>less than 5% performance drop in wine eh?

Where the fuck did this meme come from, wine is not a viable solution for unsupported programs.

The only reason WINE exists is to con winfags into switching to Linux. It has never even been remotely capable of the things it's said to do.

Wine is trash, Linux is also trash

This is the first time I've heard anyone say there's less than x percent performance drop on wine, everyone I've seen discuss it have openly admitted that it gives a performance hit.

Side note, AMD Linux drivers are pretty bad and that's coming from a die hard AMDrone. In my experience, nvidia perform better on Linux but their drivers are still pretty bad. Caveat; I haven't used Linux since my GT 610 was new.

Even if you use fast paced games you don't need anything over 100fps.

It doesn't matter. Your mind CAN perceive things fast, but your body still takes the same time to respond. 1ms difference will almost never matter.

This is why I am sick of people telling me to stop working so hard and just use a VM, as if there was no downside to a VM.

I am a native, because if freaking works the way it was made to. Just wish it wasn't so hard to find old hardware at a decent price.

You can detect the difference with your ears but cannot react quick enough.

"The average reaction time for humans is 0.25 seconds to a visual stimulus, 0.17 for an audio stimulus, and 0.15 seconds for a touch stimulus."

Google "human response time"

Everyone knows WINE is shit. Linux is unstable, slow garbage with no fucking software.
>>
>>56513725
VMs work incredibly well when configured properly. The performance difference varies, VMs give a pretty consistent 85-95% performance depending on config whereas wine can be better or worse depending on game.
>>
>>56513847
>Linux is unstable
That's why most global enterprises use it. On desktop, it definitely has a long way to go. On servers it's rock solid.
>>
This is the first time I've been on /g/ in about a week. What's up with the 20 bajillion Apple posts and this shit? It's nothing but "trolls" and bots. Is this really what things are coming to? /g/ is fucking dead.

>>
>>56513725
Linux VM in Windows host or Windows VM in Linux host? Because in my experience the former is extremely choppy compared to native Linux, I haven't tried the latter but I would not think demanding games would be playable. I was pleasantly surprised by league of legends via wine, that shit is flawless for such a crappy quality bug ridden game.

Wine provides an abstraction layer for certain things (such as DirectX), it does not emulate an entire operating system. If it worked the same as a VM everything would work flawlessly, albeit slower.
>>
Try some directx9 with galliumnine and wine with gallium nine patchset. Maybe you get better performance with this.

when these threads pop up, the same pattern always repeats itself.

half a dozen posts immediately following it are expressly or partially agreeing with the OP.

then 90% of the posts that follow are typical /g/ opinions. this is some shady shit.

>I haven't tried the latter but I would not think demanding games would be playable

I am posting right now within a windows VM on a Linux host. I passthrough my Fury GPU, giving native performance in intensive games. Witcher 3 runs at 60fps @ 1440p, no choppyness or weirdness comes from using the VM.
>>
>>56514125
Never run Linux as a VM on hyper-V. There are countless driver bugs (because Hyper-V is a pile of shit).
Windows runs well in KVM if tuned, one of the key factors is configuring the disk. You can pass a hardware disk through if you want, I've done it and can vouch for it working well. If you use an image file:
1. Your disk(s) has/have to be fast enough to support two operating systems
2. Set io to native and cache to none (threads causes horrible performance)

He makes one valid point for the average user: older software compatibility.
If you try to run older software on Windows 7 it generally works. Windows 8 and higher it falls on its face. There are certain instances where you would need older software (especially in business).

I can vouch for this as well. Bonus is you get a Windows install that can both run as a VM and cold boot. Works like a damn charm.

It's crazy at times how libre software makes it easier to work with MS shit than MS' own products do.

Have the same setup. Only problem I ran into was my hyperduo card trying to hook IOMMU wrong so I can't use it along with a pcie passthrough (the LV unregisters itself on boot).

>It's crazy at times how libre software makes it easier to work with MS shit than MS' own products do.
The KVM "hardware" is a standardized set known to work well across the board. It's kind of like putting Windows on a Mac.
>>
>>56514143
Thank you, I could see why some people would want that.

Still think we should have some standard layer that everything could fall back to, but such a thing is fantasy and will just breed a dozen new standards.

In terms of graphics Vulkan is a viable alternative standard. Doom works incredibly well in wine because of Vulkan.
