When will major broadcast networks transition to 4k?
>>
Never. Television is dead and internet is too datacapped for 4k
>>
>>56506292
>television is dead
literally what

i haven't watched TV in like a decade, but i thought i was the only one

is TV in that bad of shape? all networks on decline? all providers?

i know that internet streaming is basically a household thing now but do networks not still make a buck by contracting out all their content to the legal streaming services? i would think that would be an overall profit, since pirates have more cheap options to gravitate to
i mean fuck, netflix is serious value
i don't use netflix myself but it's a lot of content for <10$
>>
>>56506292
No way, there will always be a need to shove free content into everyone's faces. ATSC 3.0 I hear will take until well into 2017 until it's ready for showtime, however it's currently being tested in select city markets.
>>
>>56506351
After getting used to online media, TV is difficult.

>And now, we start our show! Here is Billy, and he is-
>COMMERCIAL!

Screw that.
>>
>>56506386

Nigga a lot of TV stations are still on 480i,
>>
reminder japan is already testing 8k
>>
>>56506444
Nigga I have an antenna plugged into my tv and I watch NBC FOX ABC CBS PBS and the major major networks that have the content you'd actually give a shit about broadcasted in 1080p.
>>
>>56506471

1080i actually.

Though FOX and a few stations are 720p60.

>>56506199
America is far behind, don't expect them to be at the edge of the curve. Korea already has a couple of channels testing some things in native 4k.
>>
>>56506199
Never, they won't even give you 1080p.

1080i is decent.
>>
>>56506513
>paying attention to commercials
>>
>>56506351
>i don't use netflix myself but it's a lot of content for <10$
If you like garbage, sure.
>>
>>56506548
Which has what to do with my post? They won't spare the bandwidth for 1080p, so why would they for 2160p?
>>
>>56506565

cause new standard doesn't allow deinterlacing
>>
>>56506565
They'll split the load between ota and shove the rest through the internet. Content will be broadcasted and targeted ads and other shit will be picked up through your wifi. ATSC 3.0
>>
>>56506464
So? We simply don't need that many pixels. With 4K the screen already needs to be enormous or stupidly close for you to see the difference.
>>
>>56506199

Probably until 2020 if I had to guess.
>>
Okay, so no 4k games, no 4k ota broadcasted content.

So what is the best content currently available in 4k? Why get a 4k tv today?

Only 4k content is Vidya and Pr0n. Though theres some blurays going around.

Only reason to get anything 4k is to use a computer monitor.
>>
>>56506578
Please be true
>>
>>56506614
It's a meme. The display technology has advanced faster than storage, graphics cards, domestic internet speeds or even local transfer speeds (there's still a lot of USB2 around).
>>
When H.265 becomes standard that'll free up some bandwidth for transitioning past 1080i/720p streams even if they don't increase overall data rates. If I had to guess they'd go to 1080p finally, and maybe 2160i.
>>
>>56506593
people like you kill innovation. But you have something to say for almost all new advances

>we don't need it
>there's no point

You really think that resolution technology will halt forever at 4k? You're fucking retarded. Whether it be more pixels or better technology, it won't fucking stop at 4K
>>
>>56506807
>it won't fucking stop at 4K
Sure, I have no doubt we'll continue to develop even more absurd screens and I'm sure they will have niche uses for very large billboards and the like but as a consumer product... Why? If I can't see the difference in image quality, what good is this "innovation"?
>>
likely never because normalfags don't know the difference between 1080p and 1080p upscaled to 4k.

also it would destroy their shitty cable lines. the cunts are already trying to force people to pay extra for shit like netflix streaming and that's only in 1080 or 1440p.
>>
>>56506807
the focus shouldn't be on making screens with resolutions higher than 1/20th of the maximum resolution of the eye. the focus should be on making retinal displays or even implanted displays. i want real life HUDs and AR.
>>
>>56506614
4K movies for people who are crazy about the quality of shit. For example I'm a photographer and can appreciate the added sharpness and dynamic range because I have learned to see compromised quality while working with my own photos.
>>
>>56506807
We don't need more fucking pixels, just like we don't need MOAR GHZ on CPUs anymore.

You hit a wall and you have to look at other things to improve next, resolution isn't one of them.
>>
>>56506785
The 6 MHz channel spacing is going nowhere, so the most that can be done is switching to a denser digital radio modulation scheme and to move to increasingly efficient/aggressive compression.
>>
>>56506292
>datacaps
That's only part of the American freedom
>>
>>56506351
it isn't

>4% drop over the past 5 years
>>
Bitch please, even premium TV services only have a handful of "HD" channels.

It's not coming any time soon.
>>
>>56506627
>Only reason to get anything 4k is to use a computer monitor.

For the time being, this is very true.
>>
>>56506199
When at least half of the TV's out there are 4k.
>>
>>56506199
Do you know how long it took them to fully transition into 1080p? It's going to take 5x that.
