Definitely Normies.

The most glaring invasion of Normies was apparent in online games, most predominantly Counter-Strike. No other game has brought as many Normies online.
Quake before it was still mostly robots.

You do realize you're as boring and uninteresting as the rest of the masses? You're not special for being a weeb NEET shut-in that rots his brain in front of a screen all day. You're just as normal as everyone else with the only exception of not having a healthy outdoor routine.
>>
>>56512986
Nice no true scotsman fallacy.
But no, I find CSGO to be a pretty good game. Sure, there are a lot of issues and it doesn't have the flair and the feeling that 1.6 had but it's still a good game. That said, there's no other choice than playing it. 1.6 is dead and everyone plays GO now.

>>
>>56513090
I meant dead, as in, there is no eSports scene anymore. No tournaments, no competition, does the game even get updated anymore?
Also:
>17k players ingame
That's literally nothing.

Also, nobody wants to play on public servers. At least I don't.

>>
>>56513112

I've played 1.6 a couple times lately on pub servers and never have I encountered someone from my country. (Germany)
It was all just russkies.
>>
>>56513122
Because I have no interest in doing so. What a strange question.

>>56513115
You misunderstood. I meant to point out how people use the term "normie" as a way to distance themselves from people that carry out social interaction and go outside once a day. The reality is that those aren't qualifiers to make you normal. Therefore, not doing those things doesn't make you special, which is what /g/ and /r9k/ believes.
>>
the degeneration of the internet happened on aug 1, 2003 when myspace was founded
>>
>>56513206
Not them but normie is a general term if you don't know the basic functions of a computer and buy the yearly apple product you are a normie.
>>
>>56513206
Normalfag doesn't mean "goes outside." It means an insufferable cunt whose entire life and opinions are based on what is trending on Twitter and Facebook. Someone who is constantly using Snapchat to send stupid pictures to other people who send stupid pictures back. Someone who doesn't have any hobbies short of social media and drugs/drinking/partying. Someone who argues with emotional appeals or social shaming instead of logic. Moralfags. The list goes on.

Normalfags, the kinds that populated MySpace and now populated Facebook and Twitter, ruined the internet.
>>
>>56513128
What's the point of fixing a game that doesn't need fixed? Or did you mean content updates as in adding the Revolver, Negev and Bizon to 1.6?
>>
>>56513128

>>
>>56513256
While those are the actions of a large portion of people, I wouldn't say the word 'normal' has much to do with that. Nor does the act of NOT using social media, and buying Apple products as a contrarian to the the masses use makes you different or superior. It makes you an outlier, is what it does, which isn't a good or bad thing.
But this is a website where the culture is to judge others on what tastes they have so I digress. At the end you're still normal person who uses a ThinkPad instead of a Macbook.
>>
>>56513206
What do you mean with "special"? Being a socially awkward neckbeard spending his days watching anime, browsing /g/, reading books about languages that were popular 30 years ago and tinkering with his gentoo/slackware/arch distro isn't exactly what the average person does these days, its not even what the average CS student would do. Dunno what the /r9k/ fags mean when they say "normie", but I use it to describe people who spend most of their time using snapchat/instagram/facebook/whatsapp and who describe working out, partying and meeting friends as a "hobby".

Consolidation, the ultimate problem with the rise of social media is the resultant homogenization. The internet grew in objective terms but shrunk culturally.

I'm not sure if pic related is entirely accurate, but the basic problem is there.
>>
>>56513396
esports was a thing even back in the 90s. and most who were old enough to participate in said esports/competition then are far older than 18 now. If you don't know this, you also need to be 18 to post here.

>>
>>56513365
An outlier is still a mark on the graph. Sure you're not in the bell curve, but you're still on the graph.

>>56513358
Being an extrovert doesn't make you normal. And being an introverted coder doesn't make you abnormal. Not being normal would be mentally ill behavior like being a cannibal or defecating on a plate and consuming your own fecal matter. Again, you seem to think that partaking in alternative interests makes you different and an outsider. It just makes you someone who doesn't have a mainstream interest, which is completely normal.

>I played Counter Strike since the beta
I remember being at a LAN session not long after Counter Strike Beta 2 came out in 1999.
Back then I could not see it yet but I remember a vague feeling of impending doom, no pun intended. This was it. This will attract the Normies.
Lo and behold, there it was. The slow paced nature of Counter-Strike was accessible enough for Chad to understand. People who never wrote a single line of code were suddenly appearing on LAN parties.
I started to go less and less. It was over.
>>
People figured out how to appeal to the masses and what worked in order to make the most money and exposure for their product or company.

Simple marketing. Look at the format of a classified section of a newspaper; it's like that for a reason. They figured out what works the best.

Unfortunately, computers have been reduced to needing next to no intelligence to use, so any Joe Blow can log onto a site and spew his shit opinion, and subscribe to YouTube channels that create such lasting and valuable content like EPIC THUG PRANK IN THE GHETTO ALMOST TURNS FATAL SEXUAL 2016 LIKE SUBSCRIBE COMMENT FOR MORE

It was only a matter of time.
>>
>>56513037
I like GO. But the one thing I can't stand about it is how you can't spam crouch like you could in 1.6.
>>
>>56513473
That depends on your definition of normal, I don't mean normal in a sense of not being a mentally ill degenerate who isn't able to function, but rather in a sense of how far you're away from the average western person in your lifestyle and personality. For example I do work out and use whatsapp, but my lifestyle and personality in a whole is what I described above, except for the neckbeard part. So I'd say thats what most people mean when they call someone a normie.
>>
>>56513473
Are you fucking retarded or what? If you're an outlier then you don't fit the expected results of the data set, therefore you are ~not~ normal. Fuck me you're stupid. I bet you think the only way someone can be anything but a normalfag is psychosis.

Outlier:
An extreme deviation from the mean.

Anomaly:
1. A person who is unusual.
2. Deviation from the normal or common order or form or rule.

That wasn't so hard.

>>
>>56513206
If you need someone to explain the word normie to you, either you are more than likely normal yourself or you're too new to be familiar with the term's usage here. It's just not "he doesn't go outside", "he's an introvert", "he drinks/does drugs" etc. There's much more to that and the best way to learn is to lurk and find out that way. One starting point is "he is autistic". Of course there are real life autists who go outside and talk to their fellow autistic friends on the bus or whatever, and clearly I'm not saying autistic in this sort of sense, but you'll have to figure out how I'm using the term yourself.

If I had to give you another starting point, it would be "he doesn't follow the ever-changing current/biggest trends with his buddies so they all have something to talk about". It absolutely is possible for someone who isn't a normie to have friends, but there's a good chance their friends don't care about the new biggest TV show or film either. A good friend of mine has slowly turned into a normie over the years because of his new friends. He mostly dropped whatever interests he had before he met them and just follows whatever new show or big video game they latch on to, if only so they have stuff to talk about.
So he's currently watching the new Voltron despite not really having an interest in those sort of shows before, wants me to download that Overwatch free trial for this weekend, bought an iPhone if only because all his friends used them, and even though he said he really wanted to play Splatoon with me, he never did more than likely because none of his other friends cared about it. It's incredibly hard talking to him now because I just don't care about most of the stuff he likes and/or don't have the money to keep up. I'm saying all this because I go to a forum which is filled with normals and they all act exactly like this.

There is much more to it than this though. You need to learn it yourself though.
>>
Ads.

I can't complain about normies because having everybody on the internet gave us so much good amateur porn.

I can't complain about social networks either because that stuff is all confined. I don't like facebook so I'm not on it and I don't really have to deal with it. There are Like buttons everywhere but my adblocker deals with that.

Ads are the real cancer of the internet. They were fine in the 90's when they were simple rectangular banner .gif images. Then they evolved into Flash, Java, Javascript, etc. And now we have the clusterfuck that we have today. Then they have the balls to say "waaah your adblocker hurts our profits", so you turn the adblocker off and your device or PC grinds to a halt because of all the bullshit.

Sites that have unblockable adblock warnings and stop you from reading the content get an instant "nope" from me. Sites that are more practical and have simple ads in the form of animated gifs (or the like) get whitelisted.
>>
>>56514310
Sites like adfly must have been created by Satan himself. They're so fucking annoying.

>>
>>56514262
The fact normalfags invaded doesn't obviously stop anyone from making great things on the internet but it's limiting in a few aspects:

- since they leverage huge numbers of dumb consumers, normalfags get pandered to and money gets diverted for them

- the network gets increasingly policed and controlled by governments because normalfags can't take the trolling/banter/etc and take everything at face value, they don't have the knowledge to identify criminal activity (they easily fall for phishing, malware ads, viruses etc)

This same phenomenon happened with video games and the arrival of the Wii and casual mobile games, suddenly you have shit like GG, feminists going wild, people getting offended left and right, games getting censored, dumbing down of everything.
>>
>>56513834
>Pretty much this, it got adapted for tech illiterate people.

>>
>>56514342

I honestly miss the pack-nigger mentality of raiding webpages and hacking stupid low security shit on the internet. the 90 - early 2000s were the wild west of the web. 4chan was kind of the ESR to this part of the web until 5 or 6 years ago. Right but then the cancer would go back to /b/ it never stayed that long.

The average /b/ raid went like this:
>roll a number for which board we should raid guise
>/g/ got picked
>people who didn't care about Technology would come here and post "how do i hack computers"
>they would screen shot and post on /b/
>after getting little/no replies or they got banned
>they would read the typical (non consumerist) tech enthusiasm on this board. They wouldn't really understand the threads so they would either lurk until they learned (and posted relevant discussion points) or leave back to /b/

now /g/ is:
>the iPhone is gay!
>1500+ replies

you can see how this would attract the non-tech crowd from /b/

We can't stop normies from using it. But we can avoid the eternal september by using communities centered around precise interests that are not friendly to newcomers unless they learn the etiquette.

Basically chans are the current incarnation of BBS/usenet culture and as long as we try our hardest to hold up the lurk moar policy we'll be.

If we fail the good people will go somewhere else and continue the cycle.

Well we are in endless summer after all. All the kids can post at any time thanks to mobile shitware cancer, there is no way back now. You can't integrate that many new people into a culture of a place unless people are really committed to uphold the "netiquette" and spirit of the board and different people have different opinions of what a board should be.

Many newfags think /g/ is just a shitposting board for the new razer gear and smartphones, I arrived here when it was the loli age and people had more technical threads and even some projects of their own (4chanx, appchan as an example).

Things change.

Well originally, "normalfags" were just the people who don't frequent this place, but overtime it's come to mean "mainstream people" as in the kind of people who don't live in the fringes of society, be those of knowledge or of condition.

Robots tend to use it to mean "anyone who isn't as ostracized as me" but it's not a useful definition so i don't acknowledge it.

Pic related is the metric i go by for "not being a normie"

You generalize. I know quite a few millenials, and some are no worse than oldfags were before chanology.
What I want is for this place to remain counter culture, but for that we still need a constant amount of new blood.

But that we got already anyways.

What we need is to deal with it properly and enforce the fucking board culture instead of letting /g/ become only a consumer electronics board.

I mean fuck it's either that or going the way of /tech/ and having to deal with /pol/ in every thread.
So far the only place left where i'm sure to discuss technology is lainchan and that's both slow and circlejerky as fuck.

If you'd stop jerking your fucking wannabe oldfaggot dick you'd actually remember how shitty search engines were and how terrible websites were with literally no information. Who the fuck made you king and can dictate when a niche is too large? we can't have a gaming site according to you, we have to have 30 websites per console, or how finely grained should it be? fuck you.

>commercialization
Corporations are smarter than you and make products you want. You now have a private tailored service where in your case only tech products show up, but you've lied to yourself for a whole decade by now and insisted that this is violating your privacy while you rage at radio and billboard ads. Remember when you had to mail order a thinkpad?

you losers selectively ignore all of the modern things you couldn't live without, you would literally shit your pants without youtube and wikipedia, but at the same time you pretend to be all old and jerk your chain about how you're some shepherd of the internet because you think you showed up first.

No matter how early you showed up there was always someone there before you. You were the normies first who invaded their websites. If it were up to your typical vocal usenet piece of shit, who hasn't had more than a 40 second conversation with someone since the 80s, we'd be relegated to local BBSes only because they can't handle the entire world and want to circlejerk with 3-4 people forever. Okay so you're anti social and still can't make it when you have social media and the entire internet trying to talk to you but you just drone it out with your i-was-here-first BS.

If you aren't making money by now with some sort of online business or service, just fuck off back to your BBS circlejerk, you don't have a clue what the fuck you're talking about.

When it's all boiled down, you're literally just the next generation of luddites and you can never let yourself mentally leave the 00s. Just like you make fun of your grandma who has been fighting windows for 25 years and still can't figure out the start button. You think you're all cool and an oldfag like that means anything but you are just the modern version of your grandma. You roll your eyes when she says "Well back in my day we had typewriters" and fought computers for two decades but now you're sitting in a cafe seeing some "kid" with a smartphone asking you about your flip phone and you'd roll your eyes at EVERYTHING MADE AFTER 2005. This isn't about service X, service Y, you're just the new luddites, this is fear, you can't accept anything outside your shitty little decade because you've failed at everything and just want to stay there forever in a time when you still had potential and you didn't throw it all away for nothing.

Penny to a pound that 10 minutes in your gay little neo 2005 era environment you'd freak out, and you'd forsake your "wild west" all over again if it ever could happen.

By the way, as a "true" wannabe vocal oldfag, you should see your gay little list as containment. They'd have nowhere else to go and would go to 4chan. Of course you want the end result of this to just be that they don't use the internet at all, because you were here first and think you're better than everyone else including the 80s usenet turds saying the same shit towards you.

I think the biggest problem society faces today is a combination of publicized social media where censorship has become the norm and overall tech illiteracy is widespread.

>public social media
I'm fine with things like Kik where people can have civil group chats or easily talk to friends over wifi if they live in a area where cellular service is limited and expensive. You can also talk to people from around the world without paying outrageous international fees. There's also 4chan. That's the good side of social media. Then you have sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc. that are known for bringing out selfishness and degeneracy. It's for this reason I also avoid /b/ and /pol/ like the plague. The internet brings out the worst in people when you allow them to run wild with little or no rules. This is why those people need containment areas, not entire sites.

>censorship
It might sound hypocritical at this point, but I'm also against heavy censorship, especially for the sake of people's feelings. I don't believe in hate speech, only hateful actions. Voicing an opinion is not a crime. That being said, I think that free speech should be allowed as long as it's not doing massive damage, such as inciting a race riot as many on the cancer boards here have tried to do. What I hate even more than that is what Facebook recently did. They asked a journalist to remove or edit the iconic "napalm girl" photo where a young naked girl is running for her life after her village was bombed. There's a huge difference between an important historical photograph and pedos sharing fap material, and SJWs fail to realize this. Censorship of human history, good or bad, makes it more difficult for our children to learn from our mistakes and build on our success. Today it's a photo, tomorrow it's important historical documents. Even some Wikipedia pages aren't safe. The internet is nearly all of mankind's collective knowledge available in seconds. It's worth fighting for.

>tech illiteracy
I don't expect everyone to be able to install Arch on their own or to be able to take apart their PC and put it back together, but I don't think it would be unreasonable for people to learn a thing or two about the devices they use daily. Many people, grown adults, think that phones run on unicorn farts or don't know what a kernel is. These things need to be taught in schools now that the internet and computers are an important part of work and private life. I think that people need to be taught basic troubleshooting techniques like rebooting, googling stuff, and uninstalling/deleting unused programs and files instead of bitching about lack of storage. I really don't think this a lot to ask of people using computers every day. A person asking what USB means is like a toddler asking how a door hinge works. This needs to change.

censorship is why we dont know shit about the past. The winners write the history books. and guess what. they make themselves look like saints and paint the conquered as whatever they feel like. right now history is being censored. We dont get to see what is really happeneing in the middle east. we only see what they want us to. Humans have been destroying history as they make it for millennia this is just the current iteration. People in power have an uncanny ability to give no shits about where we are headed and its in their best interest to keep as much truth from the people as possible.
