It's a meme. The display technology has advanced faster than storage, graphics cards, domestic internet speeds or even local transfer speeds (there's still a lot of USB2 around).

When H.265 becomes standard that'll free up some bandwidth for transitioning past 1080i/720p streams even if they don't increase overall data rates. If I had to guess they'd go to 1080p finally, and maybe 2160i.
