Why don't you have a Windows VM for gaming?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

IF you do it the other way around you get the advantage of using linux as a server to your windows vm. It's like a server with a browser. Pretty handy when windows wants to update or if you disable the public network to stop it from updating etc. Only downside that I've run into is file management hassles with permissions etc and that sends me into the linux land of forums and trying to squeeze a bit of information from people who clearly have it but 'want me to understand' and talk all the way around it without just telling how the fuck to do something. There's some queer folk in linux, but the system has its strengths for sure. Windows has its share too. Obnoxious but in a different way.

I'm just wondering one thing since there are a lot of folks here that use passthrough.

Right now, I'm dualbooting windows 10 and arch. Of course I'd like to use arch mainly but my vidya games are on my windows 10 boot.

Would I be able to use my win10 dualboot for the vm, since most of my games are there and I don't have hard drive space?

AMD supports it throughout basically all of their products. The main issue with AMD is making sure the mobo supports it.

Intel is pretty much hit and miss you have to look up what the processor supports on their website.

>VM through Linux that doesn't have the performance penalties of WINE
yes

in oversimplified terms, a virtual machine or a layer like Wine tricks software into thinking it's running on specific hardware. That "faking" requires work from your actual hardware that decreases performance. With a GPU passthrough there is no trick, you give the virtual OS real access to real hardware
>>
>>56512661
Ah I understand now, thanks for the clarification anon.
>>
>>56512550
When you use IOMMU the processor and BIOS/UEFI reserve the hardware for the virtual machine to utilize. The host machine cannot see it or access it under IOMMU, the computer is basically partitioned into two machines.

IOMMU is not limited to graphics cards, I think it technically supports any hardware.

>>
>>56512773
I think it's actually more like the hardware device is "reserved". The host OS might be able to see it but it respects the "reserved" state and does not attempt to utilize it. Either way the host OS doesn't have access to the hardware at least not directly if everything is working properly.

As for the cores/threads, I don't really know how that is handled. I would assume the host OS assigns them to the virtual machine but still takes priority over the guest OS. I'm not sure how hardware based virtualization like VT-x works

Well, shit, just looked at the stuff I had bought.
Turns out I already have support for it across everything.
I was panicking there looking through the Intel processor list, only 2 hits on my processor, the i5-4430. I had the standard one.
http://ark.intel.com/products/75036/Intel-Core-i5-4430-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_20-GHz

Well, I'm assuming the PCI device matters not in the support for it since it is the device being anchored on to a guest OS.

I will get right on that maybe in the weekend.
Just using this by the looks of it:

>>
>>56513651
The general rule for sandy bridge onward is non-k processors in the i5, i7, and Xeon series usually support it. Pentium and i3s I'm not sure but I think they don't tend to.

Yeah that's what I was reading around when googling as well.

Also, I just shit myself so hard there.
I stupidly thought I had an ASRock board, but it wasn't, it was MSI.
They had the exact same prefix, so I assumed it was fine.
Shitting intensified as the wiki for VT-d support never had this board.
Lucky some dude on overclocked messaged them and they got back saying it was supported.

Holy fuck near dying. Me and my stupid assumptions.
Gotta do some updating.
Would have been a pain in the ass having to get a new board when this is already fairly new.
