu (throttled to 1.5-2ghz after 30 minutes) but with turbo turned off my cpu rarely goes above 95c, and is usually around 90c
>>56528290
all you have to do is extract the XP drivers, and have device manager load them manually.
at least it worked that way on my t40

GPUz doesn't distinguish 40nm and 28nm GPUs. You need to read the chip number directly from it.

2. Are there any models that have problems running linux? I don't mean resource wise, I mean graphical glitches and driver issues.

3. The only games I want to play are somewhat low end stuff like MUGEN and Tabletop simulator. What are some good models I could get used for under $350 that will run stuff like Tabletop Sim alright? How much difference does the Intel HD 3000 have to the 4000?

On my first X200S. It's like night and day in comparison to my "new laptop".

1. 16:10 instead of 16:9
Can't begin to tell you what a horrible thing 16:9 has been to my posture and neck, having to scroll and look across constantly. With my X200 I can now use a computer much more productively. In fact I want to get a X60 to get the 4:3 screen.

2. Non-chiclet keyboard
Again, like night and day. I'm used to typing on a proper laptop keyboard without my fingers getting hurt by a razor sharp edge.

3. High quality plastics
Once you get the feel of high quality durable plastic, you won't go back to that try hard magnesium alloy shit. This thing has a magnesium roll cage and the hinges are made from steel. Meanwhile Macbook pro hinges like to bounce around like mad.

4. Older hardware = better support in non-windows OS
I'm running FreeBSD and it's mostly supported except for sleeping which causes issues with the USB connections and the trackpoint.

5. Replaceable parts
It's like the movie WALL-E, nothing like a crapintrash where you have to get a brand new motherboard to get anything "fixed".

6. Powerful machine
Even this low voltage CPU has much more power than an iPad Pro for example, and can make short work of websites for shit posting. Remember, because sites have to support mobile phones it means that X200 with its 2008 CPU is more than enough to handle it.

No, it won't play games but that's not what this machine is for.

not really an old game, but I briefly tried playing Dwarf Fortress. It got pretty hot pretty insanely quick and I stopped before I got any throttling or shutdown. this was on debian btw

I didn't inspect for this when I opened the x200 up, but. Would it be possible to change the speakers? They are complete shit (It's not like I'm going to play orchestra music on this thing but hey)

I'm actually wondering all the upgrades you can do on this thing.

Noob question

>Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

So is the ThinkPad 13 trash? I'm looking to buy a cheap laptop for college
>>
>>56534316
Correct. The thinkpad 13 has lower quality materials.
>>
>>56534316
Z series is decent too, but they haven't been made in a while.
>>
>>56524876

The key thing here, is that only some T420 has Thinkpad wireless cards. The rest are Intel wireless cards, and those are impossible to operate without binary blobs. Tainting the whole distro of a non-free colour.

You'll need to change that in order to be truly free. I'm already looking for an Atheros Wifi card, because when I install libreboot in my x200, it won't work.

Also, If you are a freetard, why didn't you pick a T400?
>>
what thinkpad do i buy?
budget is 400 usd
>>
>>56534243
A docking station would be convenient but not required, it only makes your peripherals, ethernet and power stay in one place.

You'll need an adapter (pe4l or exp gdc, i use the expresscard variant of the exp gdc myself), a power supply for it and a desktop gpu.
>>
>>56534677
and what about doing this with linux? particularly debian (the botnet/nonfree distribution). i really dislike windows both as an OS and a company and don't want to dual boot if at all possible. would there be any outstanding issues or options i should select over others?

sorry for the double post>>56534824
but if i'm set on using the advance docking station path, it says it has a PCI-Express slot. i assume that's one of the adapter options you're talking about? it says it has an integrated power supply. so if i understand right, the only thing i need to do using an advance docking station, it to make sure i get a graphics card that fits inside of it and is linux compatible, and then i'll be able to dock my thinkpad up and essentially make it a desktop? that idea is just so cool to me
>>
>>56534824
It works 100% with Windows 7.

Nice coincidence though because i want to migrate to Linux and the eGPU doesn't work out of the box, right now I'm trying to make it work and even posted on fglt here without luck >>56533678

>>56534882
The advanced dock isn't compatible with the t420 but yeah it does the same thing.
>>
>>56534882
- the advanced docing station only works with really old models
- it only supports really low-powered and small GPUs, forget about using that for gaming

It's not really.

If you get the ExpressCard adapter the procedure is plug gpu into adapter, plug power supply cables into adapter and gpu, plug ExpressCard cable into laptop, install drivers, reboot, done.

the only drivers i need to install would be the one for the graphics card, right? or do you need more drivers for the adapter?

i've already got a decent PS in my desktop that I intend to salvage out for my thinkpad dock. I have a very old graphics card though (Geforce 200TI or something, idk the exact name), so i'll be upgrading that. I'll start off with a dual boot betweens win10 and debian, see if it works on win10, and then i'll see if it works on debian. If it does, i'm likely going to reinstall debian without the dual boot and just use wine to run games. i'll post updates as they come in, probably very late this month or early next

You can set up PCI passthrough from a Windows VM and have native performance with no weird wine bugs.

Yeah I was thinking about getting an Atheros card, but I've had some trouble verifying which will 100% work with the T420 and free software. If you, or anyone else knows, feel free to vouch for one.

i don't think windows vm's are legal, but i might look into that if wine is too bad. the only game i really play is guild wars 2 every now and then and supposedly wine works great for that

one important question: will it automatically revert back to using the internal graphics card when i unplug the external one from the expresscard slot? also, i can access the expresscard slot while this is docked into a minidock 3 right?

So, I'm putting arctic silver down, but it seems like the cooling system was designed to use thermal pads, at least on the GPU. This also looks like it was disassembled and regreased before.

Seems like the heatsink makes good contact, so I'll let it be.

SSD
8GB RAM
802.11ac WLAN
LTE WWAN
Palmrest with fingerprint reader
Torbo memory / UWB (Both are useless outside of Windows, but why not?)
USB 3.0 in expresscard slot

old latitudes (up to xx30 series, with the exception of e6530) have garbage screens. I never got Txxx series, but I got r60 and while the screen was old, it didn't tire my eyes at all. Which can't be said about e4310 which I also had.

Yeah but unplug it when the laptop is turned off. It'll crash if you do it while it's powered on, imagine having a desktop and suddenly taking the gpu out.
